The aim of the article is to present the specificity of translating a selected group of Italian specialized terms into Polish. The set of terms that are the subject of analysis, determined on the basis of two basic criteria (formative and semantic), creates a class of lexical units with the same categorical value. Based on the formative criterion, the group of the studied initial terms in Italian was preliminarily narrowed down to the deverbal formations from the following participial forms of verbs: an active adjectival participle (affiliante), a passive adjectival participle (affiliato) and an adverbial participle (affiliando). The second of the mentioned criteria (semantic) limited the scope of the linguistic material examined in this study to the category of agentive nouns (names of personal doers); since the function of the doer sensu stricto, definable by the paraphrase “the one that performs the action indicated by the verb,” occurs essentially in derivatives of the first type, i.e. formed from the active adjectival participle, adottante “chi adotta” (“adopting, choosing”), the analysis was limited to this group of formations. The proposed contrastive analysis is an attempt to determine potential regularities and mechanisms in the translation of this group of terms into Polish.
