Brief information on embroideries at folk costumes at Záhorie decorated with glass beads, colloquially referred to as “oves”, the “ovsovanie” embroidery technique. Another way of glass usage for the costume decoration was small pieces of mirror, colloquially referred to as “špígeuka”. This decoration was used at Záhorie mainly in the Chvojnická dolina valley (villages of Lopašov, Radošovce, Oreské, Dubovce, Trnovec, Popudinské Močidľany, Chropov, Holíč, Mokrý Háj, Kopčany and Kátov), in the vicinity of Unín (villages of Unín, Radimov and Štefanov) and in Jablonica and its surroundings (Hradište pod Vrátnom, Osuské, Cerová and Rozbehy) from the 1930s.

This study analyses the results of research on social-cultural activities which were conducted between the years 2010 and 2012 in villages in three districts of the Záhorie region. The research aimed to discover not only which social-cultural activities were held in the course of the year, but also the part played by civic associations registered in the villages in their organisation. The findings of the study show that there are three layers of social-cultural events. Firstly, there are events rooted in the traditional mode of life. The second layer is composed of what were originally centrally organised civic and political celebrations and activities, which have been transformed into amusements and recreational events. The third layer comprises events which are new or foreign to our cultural milieu but are accepted by the village community. The organisers of social-cultural events also may be divided into several groups. The first group comprises village administration; a second group includes civic associations of local firefighters, sportspeople and hunters, along with kindergartens and elementary schools; a third group is of mainly new civic associations, very varied in their fields of interest; a fourth, the least numerous, consists of non-governmental organisations with an all-Slovakia scope. A fifth group of civic associations are those which develop activities only within the narrow confines of their own membership.

In his collecting activity in Slovakia Karol Plicka (1894 – 1987) gave particular attention to the Záhorie region. Taking the example of the village of Jablonica in the eastern part of this region, we demonstrate the collector’s interest in the local song repertoire, individual singers, and the specific vocal style of ornamentation in Záhorie. Using source criticism, a repertoire was identified to the extent of 187 songs, recorded from 26 singers in this locality. Particularly useful are the written records of songs by the singers Pavol Pinkava and Agneša Pinkavová. Their song repertoire contains principally ballads, wedding, and dance and love songs. In his studies the collector also gave particular attention to Pavol Pinkava as an individual singer: the records of embellished singing as rendered by this singer are comparable to the records of the singing of Eva Studeničová, an outstanding singer from the village of Moravský sv. Ján in the western part of Záhorie. The records of songs performed by other singers are instructive as regards observation of song variants, and they highlight the contemporary condition and preservation of folk singing in local tradition.

The research focused on the events happening in the Protective Zone in 1939 ˗ 1945. The author draws from analysing the works already published as well as information available in the various Slovak archives. The research presents the following conclusions. Since March 1939, due to the Protective Zone location, the civilians were getting into wider contact with the German Armed Forces. In addition to the common military activities carried out by any army, the lively encounter was taking place even in the sports or cultural area. The drawback of the stay of the German Armed Forces included the recurring issues caused by the indecent behaviour of the German soldiers. The research results open certain new questions related to the history of Záhorie as well as the nature of the stay of the German Armed Forces in the Protective Zone. Further research is needed to provide new and deeper answers.
