Small and medium enterprises (SME) play an important role in the socio-economic development of Europe, and for this reason the European Union conducts an active policy of supporting their growth. In the years 2007-2013 SME will have access to many EU Programmes, Structural Funds and Initiatives which will help remove barriers obstructing their growth and will enhance their competitiveness and innovativeness. Additionally, those instruments will vitally contribute to exceeding the borders of contemporary knowledge, socio-economic development, cooperation, etc.

Our knowledge about the scope and scale of SMEs participation in global economic flows is rather small. Few studies of the issue show limited export potential of the sector and concentrate on numerous barriers faced by smaller firms on the world market. Does the low share of SMEs in exports mean that internationalisation of the sector is very limited? Disintegration of business activities that can be observed now covers almost all spheres of economic activity - from R&D to distribution and from manufacturing to office services. The cases shown in the paper confirm that today's business environment is more conductive to expansion of SMEs cooperating with larger companies than ever before. More, it seems that current changes in business organisation might be of great importance for SMEs internationalisation. So, positive patterns of SMEs cooperation with large internationalized companies give us an idea about the exact ways in which smaller companies can participate in global trade. It is argued in the paper that traditional understanding of foreign trade has restricted value for the analysis of SMEs presence in the global market because it provides underestimated share of SMEs' in worldwide trade. It seems that to cover the role of all firms which products are sold abroad - no matter of the character of their contribution - extended approach to the studies of international trade should be applied. In this approach both passive and active participation, direct and indirect ones should be taken into account to get entire image of the SMEs role in global market.

An investment decision should be based on properly carried out economic calculations. Calculation of the effectiveness of a given investment project includes several steps. The most important of them include preparation of data and assessing the cost-effectiveness of the investment, analysing the level of risk related to its realization, as well as making an investment decision on this basis. This paper presents the results of research into the application of methods for evaluating investment projects by entrepreneurs. The research included non-discounting (PB, ARR, BEP) and discounting decision tools (NPV, IRR, DPB), as well as methods for assessing risk exposure (scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, simulations). Discounting methods for examining investment effectiveness were verified using specific numerical data (a case study).

Various research studies have already reported many benefits of cluster cooperation for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), but the factors´ assessment leading them to be joined in this form of business are still missing. This research contributes to fill this gap by a broader analysis accomplishment within three perspectives: the SMEs’ size category, the cluster cooperation experience and the typology being related to Slovak clusters. The main aim of this study is to identify the most important reasons that drive SMEs to engagement into cluster cooperation and by means of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to group them into main factors affecting the SMEs’ decision about clustering. These outcomes are based on questionnaire survey results conducted among 1018 Slovak SMEs. We evaluated the SMEs’ perception of ten identified reasons by using the Chi-square independence test and Cramer’s V. The EFA results indicated two main factors. The results highlighted the importance of clustering to SMEs, policy makers and other stakeholders.

Alongside the accepted wisdom that the Korean economic miracle has been created by the chaebuls, the careful analysis of the evolution of small and medium firms in Korea demonstrates the important role of smaller businesses all the way through the course of dynamic growth. The size structure of the Korean economy has been strictly controlled by the state and the development of SME have not occurred 'by chance'. SME functions have been evolving through the last half a century according to the economic targets set by national development strategies. As a result of intensive policy intervention the complex organism made out of numerous economic units of different size and profile has been created and every element of the system has its own responsibility to carry out.

Background: Six Sigma is related to product's characteristics and parameters of actions, needed to obtain these products. On the other hand, it is a multi-step, cyclic process aimed at the improvements leading to global standard, closed to the perfection. There is a growing interest in Six Sigma methodology among smaller organizations but there are still too little publications presented such events in the sector of small and medium enterprises, especially based on good empirical results. It was already noticed at the phase of the preliminary researches, that only small part of companies from this sector in Pomerian region use elements of this methodology. Methods: The companies were divided into groups by the type of their activities as well as the employment size. The questionnaires were sent to 150 randomly selected organizations in two steps and were addressed to senior managers. The questionnaire contained the questions about basic information about a company, the level of the knowledge and the practical application of Six Sigma methodology, opinions about improvements of processes occurring in the company, opinions about trainings in Six Sigma methodology. Results: The following hypotheses were proposed, statistically verified and received the answer: The lack of the adequate knowledge of Six Sigma methodology in SMEs limits the possibility to effectively monitor and improve processes - accepted. The use of statistical tools of Six Sigma methodology requires the broad action to popularize this knowledge among national SMEs - accepted. The level of the awareness of the importance as well as practical use of Six Sigma methodology in manufacturing SMEs is higher than in SMEs providing services - rejected, the level is equal. The level of the knowledge and the use of Six Sigma methodology in medium manufacturing companies is significantly higher than in small manufacturing companies - accepted. The level of the knowledge and the application of elements of Six Sigma methodology in SMEs is positively appreciable by these companies, which implemented the QMS -accepted. SMEs prefer to improve already existing processes rather than radically to redesign them in order to reduce the inconstancy - accepted. Conclusions: The level of the knowledge of tools and techniques of Six Sigma methodology in SMEs in Pomeranian region is low and requires a broad popularization action. The level of the awareness of the significance as well as the practice of the use of Six Sigma methodology in manufacturing companies is not significantly different from that one in companies providing services, but it is higher in medium ones in comparison to smaller ones. The introduction of QMS has also a positive influence on this level. The companies of this sector prefer to improve processes rather than to redesign them.

The basic objective of the research was to map the employment forms made use of in the small and medium enterprises operating in the Nitra region, with an emphasis on so called atypical employment forms which provides new possibilities for small and medium-sized enterprises; they introduce the possibility to reduce social contribution costs. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 513 randomly selected and addressed SMEs and 320 fully completed questionnaire forms served as the basis for a data analysis. The data collection was carried out in the first half of the year 2017. The atypical employment forms are applied not only in enterprises operating in the agricultural sector but also in other economy sectors. Micro enterprises use atypical employment patterns mainly when it comes to their active workforce, which fact is not surprising when considering the general characteristics of the enterprises included in this group.
