The paper concerns an attitude towards art which is to be found in the writings of Theodor Lessing. Lessing’s reflections on art and its cultural role are presented in the context of his philosophy of history. The article is focused on the function which, according to Lessing, art fulfils in the process of creating history as well as lending credence to it. History itself is perceived by him as an arbitrary construct of Western culture, an ideological vision giving sense to the senseless.

The legend of Cleopatra VII in Western culture is a frequently researched topic. However, little thought is devoted to the Queen’s attributes which, as centuries passed, underwent frequent metamorphoses. In art and literature, the attributes and motifs associated with Cleopatra are mainly the crocodile, the pearl, the snake and the cat (the panther, the lion and the sphinx). These royal symbols seem to have lived their own “lives” and form an interesting linear pattern. Furthermore, their history is full of paradox. The crocodile, although probably attributed to Cleopatra by the Romans, never became Cleopatra’s perennial symbol. The famous cobra, initially huge and multiplied, was reduced over time to the size of a bracelet and was eventually replaced by the cat. The latter, undeniably an ancient animal, became Cleopatra’s symbol only in the nineteenth century. Moreover, most probably, the snake was not linked to Cleopatra because of the erotic association, neither was the cat assigned to her because she was a voluptuous witch. Modern representations of Cleopatra with African animals are not necessarily a misunderstanding.

Anthropology is a field broadly understood as a description of ubiquitous human existence as far as homo sapiens emerged from community of human being until present-day society. Anthropology provides description of mechanics of integration of societies or how they distance themselves from certain group and individuals. It describes permanence and changes of culture order. According to Mary Douglas‘s anthropological resolving I analyse – in perspective of anthropology – evolution of social attitudes in to people with disabilities. Basical questions of my article are – „who, why, how, what” normal people thinks about persons wiht disfunctions. I present specific conceptualisation of disability’s causes, ways of a treatment people with features of otherness in traditinal era and in postmodernism. I say – they give us something inducing to thinking about another face of humanity.

In today’s socio-political reality, human rights take an important place as part of the debate on the relationship between the citizen and the state. Against this background, we can distinguish those states which do not belong to the circle of Western culture, including China. The author raises the question of a presence of human rights in China, treating it as a philosophical issue. He points to the need for taking on a perspective of economic development as an opportunity to improve the situation of the individual. The author considers the possibility of an implementation of a new political model and indicates the threats to human rights in China.

Hedonism, driven by mass culture and widespread consumerism, is a salient factor in the modus vivendi of contemporary Western civilization. This general psychological and behavioral backdrop is exploited in the article as an opportunity to both reinvigorate and re-appraise the theoretical underpinnings of modern hedonism as developed by John Stuart Mill in his Utilitarianism. The article proceeds in two steps: Firstly, a detailed exposition of Mill’s arguments for the principle of utility is undertaken, with an accompanying elucidation of the core notions of utility, expediency, happiness, and pleasure. Secondly, five points of criticism (logical, phenomenological, and analytical in method) are raised to challenge what the author thinks are the weakest links in Mill’s syllogistic chain.

Description of modern Western culture is especially made from philosophical, sociological and political science perspective. Much less psychology understood as contemporary social science is used for analyzing cultural phenomena. The article uses developmental psychology as a frame for such analysis. The main idea is to compare adolescent crisis with the crisis of modern Western culture. Justas the identity crisis is in the heart of adolescence, the identity crisis is the center of transformation processes in Western culture. In this perspective, secularization may be seen as a manifestation of such crisis and the militant atheism as a manifestation of negative identity. The article also shows how processes attributed to adolescence such as emotional liability, rebellion, undermine authorities, increase ofconsciousness, and self-knowledge, moral independence and relativity thinking can be correlated with many phenomena associated with Western culture. The point of this text is that one can perceive modern Western culture as being in a process of maturation. There is not only the comparative analysis, but also some practical implications. The article also contains some recent researches analysis from psychology of religion and spirituality perspective related to secularization process incontemporary times.

By examining selected works by Stephen Gaukroger, Alfred North Whitehead, Lynn White, Jr., Benjamin Farrington, and Paul Gans, the author discusses the formation of Western culture and the intellectual tools and the social conditions that contributed (and still contribute) to its being. He concludes that a metaphysics and a realistic epistemology—based on an ancient Greek confidence in the human intellect, in its ability to reason to truths that acknowledge the immaterial character of human intellection—is required for the West to retain its identity and develop its own culture.

The author of this article compares three visions of modern thinkers who, observing the present world, see in it the threat of the coming apocalypse, in understanding the end of humanity in its traditional form. An uprooted and lost man not knowing his own culture faces the question: who is he? In the impossibility of answering, he becomes like unaware children who, living in ignorance, remain beyond the possibility of both condemnation and salvation. However, these children are in the process of growing up. When they reach maturity, they look for themselves, trying to become like others, but those others are in the same situation as them. Hence, a society of indefinite citizens, who, in danger, accuse one another, so that everyone becomes a scapegoat of which should be sacrificed to save the majority. Then everyone becomes the so-called homo sacer, a victim who has no right, not even the right to live. To prevent this, the three thinkers call for a return to forms of culture, where humanity is presented in a holistic form and by depicting it, modern man can create his identity.

Dla znalezienia odpowiedzi Marinko Zekić wskazał przyczyny, przebieg wzajemnych kontaktów i zarysował ich potencjalne następstwa w przyszłości. Bosnia and Herzegovina in the religious context of modern Europe. The process of Westernisation of Islam and Islamisation of the WestIn the review a book is discussed that addresses crucial issues of coexistence of culturally and religiously diverse societies. Its author, referring to the cultural, social and religious situation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in a broad historical context has shown the issue of functioning of the Muslims throughout the world in the past and presently. The review mentions that Marinko Zekić undertook an attempt to answer the question whether the present changes are leading to an Islamisation of the Western world or rather to a modernisation of the Islamic world. He also showed the reasons for mutual relations, their history and sketched their possible future consequences. The history of Islam and mutual relations between the Muslim world and the West were based on a thorough source material and a reinterpretation of the researchers’ opinions, as the author referred to the issue of threats and the vigorous dispute about the future of Western culture that strongly polarises the public opinion. M. Zekić analysed deeply the reasons for these concerns and finds them in the radical Islamic movements that result in the painful experience of terrorism.

These and other many questions interrogating the language of performance in global avant-garde Shakespeare productions are put forward to Grzegorz Bral, the director of the Song of the Goat ensemble in the context of their evolving performance of Macbeth (2006/2008) and their Songs of Lear (2012).

The author considers the problem of beauty. He identifies beauty as an analogically understood property of reality, of human products (including art), and of the human mode of conduct, and as that which, in the tradition of Western culture, is expressed under the form of harmony, perfection, or splendor, which as beheld and for beholding arouses complacency or pleasure. The article discusses the following topics: classical theories of beauty, beauty in the metaphysical conception, beauty in aesthetics, the separation of beauty from reality, and the problem of ugliness.
