In this article the authors consider an important instrument of textual criticism – namely, variant reading, the comparison of individual versions of a text. The authors compare the means of recording variant readings, based on lemmata and synopsis. In a brief historical overview they explain why in the Czech Republic the lemmatized forms are the most widespread, even though other kinds were also used to some extent. The authors point out its advantages and shortcomings, the latter of which they see mainly in its failure to record all the necessary information. They consider the synoptic kind to be more suitable for literary scholars because it can record practically all the variants of a text.

This short note contains two textual conjectures to Quintilianus, Declamationes minores, and four conjectures to Terentius Scaurus, De orthographia. In one case (Quintilianus, Declamationes minores, 252, 12) the lectio tradita is defended according to a rare use of velle.

Theocritus' 22th idyll is a hymn to the Dioscuri, in which the stories about Castor and Lynceus are embedded. A dialogue follows the boxing match between Polydeuces and Amycus, but in the other story, the speech of Lynceus is followed by the silence of Castor and it cannot prevent the use of force and cruelty. The rhetorical analysis of Lynceus' speech can be considered as a further proof of the unity of the poem.

This contribution presents the planned critical hybrid edition of the works of Frantisek Gellner (1881-1914) and Karel Hlavacek (1874-1898), which is currently being prepared by the Publications Department of the Institute of Czech Literature, Prague. This is a reader's edition of a critically verified text (without extensive commentary or bibliographical information) published as a paper book as well as a DVD, hence the word 'hybrid' in the title of the edition. The second part of the article explains the approaches used in the editing of the manuscripts and the recording of variant readings.

Textual and literary criticism is an important step in the process of Bible translation. It facilitates the choice of the more original text and helps to understand the differences in textual variants. This article is, by and large, an exercise in textual criticism, with a particular focus on the story of David and Goliath in 1 Sam 17.

The article deals with Jozef Karol Viktorin’s (1822 – 1874) input into editorial practice regarding the ways of (re)publishing older Slovak literary works. As an editor, J. Viktorin advocated for a critical approach to textual sources, researched the history of the text, collected bibliographical data of variants, applied the procedures of variant collation and explication of obscure places, and used the results of these operations to varying degrees in the creation of the accompanying apparatus of the volumes (his edition of Ján Hollý was also accompanied by a description of editorial manipulation of the text). The linguistic material of individual editions varied (the texts were in Bernolák’s Slovak, reformed Štúr’s Slovak, and Slovak deliberately preserving common elements with the Czech language). In the case of publishing living authors, the editor led constructive dialogues (Andrej Sládkovič, Jonáš Záborský) and when it came to authors who were no longer alive (J. Hollý), he consulted other literary specialists about the optimal form of interventions. The preservation of the author’s distinctive language was in tension with the intention to stabilise the Slovak language by normalising the linguistic character of published texts after the Hodža-Hattala reform. However, J. Viktorin also based his interventions on whether the element in question was important from the formal verse structure.
