Analyses on sources of legitimization bear, mostly, on theoretical reflection. The author aims to assess underpinnings of legitimacy in a quantitative way. This is an empirical study which examines determinants of subjective legitimization of government and social system in 21 European societies. Data comes from the first edition of European Social Survey carried out on national random samples in 2002. Legitimization is defined in terms of support for government, democracy, and economic policy of a given state. He aims, first, at assessing relative “levels” of legitimization throughout analyzed societies. Second, various sets of individual measures of social characteristics and attitudes are employed in order to establish some universal requirements of legitimacy. Third, an attempt is made to define macro-structural determinants of variations in legitimacy related to economic development, political system, degree of corruption and social structure. Finally, these findings are discussed in reference to most recent hipotheses concerning the relations between legitimization, welfare state and decreasing confidence and trust.

The article examines the problem of trust as a determinant of human capital management in local government units. In addition to the analytical and epistemological part, the text contains focus stud¬ies conducted among the representatives of senior management. The studies allow for the conclusion that among the major sources of crisis in the functioning of local government units is the crisis of trust resulting from the frequent changes in managerial/political positions, inadequate level of mana¬gerial competences and mental barriers, mainly in the form of suspicion and negative attitudes to the teams of officials employed by their predecessors.

Sociological literature expresses views that the key to efficient democracy lies in building social capital. Social trust is an essential constituent of social capital, in particular trust in political parties and political institutions associated with the executive (government, police, military), the legislative (parliament), and the judiciary (prosecutor's office, courts, constitutional tribunal) branch. According to many researchers, trust put in these institutions plays a major role in the development of beliefs and attitudes towards democracy. The article presents views and assessments on the functioning of social institutions in Poland given by secondary school graduates from Zielona Gora.

Parrhesia was a right of a free Greek citizen to express his opinion in public meetings and trials. The gradual decline of parrhesia in the judicial and political environment in conjunction with decline of democracy led to a strengthening of its meaning and its shift into the moral domain. The use of the term in the Septuagint usually has a religious undertone or context. It expresses often the relationship of men toward God. The use of the term in the First Epistle of John is very close to its use in the Septuagint. Parrhesia occurs in the First Epistle of John four times. In 1 John 2:28 it means the trust of those who 'stay' in Christ and in a way, it can be identified with this 'staying'. In 1 John 3:21 parrhesia-trust is an attempt to overcome existential moral doubt before God. Parrhesia in 1 John 4:17 brings its content close to perfect love as a result of the identity of Johannine disciples as God's children. Parrhesia in 1 John 5:14 is an existential statement of a Christian's life in God and before God.

The aim of the paper is to investigate the link between trust in national political institutions and macroeconomic performance in the long run in Eastern EU countries. The objective is to answer the question whether the liberalization process and the subsequent exposure to globalized markets realized macroeconomic outcomes that are still cause of concern for these young democracies. The empirical technique is the panel dynamic ordinary least square (PDOLS) estimator, through which the effect of inflation inequality and debt on citizens’ trust in national governments and national parliaments is evaluated in term of long-run dynamics. Results show a negative impact of the indicators considered and highlight the role of macro-variables in the institutional consolidation process even in presence of path dependence dynamics of trust.

It can be easily observed that the dark side of trust - corruption is growing significantly from year to year. The solution in this situation is implementing into practice trust management. The development of organizations depends on themselves but also on their relationships with the business partners. The greater the integrity and social responsibility of the organization, the greater the trust (confidence) and willingness of the organizations` partners. The importance of trust should also be noticed in the Polish reality, also outside of the business sphere. In recent years, the topic of the “crisis of trust” has become increasingly established in public discourse at global and national levels. The study aims to propose holistic understanding of the phenomenon of trust: what is its ontological status, what are its essential elements that constitute it. The authors argue with contemporary philosophers who deal with the issue of trust and draw their own conclusions from it. They understand trust as a cooperative predisposition that has a chiasmic relational character and is a condition and expression of our dependence on the world and at the same time a condition of optimistic openness to it. It is a special structural unity of reliance and vulnerability, understandable only through different perspectives (first- and third-person) and situational contexts. Human beings are never only in one particular trust, but rather in the whole network of trusts that surrounds it. Such a structure as a whole creates a specific atmosphere of co-existence, an atmosphere of trust.

This paper presents the relationship between three concepts: the crisis, trust and corporate governance. It was explained that the contemporary crisis is not only financial, but it has a much wider range, is an organizational crisis, social, and results from a crisis of confidence. One of the reasons for the lack of trust in business is lack of transparency. The article indicates that the tool that can help companies overcome the distrust is the introduction of corporate governance, which is based on a code of good practice. The aim is to foster good practices in business transparency, which in turn is the key to building confidence in the companies. Trust is an essential part of recovery. It may be assumed that the introduction of corporate governance is a positive sign of reaction to a crisis situation and a chance for a positive outcome of this situation.
