The Jews for several hundred years lived in the Polish lands, from the 16th century on the areas of the present Biała Podlaska County and formed a significant part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth society. They had own customs, traditions, language and religion and settled primarily small towns and market settlements. To high degree they influenced the socio-economic development of the Lublin region, including Sławatycze – small town on the Bug River.

Żydzi, którzy na przestrzeni kilkuset lat zamieszkiwali ziemie polskie, w tym od XVI w. także tereny obecnego powiatu bialskiego, stanowili istotną część społeczeństwa Rzeczypospolitej. Charakteryzowali się własnymi zwyczajami, tradycjami, językiem i religią. Zamieszkiwali przede wszystkim małe miasteczka i osady targowe. W znacznym stopniu wpływali na rozwój społeczno-gospodarczy różnych miejscowości na terenie Lubelszczyzny, w tym położonych nad Bugiem Sławatycz.

Mały słownik języka chachłackiego Edy Ostrowskiej to artykuł, który rękopiśmienne materiały przekazane przez autorkę Bibliotece Uniwersyteckiej Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego prezentuje w formie uporządkowanej wraz z komentarzem językoznawczym. Najliczniejszą grupę w słowniku stanowią rzeczowniki, a wśród nich określenia osób, nazwy potraw, ubrań, części ciała, roślin i zwierząt. Kolejny znaczny zbiór przedstawiają czasowniki, inne części mowy, znacznie mniej jest zwrotów, powiedzeń, przekleństw i specyficznych zdań zasłyszanych. Zaprezentowany materiał zebrany przez niespecjalistę, wybierany subiektywnie charakteryzuje duży ładunek emocjonalny. Z zebranego materiału wyłania się specyficzny dla obszaru pogranicza językowy obraz świata.

Eda Ostrowska’s little dictionary of the Khakhlak language is an article that presents the manuscripts donated to the Library of the Catholic University of Lublin by the author, in an arranged form along with a linguistic commentary. The most numerous group in the dictionary is constituted by nouns, and among them – terms denoting people, names of dishes, of clothes, parts of the body, plants and animals. Another considerably big group is made up by verbs and other parts of speech; there are much fewer phrases, sayings, curses and peculiar sentences heard in the language. The presented material, gathered by a person who was not a specialist and selected the material in a subjective way is characterized by a great emotional charge. The collected material shows a linguistic picture of the world characteristic of the borderland.
