The current times are full of uncertainty for start-ups. Unpredictable, ambiguous, complex operating conditions and hyper-competition pose a huge threat to them. They must constantly learn to recognize and mitigate the challenges posed by the world. The article presents the concept of VUCA and adapting the definition of a start-up to it, analyzes how companies react to changes in the environment (how these changes affect their position in the market - how they strengthen it or how they eliminate it from it). A review of the current literature and research on start-ups as well as examples of companies presented in the paper allow us to draw conclusions on how to function in today’s difficult conditions, what mistakes to avoid, how to manage when changes occur, what competences to develop and what to invest in.

Obecne czasy są dla start-up’ów pełne niepewności. Nieprzewidywalne, niejednoznaczne, złożone warunki funkcjonowania oraz hiperkonkurencja stanowią dla nich ogromne zagrożenie. Muszą one stale uczyć się rozpoznawania i łagodzenia wyzwań jakie niesie ze sobą współczesny świat. W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję VUCA i dostosowanie do niej definicji start-up’u, przeanalizowano w jaki sposób firmy reagują na zmiany otoczenia (jak zmiany te wpływają na ich pozycję na rynku - w jaki sposób ją wzmacniają lub jak je z niego eliminują). Przegląd aktualnej literatury i badań nad start-up’ami pozwalają na wyciągnięcie wniosków jak funkcjonować mają one w trudnych obecnie warunkach, jakich błędów unikać, jak zarządzać gdy pojawiają się zmiany, jakie kompetencje rozwijać i w co inwestować.
