Since Ukraine’s independence, Poland has tried to support its pro-Western aspirations and the political and economic transformation. In the last time, however, we can observe a cooling of mutual relations, resulting primarily from discrepancies in the understanding of historical policy. Nevertheless, the reasons for this phenomenon may also be found in the events in Ukraine that took place in 2013- 2014 and which were later described as the Revolution of Dignity. The main aim of the article is to provide the answer to the question whether and to what extent the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine affected the mutual relations both in the political and social dimensions.

Imaging the events of the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity (based on the anthology Mystets’kyĭ Barbakan: Trykutnyk 92: Antolohiia)The source of the analysed material is the anthology Mystets’kyĭ Barbakan, only 300 copies of which have been printed. It is a collection of works of literature, journalism, and art from the period of the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity (the so-called Maĭdan) of 2013–2014. We focus on the works of art containing both words and images and we combine approaches from language and cultural studies: the imaging devices used in these selected works have been analyzed using the tools of poetics of literature and media, as well as linguistic methodology. Środki obrazowania wydarzeń rewolucji godności na Ukrainie (na podstawie publikacji Мистецький Барбакан: Трикутник 92: Антологія)Źródłem materiału do badania jest antologia Mystećkyj Barbakan, która ukazała się nakładem zaledwie 300 egz. Jest zbiorem tekstów literackich i publicystycznych, a także dzieł artystycznych z okresu rewolucji godności (tzw. Majdanu) na Ukrainie w latach 2013–2014. Analiza wybranych utworów artystycznych zawierających dwa składniki – słowo i obraz – została dokonana w oparciu o podejście lingwistyczno-kulturoznawcze: sposób obrazowania w wybranych pracach przeanalizowany został za pomocą narzędzi poetyki literatury i mediów, a także metodologii badań językoznawczych.

The paper reports The 3R (Three Ukrainian Revolutions) Symposium: Revolution, War and Their Consequences, which took place in Warsaw (Poland) on March 16-17, 2018. This multilayer event was organised as a part of the project named The 3R (Three Ukrainian Revolutions), initiated in the College of Europe in Natolin (Warsaw) in 2015, to provide the comparative studies over three revolutions witnessed in Ukraine in the last three decades. The 2018 conference gathered current and former politicians, diplomats, practitioners, scientists, journalists and social activists coming from mostly Ukraine and Poland, as well as the other states around the globe.

Treścią publikacji jest próba oceny pierwszego roku prezydentury W. Zełenskiego. Dokonując analizy procesu podejmowania decyzji przez W. Zełenskiego (posiłkując się metodą decyzyjną, instytucjonalno-prawną, systemową oraz indukcją i dedukcją) autor próbował odpowiedzieć, czy jest to działanie służące Ukrainie i jej dalekosiężnym interesom. Określając determinanty wpływające na politykę zagraniczną Ukrainy, autor starał się ukazać, co w dalszej perspektywie czeka kraj nad Dnieprem.

The paper sets out to assess the first year of Volodymyr Zelensky’s presidency. By analyzing the decision-making process followed by Zelensky (using the decision-making, institutional-legal, systems, induction and deduction methods), the author attempts to answer whether the process serves Ukraine and its long-term interests. By identifying the determinants affecting Ukraine’s foreign policy, the author tries to show the long term prospects for the country.

Celem artykułu jest poznanie kontekstu kulturowego konfliktu na wschodzie Ukrainy. Z tej perspektywy konflikt w Donbasie należy rozpatrywać nie tylko w kontekście gry politycznej, transformacji społeczno ekonomicznej i interesów geopolitycznych, ale także w świetle zakorzenionego w historii konfliktu kulturowego. Według ukraińskiego badacza, Mykoły Riabczuka, Ukraina jest podzielona nie tyle na etnicznych Rosjan i Ukraińców, ile pomiędzy dwa różne typy ukraińskiej tożsamości. Różnice te zaostrzyły się wraz z wydarzeniami „Euromajdanu”, a następnie w wyniku konfliktu zbrojnego pomiędzy separatystami z Donieckiej i Ługańskiej Republiki Ludowej a nowym rządem Ukrainy. Artykuł koncentruje się na tym, w jaki sposób podziały kulturowe ukraińskiego społeczeństwa od początku ukraińskiej niepodległości są wykorzystywane przez elitę polityczną jako narzędzie polityki symbolicznej, co pod koniec 2013 roku doprowadziło do masowej mobilizacji ukraińskiego społeczeństwa i wybuchu konfliktu zbrojnego.

The aim of the paper is to explore the cultural context of the conflict in eastern Ukraine. From this perspective, the conflict in Donbas has to be seen not only in the context of a political game, socio-economic transition and geopolitical interests, but also in the light of a cultural conflict rooted in history. According to Ukrainian researcher Mykola Riabchuk, Ukraine is divided, not between ethnic Russians and Ukrainians, but between two different types of Ukrainian identity. These profound differences have been exacerbated by the events of the “Euromaidan” and, subsequently, the violent conflict between the separatist forces of the self-declared Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics on the one hand and the post revolutionary Ukrainian government on the other. This article focuses on how the cultural divisions of Ukrainian society have been used since the beginning of Ukrainian independence by the political elite as a tool of symbolic politics, contributing to the mass mobilization of Ukrainian society and the outbreak of a violent conflict.

The Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity was a space of extraordinary visual creativity, the analysis of which allows us to better understand its essence, as well as its social and political background. The article proposes the use of postcolonial theories, mainly based on the ideas of Frantz Fanon, Leela Gandhi and Homi Bhabha, as a tool for a better understanding of the visual sphere of the Maidan revolution. Ukraińska Rewolucja Godności była przestrzenią niezwykłej kreatywności wizualnej, której analiza pozwala lepiej zrozumieć jej istotę, jak również jej podłoże społeczne i polityczne. Artykuł proponuje użycie teorii postkolonialnych, opartych głównie na myśli Frantza Fanona, Leeli Gandhi i Homiego Bhabhy, jako narzędzia służącego lepszemu zrozumieniu sfery wizualnej rewolucji na Majdanie. Oparta jest ona na dualizmie pomiędzy charakterem antykolonialnym i nacjonalistycznym, oraz postkolonialnym, hybrydowym, bazujący na potencjale społeczeństwa obywatelskiego i nowej podmiotowości.
