Anyone undertaking a task to describe an attitude of John Paul II towards scholars of antiquity faces two problems: the innumerable mass of people he met throughout his life carrier and his personal scholar path which was not primarily patristic. He went from John of the Cross, Thomas Aquinas, Max Scheller towards contemporary phenomenology. Yet, „the Polish Pope” was gradually getting more and more interested in patristic studies. This article is a short study in Wojtyla’s understanding of the work, the method and the tasks of contemporary patrologists. In an allocution to the representatives of the Institute Sources Chretiennes, John Paul II declared that the development of patristic studies stayed in the bottom of his heart, for a credible formation of Christian intelligentsia, must always appeal to the fathers of our faith. Consequently, he considered patristic scholars’ work, as a bridge between life giving sources of theological knowledge i.e. Holy Scripture, Tradition of the Fathers and still unknown bank of the third millennium. Holy Father appraised and highly estimated historical-critical method applied in patristic studies. To understand the meaning of dogmas, the relation between the Holy Scriptures, Tradition and Magisterium, the Church cannot withhold from studies in antiquity. Humility, patience and perseverance are the most distinguished Christian virtues that should characterize scholars of antiquity. To a certain degree, Pope’s esteem towards patristic scholars, was noticeably accentuated by numerous nominations of the most distinguished patristic scholars to the honor of episcopate. The main message that John Paul II implicitly directed towards contemporary scholars of antiquity seemed to concentrate on pastoral dimension and reduced to a one phrase. If there is anything that, in the deformed and chaotic world of contemporary theology and philosophy, could restitute harmony and balance, it is the teaching of the Fathers of the Church.

Cyril is one of the most prominent persons of young Christian Church and also most important witnesses of Christian initiation in this Church. He's an author of Catechesis - one of most valuable treasures and most current writings of Christian antiquity as far as message is concerned. The Catechesis clearly introduce the way of Christian initiation, the way of initiation into subsequent truths of beliefs, which I will attempt to discover and present. They also deliver necessary (independent from time and places) sensibility of spirit and Christian rules. In present article I will try to answer the questions: whether nowadays this first, initial forms of initiation, about which we inquire from described here Catechesis, are able to influence as considerably, as they did 2000 years ago? Can they similarly affect the manners of modern children and youth?

Sources of the Early Byzantine Period describe Christian practices of using oil for medical purposes. These practices were not usual medical procedures. The sources describe the medical use of oil obtained from church lamps or given by clergymen or by holy men, whose prayers were believed to strengthened the “medical” properties of the oil. These practices were used by Christians in many provinces of the Eastern Roman Empire, including Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Bithynia.

Ancient Christian literature is a source of an enormous wealth of information, including observations of the eating habits of the Roman Empire inhabitants in the fourth and fifth centuries. Due to the obvious reasons, those accounts are scarce as they are usually found on the margins of other descriptions. Moreover, the information provided does not shed much light on the dietary habits of the people in late antiquity. The accounts gathered by me have references to eating bread, vegetables, fish, meat (rarely), wine and olive oil. There are sporadic cases where the Fathers of the Church mention in their writings other products consumed by the inhabitants of the Roman Empire.

The paper addresses the reasons why the late-antique clergy (4th – 5th century) moved from place to place in the light of ecclesiastical normative texts promulgated at episcopal assemblies of the Roman Empire. At times this mobility had its reasons in the canon law and sometimes in either personal ambition, prestige, disagreement with excommunication, or in various scandals. Canons established by synods and councils were our main source. The collections of normative texts are abundant and from this it is possible to reconstruct the parts of a wider picture of clerical disciplinary issues and of the many problems besetting Christians at that time. The question of clerical mobility needs further research, especially in the analysis of other late antique sources.

In this article we engaged in the issue of importance of pilgrimages for christian from late-antiquity period in the eyes of christian erduite, Paulinus of Nola. Paulinus of Nola was a poet and senator. He held the office of suffect consul in 377 AD and governor of Campanina in 381 AD. Then, after emperor Gratian’s death and many private causes, like the death of his brother and death of his child, Paulinus converted to a Christian faith and started an ascetic life in Nola. The rich source collection of his writings has not survived, but we tried to present a picture slice of life of a christian society in the IVth and Vth century. We discussed the importance of pilgrimages in a christian life, incentives for them, ways of treating pilgrims in holy places and the most popular directions of pilgrimages. Unfortunately, many issues are not mentioned by Paulinus, such as the dangers of travel or he was writing about some issues briefly, such as the relics and cult of it, which was related to the pilgrimages (relics were often some kind of souvenir from pilgrimage). The subject itself requires further researches, especially in analysis of other christian authors from the late-antiquity period.
