Communication in science can be described as persuasive as far as it is characterized by the need to convince the community of recipients of the scientific value of one’s own results. Lexicography of academic language has to take this into consideration. But how can one describe the linguistic realisation of persuasive speech acts lexicographically in scientific communication? As this cannot be captured on the level of single words, but is rather expressed in the form of more complex struc­tures, the concepts of multi-word units, such as collocations, provide a useful approach. The paper pursues the question as to whether collocation is a suitable means for describing the presentation of the linguistic realisation of persuasive speech acts in science communication. The collocation Bild zeichnen that is used across disciplines serves as a basis for our analysis. We show how qualifying adjectives attributed to the noun Bild can establish reference to acquiring knowledge and thereby furnish the speech act with a persuasive character. Based on the results, we illustrate how an exten­ded concept of collocation can be applied to integrate the linguistic realisation of persuasive aspects of scientific communication in a lexicographic presentation.

DECODING OF ACADEMIC CONTENT BY THE 1st GRADE STUDENTS

In the paper a comparatistic study conducted on the 1st grade students of sociology and pedagogy is discussed. The study was focused on the language skills of students. The most important skills tested were the abilities to decode academic content. The study show that the student have very poor language skills of decoding the academic content on every level of its complexity. They have also noticable problems with the definition of basic academic terms. The significance of gained results are high because of the innovational topic and character of the study, which was the first such study conducted on students of a Polish university. Results are also valuable for academic teachers who are interested in such problems as efefctive communication with students.

The purpose of this paper is to describe some current deletion trends in modern spoken German. The study is based on orthographic transcriptions of academic talks made by German native speakers. The analysis has been conducted in order to show the most common phonetic reductions of the formal Standard German variety as used today in official situations in Germany. The linguistic data are taken from the GeWiss corpus, which is a comparative corpus of audio recordings and transcriptions of spoken academic languages (German, Polish, English). The research organizations involved were the Herder Institute at the University of Leipzig, Wrocław University and Aston University in Birmingham.

In order to guarantee fairness in learning and access to education regardless of social factors or first language, teachers need to be able to recognize not only the subject-specific, but also the linguistic aspects of their teaching, and develop the necessary competences in their students. This paper explains and illustrates how the module “Teaching immigrant pupils in their second language (German)” at the University of Bonn prepares teachers for this task.

The aim of this paper is to relate the concept of ESP to the idea of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) to work out a platform for the conceptualization of academic language as a context-reduced means of communication (Bernstein, 1971; 1999). Subsequently, the concept of talk-types (Moate, 2011) will be presented as a way of counteracting language de-contextualization and engendering restructuring of knowledge and the language itself. Theoretical considerations will be supported with the presentation of research on classroom interaction. It is aimed at highlighting how expert language is mediated in content learning with types of classroom talk and how the process of languaging (Swain, 2006a) facilitates both “taming” (Lankiewicz, 2013b) of the elaborated code and acquisition of expert knowledge.

For the past several years we have been observing a substantial growth of interest in studies in Poland among foreign students, partic-ular those from the East. The required level of language proficiency for Polish universities is B1 which is not difficult to achieve in a year. It is, however, by no means sufficient to participate in university classes, to follow academic discourse, to write papers or prepare for exams. This article presents the results of a research study conducted among academic lecturers and Polish language instructors teaching preparatory classes on the lacks and needs of foreign students. It also presents core demands regarding teaching Polish as a foreign language for academic purposes.

The paper looks into the current trends in the development of Russian and Ukrainian languages as discussed in the latest book authored by prof. Tetyana Kosmeda. The focus is on five aspects (distinguished by the above named researcher) of linguistic processes taking place at the moment within the Russian and Ukrainian language systems themselves such as: word manipulation, lexicographic issues, linguistic gender studies, the issue of spoken academic language and the language of teaching, and sociolinguistics. The validity of the research and the conclusions reached by prof. Tetyana Kosmeda were affirmatively verified, with great appreciation on the part of the author for the amazing precision and research skills of the Ukrainian linguist.

As a main criterion for building his own canon, the author takes the innovative character of the cinematic language and the rich symbolic imagery of the story.
