The article discusses the role of the psychoanalysis in studies of literature. The author believes that C.G. Jung’s conception of anima is one of the most important ideas that explain the notion of femininity and its place in the subconscious process of the man’s psyche. The analysis of the character structure and the symbolic layer in few novels of Vladimir Nabokov shows that the tetragonal model of anima influenced the image of the women portrаyed by him.

The aim of this article is to discuss Agamben’s distinction between dzoē and bios and verify if the category of bare life would be relevant to the life of animals. At first glance, following Agamben’s line of thought, one might say that the very helplessness of the modern law in the face of dzoē results in ephemeral and certainly not inalienable animal rights. Thus, what Agamben calls homo sacer would also refer to animals as animal sacrum. However, when extended to include animals, Agamben’s philosophical project shows serious constraints which are cleverly camouflaged under the linguistic argument and his rather selective interpretation of Aristotle’s works.

Anima, Spiritus, Mens in Sepulchral Inscriptions from the Carmina Latina Epigraphica. Philological Approximations

The subject of this study is the meaning of the words anima, spiritus and mens in the metrical sepulchral inscriptions in the Carmina Latina Epigraphica collection published at the end of the 19th century by Franz Buecheler. This collection comprises almost 1,900 texts, of which around 1,400 are funerary and, particularly, sepulchral inscriptions. This article consists of three sections. The first contains general comments on Roman sepulchral inscriptions. The second, and most important part uses a conventional philological method to analyze the words in the source texts that denote the immaterial aspect of the human being that continues after death. The analysis of the texts reveals that the word anima occurs about 80 times, spiritus – 20, and mens only three times. These three words stand for what is usually expressed by the word “soul,” that is, the spiritual, immaterial aspect of the human being. Conclusions are presented gradually as the analytical compilation proceeds. Firstly, there is no semantic difference between anima and spiritus; although the word animus which is close to the three words discussed in this paper does not occur in this sense in the inscriptions. Secondly, both pagan and Christian inscriptions emphasize the dichotomy between anima or spiritus and corpus or caro (alternatively membra); some Christian inscriptions, pointing to this dichotomy, express belief in the resurrection. Thirdly, despite the difference in beliefs, Roman worshipers and Christians used very similar patterns of statements about the posthumous fate of the soul, for example, astra tenent animam, astra fovent animam, anima migravit ad astra or spiritus astra tenet, spiritus petit ad astra, mens caeli perget ad astra, which means that the Christian funerary language did not develop its distinct terminology for several centuries. The third section is a very brief summary of the study carried out.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza Jungowskich wątków w tekstach grającej progresywny metal amerykańskiej grupy Tool. Maynard James Keenan, wokalista i autor tekstów, zawsze przyznawał się do swojej fascynacji teoriami Carla Gustava Junga i Josepha Campbella, a tropy Jungowskie, poza piosenkami, można odnaleźć również w grafice okładek albumów, w promocyjnych teledyskach oraz w oprawie wizualnej koncertów zespołu. W słowach piosenek Keenan bezpośrednio lub pośrednio nawiązuje do kolejnych etapów Jungowskiego procesu indywiduacji, ewolucji duchowej i transformacji, którego celem jest całkowita integracja świadomych i nieświadomych treści psychiki. W tekstach z albumów Opiate i Undertow Keenan wyraża poczucie konieczności duchowego rozwoju oraz integracji persony, maski służącej kontaktom ze światem zewnętrznym. Powracającym motywem na pierwszych płytach Toola jest również konfrontacja z cieniem, którego wyparcie powoduje fragmentację i dezintegrację psychiki. Płyta Ænima podejmuje wątek potrzeby zrozumienia i integracji animy, nieświadomego pierwiastka żeńskiego w psychice mężczyzny, oraz koncentruje się na wynikającym z tego duchowym oczyszczeniu. Końcową fazą procesu indywiduacji jest dotarcie do Jaźni – przekroczenie wszelkich przeciwieństw i odkrycie boskiego pierwiastka w człowieku. Oznacza to całkowitą równowagę funkcji psychicznych symbolicznie odzwierciedloną w perfekcyjnym kształcie spirali. Ten etap rozwoju duchowego jest przedmiotem refleksji w tekstach niektórych piosenek z albumu Lateralus.

The aim of this paper is to analyse Jungian tropes in the lyrics of an American progressive rock band, Tool. Maynard James Keenan, the singer and lyricist, has always admitted to his enduring fascination with the theories of Carl Gustav Jung and Joseph Campbell and, apart from the songs, Jungian tropes are also evident in the album covers, promotional videos and the visuals of the group’s live shows. In his lyrics, Keenan directly or indirectly refers to the consecutive stages of Jung’s process of individuation, continuous spiritual evolution and Ewolucja duchowa i lewatywa: Jungowskie tropy w twórczości zespołu Tool transformation. Its aim is the complete integration of the conscious with the unconscious in the psyche. In the songs from Opiate and Undertow, Keenan expresses his sense of the need for spiritual development and integration of the persona, the mask used in one’s contacts with the outside world. Another recurring motif in the first albums is confrontation with the shadow, which, when repressed, brings about the fragmentation and disintegration of the psyche. The album Ænima focuses on the necessity to understand and realise the anima, an unconscious female element in a man’s psyche, which leads to spiritual cleansing. The final phase of individuation is the Self – the transcendence of all opposites and the discovery of the divine in a human being. It means a total balance of all mental functions, which is symbolically reflected in the perfect shape of the spiral. This stage of the spiritual evolution is addressed in the lyrics of several songs from Lateralus.

