This article is a commemorative description of the Institute of Slavonic Philology at the Catholic University of Lublin, on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, a description far from complete and one that is simplified and very subjective, but one given by a person who had the honour to participate in the creation and history of this institute which was organised entirely by Professor Ryszard Łużny according to his personal concepts of teaching and research, and who had the opportunity to help launch the faculty. Currently-after the previous evolution of this centre of didactics and academia-there has been somewhat of an involution, or rather changes to its organisation and programme of studies. The School of Applied Linguistics, created in the 2017/2018 academic year, is a completely different, autonomous didactic entity, which is to be wished every success with this opening up of a new chapter in the history of teaching and research.

Utworzona w roku akademickim 2017/ 2018 „Lingwistyka stosowana” to zupełnie inny, autonomiczny byt dydaktyczny, któremu należy życzyć pomyślnego rozwoju i otwarcia nowej pozytywnej karty w historii dydaktyki i badań naukowych. Autorka zwraca uwagę na kilka istotnych znakowych kwestii w opisie 30-letniej historii Instytutu Filologii Słowiańskiej oraz na główne kierunki uprawianych w nim badań.

This article deals with the problems researched by Professor Ryszard Łużny in the field of Biblical studies. R. Łużny was the first Polish expert in Russian studies - or in fact in Slavic studies - to initiate literary reflection upon the Bible in the mid-1970s. When Łużny began his research, Poland was going through serious reforms, changes and substantial revisions of the political system. The author of this article focuses on depicting contexts which contributed to R. Łużny's literary Biblical studies. This latter activity translated onto a variety of his actions: his publications and his organization of scientific conferences. All these concentrated on the relation between literature and the Bible, beginning with reflection on the Russian verbal, folklore literature and ending with his studies on the Russian literature of the 20th century. The article also shed light on R. Łużny's works on Ukrainian and Belarusan literatures between the 16th and the 18th century in the context of their relation to the Bible. The basic exponents of how Łużny understood literary Biblical studies are presented. These included: (1) The Bible as an archetype of literary art, (2) the Bible as a model for poetics, (3) the Bible as a model for Christian ethics .

This paper attempts to investigate the current relevance and significance of the work published by Prof. Ryszard Łużny in 1966, entitled Writers in the Kiyv-Mohyla Academy circle and their influence on Polish literature. This seminal work became an epistemological and axiological foundation for the author's own research, but also for his numerous students and followers, engaged in the investigations of the Polish-East-Slavic relations in the domains of culture and religion. Łużny's work is an example of an objective and ideologically unbiased, humanistic approach of a philologist and researcher of cultures to facts and to the ontological, axiological and historical truth they correspond with. Rejecting the theory of the paramount role of Polish culture in shaping the creative personalities of the writers – students of Kiyv-Mohyla Academy – R. Łużny proved that they were a first point of contact between the East-Slavic culture, mostly Russian, Poland and the West.

By virtue of his education, his career as a lecture and his research interests, Ryszard Łużny was an expert in East Slavic and Polish literature. In his writings, he exhibited profound knowledge of Polish literature, beginning with Old Polish up to contemporary works. He was first to demonstrate the existence of such phenomena as common features of intellectual currents in Slavic writings and in West European trends, which are often considered distinct by specialists in the field. A significant portion of his research focused on intertextuality. He was able to make apt diagnoses of the cultural phenomena in contemporaneity and in the past.

This article discusses the works of the renowned Polish scholar Ryszard Łużny devoted to the 19th-century Russian poetry. These are predominantly his reflections on the works by A. Pushkin and F. Tiutchev. Having analysed the ideas expressed by Łużny, the author of this article concludes that they are still relevant and topical. They can be of much use to contemporary researchers and students of Russian studies, since they provide outstanding research models thanks to their epistemological and methodological solutions.

This article deals with Professor Ryszard Łużny's interests and research in Ukrainian studies. This Polish Slavist contributed hugely to the development of the Ukrainian studies on Baroque, particularly on the Polish-language Baroque poetry composed in Ukraine; also on the links between the Ukrainian Baroque with Western culture, including the Polish one. Professor Łużny's research was not recognized in the Soviet Ukraine, since the researcher kept a keen interest in the religious aspects of the Baroque literature. At present, Łużny's research is winning wide recognition among Ukrainian researchers.

Professor Łużny's autobiographic work and memories about him are the departure point for the article. The interviewed students, collaborators and friends of Professor Łużny paint a clear picture of an outstanding scholar, great event organizer and, first and foremost, of a great man. The article ends with a list of publications in memoriam Professor Łużny and the list of conferences organized by his students between 1997 and 2013 in Kraków and Lublin.
