The Romany language, due to the circumstances in which it is used, frequently borrows lexical items. This mostly happens from the local language, that is, the one spoken by the majority society surrounding the given Roma community. The verbal system seems to be of particular interest, as well as the phenomena and the ongoing processes in the verbal paradigms in relation to the adaptation of loan verbs. One of the most important elements of loan-verb adaptation in Hungarian Lovari is the derivational marker -sar, as opposed to Austrian Lovari, where the dominant marker used for the same function is in. Te marker -sar can be viewed as one single unit, but it is possible to break it down into two parts, namely -(V)s- and -ar, on a historical basis – both possibilities can be justified. Therefore the question arises as to which is worth more, but as we will see, the changes that have happened and are happening in the language may make the strictly diachronic approach unnecessarily complicated, whereas, at the same time, it can be difficult to handle them within a traditional synchronic framework. However, if we look at the analogy-based processes which have taken place and are taking place, the change can easily be made part of the model and the question loses its significance.

The contribution (output of the VEGA project 1/0170/11) can be divided thematically to three parts. The first part focuses on the basic terminological definitions; the second part analyses the studied environment and evaluates the information using the so-called grounded theory; and the final part summarises and presents the results in the content of social work. Our objective was to produce a piece of work that would provide the experts in this field with an alternative way consisting of specific definitions of the concepts and a different, so far not very often used methodological approach. The contribution can be also used by students of helping professions, especially Social Services and Counselling, or Social Work, as an additional study material for outreach social work, community work or as a sample of using the qualitative method. In the contribution we used the combination of the scientific and fictional styles, which might be suitable also for lay people. The statements are based on the verbatim, highlighted utterances of the informants.

Artykuł przygotowany w ramach projektu VEGA 1/0170/11 obejmuje trzy części. Pierwsza z nich dotyczy podstawowych definicji terminologicznych, druga – jest obszarem analizy badanego środowiska – mniejszości romskiej w kontekście tzw. teorii ugruntowanej; natomiast końcowa część, będąca podsumowaniem – prezentuje wyniki badań i zalecenia do praktyki edukacyjnej w zakresie pracy socjalnej.