Das Thema der Liebe wird in der Philosophie seit der Antike aufgegriffen, und wie in anderen Bereichen der Überlegungen wurde bisher keine gemeinsame Meinung zu diesem Thema erarbeitet. Der amerikanische Jung-Analytiker Robert A. Johnson kam bei der Analyse der westlichen Gesellschaft zum Schluss, dass die darin funktionierenden Ideen der Liebe voll von inneren Widersprüchen sind. Das Ziel des Artikels ist es, Johnsons Konzept der romantischen Liebe näher zu bringen, das einige Lücken in den bisherigen Überlegungen füllt und eine erweiterte Perspektive auf das Thema der Liebe bietet. Der Artikel zeigt auch die vom Analytiker vorgeschlagene Entstehung der westlichen Idee der romantischen Liebe, die weiter als in die Ära der Romantik zurückreicht. Es werden ebenfalls die Gründe für die Verwirrung westlicher Einstellungen zur Liebe geschildert. Der letzte Punkt ist die Darstellung von Johnsons Vorschlag, das Problem auf der Grundlage der analytischen Psychologie von Jung zu lösen.

Temat miłości jest podejmowany w filozofii od starożytności i, podobnie jak w innych obszarach rozważań, nie osiągnięto dotychczas wspólnego poglądu na tę kwestię. Amerykański analityk jungowski Robert A. Johnson, analizując Zachodnie społeczeństwo, doszedł do wniosku, że funkcjonujące w nim idee miłości są pełne wewnętrznych sprzeczności. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie Johnsonowskiej koncepcji miłości romantycznej, która wypełnia niektóre luki w dotychczasowych rozważaniach i oferuje poszerzenie perspektywy na problem miłości. Artykuł prezentuje także sugerowaną przez analityka genezę zachodniej idei miłości romantycznej, która sięga dalej niż epoka romantyzmu. Opisane są również przyczyny pomieszania zachodnich postaw wobec miłości. Ostatnim punktem jest przedstawienie wysuniętej przez Johnsona propozycji rozwiązania tego problemu, w oparciu o jungowską psychologię analityczną.

The topic of love has been discussed in philosophy since the ancient times, and, as in other areas of philosophical deliberations, a common perspective on the matter has not yet been reached. Observing Western society, American Jungian analyst Robert A. Johnson reached a conclusion that ideas about love, which function in this society, are full of inner contradictions. The aim of this article is to present Johnson’s concept of romantic love, which fills in certain gaps in existing theories and offers a broadening of perspective on the problem of love. The article presents the analyst’s opinion regarding the genesis of the Western idea of romantic love, which goes back further than Romanticism. The causes of the mixed attitudes towards love in the West are also discussed. Finally, the article presents Johnson’s suggestion on solving this issue, based on Jungian analytical psychology.

L’anima e di natura spirituale, pero la spiritualita dell’anima non e evidente. Per scoprirla non basta la semplice autocoscienza, l’introspezione, come intendeva sant”Agostino. Secondo l”Aquinate ci vuole diligens et subtilis inquisitio. Occorre dimostrarla. Punto di partenza della indagine (inquisitio) sono le operazioni dell’anima, perche il modo di operare di una cosa corrisponde al suo modo di essere. San Tommaso riconduce tutta la gamma dell’agire dell’anima razionale a due facolta principali: l’intelletto e la volonta.

The novel entitled Novendialia (2008) by a Ukrainian authoress Maryna Sokolian (1979) with elements of a detective story and urban horror tells about fights between life energy kidnappers and its defenders employed by the Night Town Hall. In the text religious and psychologic aspects of various allusions are considered as well as authoress’ implications of fictitious mythicalmagical system from the point of view of religion, philosophy, psychology (especially psychoanalysis). The price of life and death proves that the writer fits in the type of a novel on selffulfilment, sacrifice and passions.

Powieść Novendialia (2008) ukraińskiej autorki Maryny Sokolian (ur. 1979) z elementami detektywistycznymi i horroru miejskiego opowiada o bitwach pomiędzy porywaczami energii życiowej a jej obrońcami ze służby Nocnego Magistratu. W tekście rozważane są religijne i psychologiczne aspekty rozmaitych aluzji oraz implikacje wyobrażonego autorskiego systemu mitycznomagicznego z punktu widzenia religii, filozofii, psychologii (zwłaszcza psychoanalizy). Cena życia i śmierci dowodzi, że pisarka wpisuje się w typ powieści o samorealizacji, poświęceniu i namiętnościach.
