In theatrical play created by Monika Strzępka and Paweł Demirski the figure of anti-hero becomes part of artistic strategy. The article examines selected performances and demonstrates how the anti-hero character is constructed. This creation involves radical redefining of certain cultural, literary and historical tropes which contemporary mass culture generates. The archetypal figure is dismantled by means of certain techniques such as deconstruction, re-codification, synthesizing the character or exposing his conventional nature. As a result of these artistic strategies the anti-hero’s identity is blurred, self-contradictory and frequently devaluated.

Pacho, the Brigand of Hybe (dir. Martin Ťapák, 1975) was announced in the press as the first truly Slovak comedy. In fact, it is a parody of the theme of brigands. Brigands’s topic was present in the Slovak cinema from its origins. From the first story Jánošík (1921) to the superproduction under the same title made by Paľo Bielik (1962–1963), the problem has always expressed the idea of freedom of the ever subdued, tormented Slovak people. Pacho, as a parody refers not only – or not so much – to the legend of brigands, as to the superproduction directed by Bielik, the giant of Slovak film history.

In the article “The Contemporary Crime Novel as a Variation on the Superhero Theme. Preliminary Thoughts,” I draw attention to the detective as the key figure of stories narrating the fight against evil. The detective’s behavior, decisions, and mentality all make him a figure quite compatible with the comic book superhero. I attempt to lay out features common to the detective and superhero, placing emphasis on the symbolism of the mask and disguise donned either metaphorically or literally in the confrontation with evildoers. I also discuss the complex nature of ordinariness and weakness as defining features of the contemporary detective, for they allow us to view the crime novel hero as an antihero, a figure that simultaneously (and somewhat paradoxically) is embodied in the role of the superhero.

The anti-hero in symbolic spaces

Background and Problem. The issue of the presence of a hero, who was actually an anti-hero, in the symbolic space of the Polish People’s Republic (PPR), has been described from the perspective of the sociology of culture and cultural anthropology, the history of the last century and semiology (symbolism). The study concerns Gen. Karol Swierczewski. Material and Method. A content analysis of literature and a broad thematic discourse [Krippendorf 2004] of resources and studies were the methods used. Iconographic material and visual sociology were also used. Results and Conclusion. During the time of the PPR the myth of Gen. Swierczewski and a few others like him was created in place of the chivalric and libertarian ethos Polish patriots were replaced by an internationalist combatant. Up to 1988 or 1989, i.e. until the end of the PPR, Swierczewski was present in the country’s symbolic spaces, in different institutions and in small graphic forms (banknotes, postage stamps), etc. Then followed the process of the disappearance of the name and the person. Preserved artefacts illustrate this particular situation where, in the new political reality imposed by force a traitor to the country and the nation, is put on a pedestal, as a hero.

Perspektywa i problem. Na gruncie socjologii kultury i antropologii kulturowej, historii ostatniego stulecia i semiologii (symbolika) podjęto problem obecności w przestrzeni symbolicznej Polskiej Rzeczypospolitej Ludowej bohatera, który właściwie był antybohaterem. Rzecz dotyczy gen. Karola Świerczewskiego. Materiał i metoda. Zastosowano metodę analizy treści literatury przedmiotu oraz szerokiego tematycznego dyskursu źródeł i opracowań. Uwzględniono również materiał ikonograficzny. Dodatkowo wykorzystano metodę socjologii wizualnej (analiza fotografii). Wyniki i wnioski. W okresie PRL-u w miejsce etosu rycerskiego i wolnościowego tworzono mit Świerczewskiego.
