The article shows that archaic language is one of the components and methods of the detection of historical memory of Ukrainians. The analysis of the use of such elements in Old Ukrainian literary language of the 14-18th centuries., in Ukrainian literary language of the 19-20th centuries and in modern Ukrainian dialects has proved “Ukrainianness” of some archaic elements of the Ukrainian language, which are perceived by the language awareness of the modern Ukrainian as elements of the Russian language rather than the elements of its national identity in the diachronic dimension, as these words do exist in the modern Russian literary language, while in the New Ukrainian literary language they are replaced by other lexemes. It is shown that such archaisms in the language awareness of educated Ukrainians, including writers, acquire additional connotations and update their historical memory.

The available literature lacks detailed and reliable account of the origins of teaching Polish and publishing Polish schoolbooks in Brazil. Hieronim Durski’s book Elementarz… is the first and only bilingual (Polish and Portuguese) textbook written specifically for Brazilian schools. It is an extraordinary work, since it documents a language that no longer exists and attests to archaic forms both in Polish and Portuguese. The analysis of vocabulary from the textbook reveals that as early as towards the end of the 19th century many words of Portuguese origin have penetrated the Polish language in Brazil. Other interferences (semantic or syntactic) have also occurred. The study employs a contrastive method, i.e., establishing a set of contrastive features for the two bases (Polish along with it variants and the Brazilian Portuguese variant).

Wśród dostępnych opracowań brakuje szczegółowych i miarodajnych studiów na temat początków nauczania języka polskiego i podręczników wydawanych w Brazylii. Elementarz… Hieronima Durskiego jest pierwszym i jedynym dwujęzycznym (polsko-portugalskim) podręcznikiem napisanym dla szkół brazylijskich. Jest to dzieło wyjątkowe, bo dokumentujące język, którego już nie ma, i poświadczające formy archaiczne zarówno w języku polskim, jak i w portugalskim. Analiza leksyki z podręcznika dowodzi, że do języka polskiego w Brazylii już pod koniec wieku XIX przenikało wiele słów pochodzenia portugalskiego. Zdarzają się również interferencje innego typu (semantyczne czy składniowe). W badaniach wykorzystano metodę kontrastu polegającą na wyodrębnieniu zespołu cech kontrastowych wobec dwóch podstaw (języka polskiego i jego wariantów oraz języka portugalskiego w wariancie brazylijskim).
