Historia rozwoju różnych społeczeństw zawiera w sobie elementy zarówno barwne, jak i zatrważające, będące efektem współdzielonych obaw, niepewności czy też próby znalezienia wytłumaczenia dla zjawisk, które nie mogły być wyjaśnione przy pomocy ówczesnego poziomu wiedzy i nauki. Jednym z nich są (rzekome) czary oraz pozostałe praktyki magiczne pojawiające się zarówno w wierzeniach ludowych, jak i w głównym nurcie kultury popularnej (dotyczy to zwłaszcza wydarzeń mających miejsce na przestrzeni wieków szesnastego i siedemnastego w Europie i Ameryce Północnej). Celem przedstawionego artykułu jest odniesienie się do problemu czarów i czarownic/czarowników w jego aspektach kulturowym i prawnym. Dopiero takie podejście jest w stanie odpowiednio oddać złożoność tego wielowiekowego wątku, a tym samym pozwala w kompleksowy sposób przeanalizować jego funkcjonowanie i pochodzenie. Poprzez analizę społeczną uwarunkowań kulturowych cechujących społeczeństwo amerykańskie XVI i XVII stulecia, w tym elementów wierzeń religijnych, dominującego światopoglądu oraz praktyk społecznych, tekst podejmuje próbę przybliżenia i zrozumienia podstaw zachowań prowadzących w danej społeczności do wyalienowania i pozbawienia życia tych, którzy byli podejrzewani o konszachty z siłami nieczystymi i skazywani w imię zaspokojenia określonych potrzeb wspólnoty: bezpieczeństwa, ładu publicznego czy też dostosowania do panującego systemu społecznego i obowiązujących zasad religijno-prawnych. Biorąc pod uwagę również fakt, iż w wielu krajach aparat ścigania i osądzania czarownic/czarowników przybierał formę zinstytucjonalizowaną, zasadne staje się także odniesienie się do samego mechanizmu procedowania na terenie obecnych Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki relacjonujących rozpatrywane przez sądy przypadki oraz opisujących mechanizmy walki z osobami oddającymi się nielegalnym i nieakceptowanym praktykom.

The history of development of various societies and communities contains elements which are both colorful and disquieting, being the result of shared concerns, uncertainty or an attempt at providing an explanation for phenomena which could not be clarified by means of the then level of knowledge or science. One of the phenomena concerned the (alleged) magic and other co-related practices which appeared in folk beliefs as well as in the mainstream of popular culture (this shall concern especially the events occurring in the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe and North America). The objective of this article is to scrutinize the problem of magic in its cultural and legal aspect. By a social analysis of cultural circumstances characterizing the American population of that period, it becomes possible to describe and understand the foundations of behaviors and acts leading in a given community to alienation and death of those suspected of collusions with unclean spirits and sentenced in the name of preserving public security and order or adjusting to the existing social system and binding religious and legal principles. Taking into consideration the fact that in many countries the apparatus of hunting and judging witches and wizards had an institutionalized form, it becomes justifiable to refer to various texts of culture produced on the territory of the United States of America reporting on the cases examined by courts and describing the mechanisms of fighting with individuals devoting to illegal and unacceptable practices.

The review is a look at the book Z romantycznych rodowodów biblijnych. Apostoł Paweł w twórczości Cypriana Norwida (From the Romantic Biblical Origins. St Paul the Apostle in Cyprian Norwid's Work) as an inter-disciplinary publication showing the author's great competence in all the problems he tackles, with theology and study of literature at the head. In the background the question appears about the method accepted by Piotr Marchewka, which may seem complicated to an average reader, but his style of shaping the text (the “case” one) is clear and harmonious enough to make the seemingly formal text a nice reading. Numerous references, digressions and penetrating analyses of Dwa męczeństwa (Two martyrdoms) and Salem consistently lead to the finale that is a convincing suggestion of an explanation of Norwid's fascination with the figure of St Paul.
