The Czech academic community has a limited number of authors as well as a lack of scientific publications that deal with Central Asian problematic. The few Czech-language publications that have been published have not been devoted to historical, social, cultural, and political issues in Central Asian countries in greater detail. The purpose of this article is to fill this gap and to provide a historical, political, and socio-cultural view of southern Kyrgyzstan. In order to achieve this goal, the author of this article analyses the causes of the Kyrgyz-Uzbek ethnic conflict in 11-14 June 2010 in Osh. This analysis provides a framework for interpreting socio-cultural and political problems before and after the conflict that faced a southern region of Kyrgyzstan and shaped its view. This article is based on an analysis of various texts by experts and of the media, but also on the outputs of the author’s field research that lasted a total of six months between 2010–2013.
