A Field Theoretical Model of the Polish Emigration to Other European Countries

This article presents a formalized field theory of international migration. Departing from the theories of Kurt Lewin, the author assumes that the valences of different migration targets create a field of attracting forces, which may trigger long-range “locomotions.” Moreover, the author hypothesizes that the selection among the different migration targets also depends on the perceived opportunities: the higher the number of vacancies at a target and the stronger the reporting about these vacancies by earlier migrants, the stronger the field of perceived opportunities. A mathematical model based on these theoretical assumptions is tested with data about migration from Poland to other EU countries. The goodness of fit of the model is quite high and seems to corroborate its field theoretical foundations. The model is further explored by simulating its behavior for different scenarios of valences and perceived opportunities. The article finishes with a summary from the perspective of analytical sociology.

Wielość podejść teoretycznych w socjologii nie przekłada sic na moc wyjaśniającą tej dyscypliny, która często poprzestaje na opisie rzeczywistości społecznej w pewnych abstrakcyjnych kategoriach. Z krytyki tej słabości wyrasta postulat stosowania perspektywy socjologii analitycznej. Jest to program badawczy zakorzeniony w strukturalnym indywidualizmie metodologicznym. Zakłada on, że cechy zbiorowości wynikają ze złożenia cech budujących je jednostek, zakorzenionych jednak w strukturach społecznych. Ten program, w centrum uwagi stawiający pojęcie mechanizmu społecznego, umożliwia powiązanie sfery mikro- i makroaktywności człowieka i jej konsekwencji − nie tylko tych planowanych i nie tylko tych racjonalnych. Podejście socjologii analitycznej daje nadzieję na redukcję niepewności generowanej przez świat społeczny oraz jest obietnicą lepiej zbadanych i lepiej zaprojektowanych polityk publicznych.

The abundance of theoretical approaches in sociology does not translate into explanatory potential of this discipline which nowadays too often finds mere description sufficient. The proposition of an "analytical sociology paradigm" stems from the disappointment with the indolence of sociology as a science unable to provide causal explanations. The paradigm is based on the concept of structural individualism and assumes that a characteristic of a collective can be derived from a set of characteristics of individuals which are mediated by the social structure. By setting "a social mechanism" as the central element of the explanatory process, this research programme effectively links micro and macrosphere of human activity and its consequences, regardless of whether they are planned or purposively rational. As such, "the analytical sociology" gives hope for a better, more accurate evaluation and design of public policies.

Socjologowie analityczni wydają się podzielać przekonanie, że najlepszym sposobem wyjaśniania zjawisk społecznych są teorie średniego zasięgu, a zachowania społeczne są wypadkową zachowań jednostek. Działania podmiotów w skali mikro realizują się na poziomie grup i instytucji społecznych, a poziom makro oddziałuje na jednostki poprzez fakty społeczne oraz kontekst, w którym dokonuje się socjalizacja. Program socjologii analitycznej miał w założeniu służyć pogłębieniu rozumienia zjawisk społecznych o wyjaśnienie mechanizmów ich powstawania. Nie wystarczy zaobserwowanie korelacji między zmiennymi, konieczne jest zanalizowanie tego, jak przebiega głęboka zależność między poszczególnymi elementami budującymi wyjaśniany mechanizm społeczny – dowodził Peter Hedström. Przy tak skonstruowanych postulatach teoretycznych i metodologicznych szczególną słabość dostrzega się w analizach z dziedziny socjologii historycznej. Socjologia historyczna może jednak przyjąć dodatkowe założenia metodologiczne, które pozwolą jej na włączenie niektórych założeń socjologii analitycznej i przez to wzbogacenie potencjału poznawczego socjologii historycznej, a także systematyzację i formalizację jej dorobku. Artykuł ma na celu pokazanie, że istnieje możliwość integracji socjologii analitycznej z socjologią historyczną. Socjologia historyczna może otrzymać nowy impuls badawczy poprzez wykorzystanie dostępnych archiwów historycznych i zastosowanie reguł metodologicznych proponowanych przez socjologię analityczną. Szczególnie ważne wydaje się zastosowanie analizy sieci społecznych.

Analytical sociologists seem to share the belief that mid-range theories are the best way to explain social phenomena, and that social behaviour is a product of individual behaviour. The activities of individuals at the micro level are carried out at the level of social groups and institutions, and the macro level influences individuals through social facts and the context in which socialisation takes place. The programme of analytical sociology was intended to deepen the understanding of social phenomena and to explain the mechanisms of their formation. It is not enough to observe the correla-tion relationships between the variables, it is necessary to analyse the deep dependence between the elements that build the social mechanism to be explained – argued Peter Hedström. With theoretical and methodological postulates constructed in such a way, a particular weakness is perceived in analyses in the field of historical sociology. Historical sociology, however, may adopt additional theoretical assumptions, which will allow it to adopt some of the methods of analytical sociology, and thus it may enrich the informative potential of historical sociology, as well as systematise and for-malise the discipline.The article aims to show that it is possible to integrate analytical so-ciology with historical sociology. Historical sociology can receive a new research impulse by making use of the available historical archives and ap-plying the methodological rules proposed by analytical sociology. The use of social network analysis seems to be of particular importance.

Artykuł przedstawia stanowisko teoretyczne w badaniu życia społecznego stojące na gruncie transcendentalnego realizmu i metodologicznego indywidualizmu (akceptującego realność ustrukuryzowanych bytów społecznych), uznające wysoką kompleksowość życia społecznego i jego ewolucyjny charakter. Stanowisko to formułowane jest w opozycji do konstruktywizmu i holizmu. Inspiracją do sposobu budowania teorii w naukach społecznych jest zreinterpretowane podejścia Alfreda Schutza. Reinterpretacja wskazuje na te zasadnicze cechy koncepcji Schutza, które lokują go bliżej teorii racjonalnego wyboru niż interpretatywnego postmodernizmu, za którego prekursora bywa uważany. Koncepcją bliską dyskutowanym w tekście postulatom jest socjologia analityczna, w tym akcentowane w niej ukierunkowanie na przyczynowe badanie mechanizmów społecznych i relacji mikro-makro.

The paper presents the theoretical approach to the research of social life based on transcendental realism and methodological individualism (accepting the existence of structured social entities), recognizing the high complexity of social life and its evolutionary character. This positio n is formulated in opposition to constructivism and holism. The mode of constructing social theories is inspired by a reinterpretation of Alfred Schütz’s approach that focuses on the features of Schütz’s concept which bring him closer to the rational choice theory than to interpretative postmodernism, even though he is often considered as the proponent of the latter. The ideas presented in the paper are close to those developed in the scope of analytical sociology, especially to its emphasis on causal research of social mechanisms and micro-macro relationships.
