W 1945 roku rozpoczął się, w trudnych uwarunkowaniach, proces budowania polskiego regionu na Pomorzu Zachodnim. Doniosłą rolę odegrała w tym zakresie oświata. Na wschodnich obszarach regionu już wiosną tego roku, staraniem mieszkających tam jeszcze przed wojną Polaków, organizowano polskie szkoły. W zachodniej części okręgu, w tym w Szczecinie, pierwszy polski rok szkolny organizowały władze państwowe, a głównie kuratorium zachodniopomorskiej oświaty, którym kierował przez kilka miesięcy znany humanista, literat dr Stanisław Helsztyński. Jego następcą we wrześniu 1945 roku został Józef Kania. Pierwsze polskie placówki oświatowe działały w oparciu o założenia programowe funkcjonujące w II Rzeczypospolitej. W Szczecinie pierwszy polski rok szkolny zainaugurowano 4 września 1945. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje uwarunkowania historyczne, polityczne, społeczne towarzyszące budowie polskiego szkolnictwa na Pomorzu Zachodnim.

In 1945, under harsh conditions, began the process of building the Polish region in Western Pomerania. In this field education played an important role. Thanks to the efforts of the Poles living there before the war, polish schools were organized in the eastern parts of the region already in the spring of this year. In the western part of the district, including Szczecin, the first Polish school year was organized by the state authorities, mainly The Education Office of Western Pomeranian, which was, for several months, headed by a well-known humanist, writer Dr. Stanisław Helsztyński. In September 1945 his successor became Józef Kania. The first Polish educational institutions operated on the basis of program assumptions functioning in The Second Polish Republic. In Szczecin, the first Polish school year was inaugurated on September 4, 1945. This article presents historical, political and social conditions accompanying the building of Polish education in Western Pomerania.
