Artykuł podejmuje kwestię znaczenia wzajemnych relacji między kapitałem ludzkim oraz społecznym w stymulowaniu aktywności innowacyjnej (która stanowi przejaw inteligentnego rozwoju gospodarczego). W części empirycznej podjęto próbę oceny zakresu komplementarności kapitału ludzkiego oraz społecznego w krajach europejskich oraz rozpoznania charakteru związków występujących między wyposażeniem gospodarek w kapitał ludzki oraz społeczny a aktywnością innowacyjną przedsiębiorstw. Analizą objęto lata 2004-2012. Wykorzystano dane Eurostat, European Social Survey. Zastosowano analizę korelacji oraz metody taksonomiczne – porządkowania liniowego oraz aglomeracyjną Warda.

The article takes up the issue of the importance of mutual relations between human and social capital in stimulating innovative activities (which are the signs of the intelligent economic development). The empirical part attempts to assess the degree of complementarity of human and social capital among the European countries, as well as, to identify the nature of relations between the human and social capital and the innovative activities of enterprises. The analysis covers the period of 2004-2012 and uses data from Eurostat and the European Social Survey. The project utilizes a correlation analysis approach and the following taxonomic methods such as linear ordering and Ward’s agglomeration.
