This paper aims: 1. To discuss Romano Guardini’s method of philosophical and religious studies and its achievements, i.e. presenting the Christian eidos as finding its fullest expression in Jesus as our Lord. 2. To compare Guardini’s method with medieval philosophy as taught by Thomas Aquinas and others. Citing G. van Rieta, the paper attempts to show that Thomism should be continued today, drawing on contemporary philosophy, the phenomenological method in particular. This is a reliable way to see what Christianity is in itself, in its specific religious character.

The article presents the issue of the relationship between body and soul in a person in Romano Guardiniʼs anthropological philosophy. The psychosomatic unity is for him the foundation for all human reflections. The aim was to present the main concepts of the relationship between body and soul throughout history with particular emphasis on those to which he is opposed. The article presents personalistic concept concerning the dialogic nature of the person and its importance to the liturgy. This article is an attempt at comprehensive approach to the concept of the human unity of body and soul in Romano Guardiniʼs philosophy.

For Joseph Ratzinger, Romano Guardini was a valued lecturer and an author of inspiring books. Ratzinger finds attractive Guardini’s ardent quest for truth, the courage to ask big and important questions, boldness to confront the Christian faith with the challenges of contemporary culture, the conviction of the significant cognitive possibilities of human reason, and the emphasis on the primacy of truth in theology. Both authors point to the reasonableness of the Christian faith, based ultimately on the fact that God Himself is Truth. Faith and reason are not mutually exclusive, but they can support each other through solid cognition. Of course, human reason, when trying to know God, struggles with its own limitations in the face of the mystery which exceeds the capacities of the creation.

Catholic liturgy can be analyzed by referring to the concept of game. Johan Huizinga, creating the homo ludens concept, devoted much of his research to the analysis of sacred activities as a game. Reflection on the liturgy as a game allows for a better understanding of contemporary changes taking place in the catholic ritual. The above text begins with the discussion of the issue of the game by Johan Huizinga. Then, based on the works of Romano Guardini and Joseph Ratzinger, the liturgy is described as a game. The text ends with a reference to contemporary problems of the catholic ritual in relation to the Huizinga’s theory.

W ramach trwającej wiele wieków refleksji antropologicznej nad charakterem istnienia człowieka w kulturze doszło do przypisania mu serii immanentnych cech. W wyniku tego powstał np. homo faber czy homo religiosus. Punktem wyjścia tego tekstu jest ujęcie człowieka jako homo ludens („człowiek bawiący się”), którego autorem jest holenderski orientalista, historyk i teoretyk kultury Johan Huizinga. Myśląc o „człowieku bawiącym się”, można wskazać wiele zabaw obecnych w kulturze na przestrzeni wieków i pominąć jednocześnie temat kultu. Huizinga pracując przez lata nad koncepcją homo ludens, sporą jej część poświęca sakralnemu wymiarowi zabawy, co jest niewątpliwie jego sporą zasługą w kulturoznawczej refleksji nad rytuałem. Zagadnieniu zabawy w kulturze zostanie poświęcony początek tekstu. Następnie, w oparciu o dzieła Huizingi oraz niemiecko-włoskiego uczonego Romano Guardiniego i Josepha Ratzingera – Benedykta XVI, zostanie przedstawione przełożenie teorii zabawy na przestrzeń liturgii. Tekst zwieńczy omówienie współczesnych przemian rytuału katolickiego w kontekście zagadnienia liturgii jako gry.

The present study initiates an in-depth reflection, a planned series of articles or a proper book concerning the position of liturgy in theology. It would be inappropriate to start such a subject from theology other than the German one, which had its origin in the liturgical movement. The homeland of the liturgical movement was, undoubtedly, France and later on Belgium. However, in none of the language areas it had such an intellectual foundation as in Germany and Austria. From the very outset the study of liturgy developed here into three directions, but the first two of them usually occurred alongside. The first approach is called the theological and historical study of liturgy, the second one is theological and systematic study of liturgy. The third approach consisted in pastoral liturgics. After the analysis of theoretical assumptions of the mutual link between theology and liturgy and the presentation of the teaching of the Second Vatican Council concerning the focal position of the study of liturgy in theology, there were presented the origins and main objectives of an independent theological discipline (Liturgiewissenschaft) emerging in the German language area and focused on liturgy. Two main trends of the developing discipline were displayed. The first of them is the systematic study of liturgy, created by Odo Casel OSB, and Romano Guardini. The second trend, which stems from the significance of liturgy for the Christian life, is theological and pastoral study of liturgy (Pastoralliturgik). Athanasius Wintersig OSB (1900-1942) is considered to be the creator of this approach.

Niniejszy artykuł rozpoczyna chronologiczne przedstawienie dwóch głównych tradycji rozumienia serca: tradycji analitycznej, która traktuje serce jako szczególną zdolność osoby ludzkiej, oraz tradycji syntetycznej, która uznaje, że serce tę szczególną zdolność przekracza. W kolejnych częściach artykułu autor dokonuje przeglądu współczesnych badań teologicznej antropologii serca oraz analizuje teologiczną antropologię serca Josepha Ratzingera, zaprezentowaną w jego komentarzu do Gaudium et spes, w jego ocenie patrystycznego rozumienia serca oraz w jego książkach Jezus z Nazaretu i Matka Boga. Maryja w wierze Kościoła. Następnie autor bada Ratzingerowską symboliczną teologię serca Boga Ojca oraz sposób, w jaki zarówno ludzkie serce, jak i serce Ojca objawiają się w sercu Jezusa. Artykuł kończą refleksje na temat sposobu, w jaki syntetyczna teologiczna antropologia serca może pomóc w uzdrowieniu współczesnej antropologicznej dezintegracji.

This article begins with a chronological outline of the two main “traditions” of understanding the heart: the “analytic” tradition which treats the heart as a particular faculty of the human person, and the “synthetic” tradition which treats it as in some way transcending a particular faculty. Then, it looks at the contemporary search for a theological anthropology of the heart. Following this, it examines Joseph Ratzinger’s theological anthropology of the heart. More specifically, it looks at this understanding as found in his commentary on Gaudium et Spes, his assessment of the patristic understanding of the heart, and as revealed in his Jesus of Nazareth and Mary: The Church at the Source. Then, it investigates his symbolic theology of the Father’s heart, followed by how both the human heart and the Father’s heart are revealed in the heart of Jesus. It concludes with a few thoughts on how a synthetic theological anthropology of the heart might assist us in healing our contemporary anthropological disintegration.
