“Report on the archives in Nieśwież” of November 6th, 1857, was a description of the inventory work conducted in this archive in the years 1854–1857. It was submitted by Ludwik Rodziewicz for acceptance to the Radziwiłłs’ archivist Romuald Symonowiczowi. Later this report was to be forwarded to the superiors, i.e. Wittgensteins and Radziwiłłs. In the published source the attention is drawn to the archivists’ way of thinking, adopted by them priorities and suggestions regarding the archival description details as well as planning and scope of the records registration. This was a part of the archive-creating process associated with the inventory work carried out by archivists Romuald Symonowicz and Michał Szyszko Bohusz. “Report on the archives in Nieśwież” gives detailed answers to the questions: 1) Who and why collected and stored the archival records, 2) how the process of appraisal looked like, 3) How it was cared about the archives and how the records were ordered, and 4) How the records were used in the magnate archive in Nieśwież in the late 19. c.

This text is a contribution to the history of the Radziwiłł Family archives in Nieśwież into which were added archival records gathered in Biała village. The basis for the description of the archives in Biała village were commands of Anna Katarzyna Radziwiłł, née Sanguszko (1676–1746) issued in September and October 1736. At that time it was decided to displace the archives. The decisions taken at that time were source of knowledge on the holdings of the archives in Biała, state of the records elaboration and employees. The Greater Library (Latin), and most of the archives belonging to the entail Nieśwież and Ołyka were transported to Nieswież with the exception of records that were needed for the current administration of goods of Anna Katarzyna Radziwiłł and her younger son, Hieronim Florian Radziwiłł (1715–1760). Year 1736 was significant for the history of the Radziwiłł Family archives as it was when a new building of the archive and library was opened in Biała village by order of Anna Katarzyna Radziwiłł.
