The sociological approach to social imagination is concerned with both a theoretical revival and with specific applications (political mythology, everyday rumour, the image of the other, etc.). It is lodged in the traditions of the humanities, especially in the works of the founders of this approach, who accorded special attention to collective representations, rites, and symbolic systems. The authors of the article show how the problem of the imagination is situated at the point where the issues of the social converge and that it enables a unique perception of micro-social aspects and serious trends in human history. An examination is therefore made of the methodological and epistemological aspects that render the imaginary a constructible object for sociology.

The paper offers an insight into student scientific conferences as seen from the angle of sociological imagination - a term coined by C. W. Mills. By using the elements of sociological imagination identified by Mills, the article makes an attempt to answer three questions: What is the degree of subjective acting and managing one's own doings among students involved in student scientific conferences? Do the participants of such conferences acknowledge and use the legacy of the past, and if so, to what extent? Does taking part in the conference favor cognitive diversification? Eighty seven responses of students partaking in a student scientific conference were subjected to quantitative analysis. The results made it possible to casually outline the image of educational relations realized during one of the forms of stimulating the students. Analyses reveal that while preparing and running the conferences students take subjective actions - become 'doers' in their search for tradition and the present. They are also able to see better the continuity and change of social and individual reality - in other words, they use sociological imagination. Its elements determine the creation and transfer of culture between a lecturer and a student, and the constituents of 'what people - do, think and own - as members of society'.

OD IRONICZNEJ NIEOBECNOŚCI DO WYOBRAŹNI SPOŁECZNEJ. ‘PLAC EUROPEJSKIEJ OBIETNICY’ W BOCHUM – JOCHEN GERZ Od 1973 do 1975 roku Jochen Gerz odwołuje się do zakazu Dekalogu dotyczącego idolatrii w celu wytworzenia stanu subtelnego rozczarowania co do roli obrazu. Ten charakterystyczny „pustostan” pojawia się w wielu jego utworach, zwłaszcza w projektach „kontr-pomnikowych”, w których publiczność sama posługuje się wyobraźnią niezbędną do wizualizacji, które mają być zapamiętane. W jego projekcie – w którym z centralnego miejsca w Saarbrücken wyjmowano płyty brukowe, na których były nazwy cmentarzy żydowskich w Niemczech do 1933 roku – ta „ironiczna nieobecność” przypomina o pierwszym w judeochrześcijańskiej tradycji „przechwytywania obrazu”, które wspomina film Lanzmana pt. Shoah. Konferencja zajmuje się niektórymi aspektami odbudowy pamięci w pracach Jochena Gerza. Marion Hohlfeldt jest starszym wykładowcą historii sztuki na Uniwersytecie Rennes 2. Zajmuje się historią sztuki i przestrzeni publicznej w ciągu ostatnich piętnastu lat. Jest szefem programu badawczego zatytułowanego PAKT (Pratiques Artistiques, Contextes et Territoires, Denis Briand) oraz MAPS (Mistrzowie Sztuki i Przestrzeni Publicznej – w trakcie tworzenia). Była dyrektorem naukowym międzynarodowej konferencji zatytułowanej Faire la Cité. Création et Gouvernance des imaginaires Urbain (2016), a także brała udział w programie europejskim zatytułowanym Wyprawy, 2013–2014. Opublikowała kilka artykułów na temat komunikacji oraz książki na temat sztuki w sferze publicznej, autorstwa i udziału społeczeństwa, także Jochen Gerz. Res Publica – Prace publiczne 1968–1999, 1999, (z Andreasem Hapkemeyer), Parasite (s) – Une stratégie de creation, 2010, (z Pascale Borrel) i Mouvement, Lumière i Le GRAV 1960–1968, 2013 (z Laurence Imbernon). Przygotowuje obecnie pierwszą monograficzną książkę o twórczości Jochena Gerza.
