The Internet Meme as a Tool for Promoting Nationalism in the Network Society: The Case of “American Youth for Nationalism” Facebook PageIn view of the rapid growth of “online nationalism” in recent years, this study explores the contribution of Internet memes to promoting nationalism on the Internet. The presented discourse analysis of 150 nationalist-themed memes retrieved from Facebook was conducted with the aim of examining the mechanisms of this multimodal phenomenon. As such, then, the study investigated the nature of nationalist rhetoric in Internet memes. The findings indicate that they are an efficient platform for open and radical proliferation of nationalism online. The study also revealed the functions of memes in the process of disseminating nationalism: they function as a consolidating force for nationalistically-minded people, as a token of national identity, and as a platform of free speech. The article concludes that nationalism actively exploits the space of a new genre of Internet discourse – the Internet meme. Finally, it also notes some practical implications of the study and the perspective for future research in the field. W celu ukazania mechanizmów kierujących tym multimodalnym zjawiskiem analizie dyskursu poddano 150 memów o tematyce nacjonalistycznej zebranych na Facebooku. W rezultacie przedstawiony został charakter obecnej w memach internetowych retoryki nacjonalistycznej. Wyniki badania ukazują memy jako skuteczną platformę otwartego propagowania radykalnych treści narodowych online. Analiza ujawniła ponadto konkretne role, jakie mogą one odgrywać w rozpowszechnianiu nacjonalizmu. Memy stanowią zatem narzędzie pomagające jednoczyć osoby o podobnych przekonaniach, służą również jako znacznik tożsamości i platforma nieskrępowanej wolności wypowiedzi. Artykuł wyraźnie wskazuje, że nacjonalizm aktywnie korzysta z przestrzeni oferowanej przez nowy gatunek komunikacji internetowej, jaki stanowią memy. W zakończeniu zawarte zostały wnioski praktyczne oraz możliwe kierunki przyszłych badań.

This article takes a ludological approach to QAnon and investigates the conspiracy phenomenon as an Alternate Reality Game. Drawing extensively on media reportage of QAnon and reviewing its discussion in the domains of digital culture, media scholarship and game studies, connections between the QAnon conspiracy movement and digital game rhetorics in far-right online spaces are highlighted, with attention to the notions of Gamification and Dark Play. Exploring the intersection of digital game cultures, online conspiracy movements and political extremism, this paper invites scholarly attention to various aspects of QAnon from the fields of games studies and play studies. With the QAnon phenomenon highlighting the significant political impact and import of games culture, this paper shows that the field of ludology has much to offer a range of researchers in interpreting the motivations and meanings of the online communities from which QAnon emerged.

In July 2017, some American scholars accused alt-right groups of appropriating Jane Austen’s works for extreme-right propaganda. How could Austen’s texts – an author associated with the beginnings of feminism – be used by blatant misogynists? This clash of perceptions reveals a dispute between Austen’s broad reception as classically romantic romances and a whole range of narrow theoretical academic readings. In the analysis of this dispute, the paper outlines long-lasting threads of Austen’s interpretation in AngloAmerican culture, whose ideological reconstruction of the last few decades clashes with a nostalgia for imperial order.

Prawicowy populizm w Stanach Zjednoczonych i Unii Europejskiej jest jednym z wiodących trendów ich politycznej rzeczywistości. Stąd istnieje konieczność ustrukturyzowania wiedzy na temat tego zjawiska poprzez wyszczególnienie jego głównych wskaźników i wyjaśnienie ich przyczyn. Do głównych jego determinant należą wrogość wobec imigracji, postrzeganie wielonarodowych firm jako zagrożenie dla lokalnych rynków pracy, postulat redukcji biurokracji, antyelitaryzm, odmienne rozumienie polityki międzynarodowej połączone z nowym otwarciem w stosunkach z Rosją. Różnorakie ruchy populistyczne wynikają z kilku czynników, takich jak znaczny wzrost imigracji w Europie, narastanie długu publicznego, wszechogarniająca biurokracja, poważne znaczenie międzynarodowych korporacji, powódź ataków terrorystycznych lub negatywne tendencje demograficzne. Ideologię właściwego populizmu można odnieść do dwóch różnych tradycji: do indywidualistycznego libertarianizmu (który częściowo determinuje ideologię Tea Party i niektórych innych ruchów amerykańskich) oraz do prawicowego, kolektywistycznego, plemiennego tradycjonalizmu, bardziej powszechnego na Starym Kontynencie.

Right populism in the United States and in the European Union is one of the leading trends in their political reality. That is why we need to structurize our understanding of this phenomenon by listing its main indicators and by explaining its causal background. What seems to belong to the leading determinants of the phenomenon is: the hostility toward immigration, the perception of multinational companies as a threat to local labor markets, a postulate to reduce bureaucracy, anti-elitism, another understanding of international politics combined with a new opening in the relations with Russia. Various right populist movements result from several determinants such as a significant increase of immigration in Europe, the growth of national debt, expanding bureaucracy, growing importance of international corporations, a flood of terrorist attacks or negative demographic tendencies. The ideology of right populism can be referred to two different traditions: to individualist libertarianism (which partially determines the ideology of the Tea Party and some other American movements) and to alt-right, collectivist, tribal traditionalism, which is more common in the Old Continent.
