The study is about experiences of Czech participants of the Ayahuasca sessions taking place in Europe. Owing to the expansion of spiritual tourism, some people seek the experience with the hallucinogenic vine Ayahuasca in particular. This plant is used during Ayahuasca sessions, usually led by a shaman coming from South America. The purpose of the research of this work is to investigate the motivations of the participants, the form of ceremonies taking place in Europe, mental experience of the participants, and last but not least how they evaluate their experience. It is a qualitative research. The research file consists of twenty participants. The results bring a fundamental insight into this problem – involving several categories of motivation, describing the ceremony, including its organization part, and illustrating mental experience of the participants. Although the participants mentioned only positive experiences, it is necessary to take into consideration the risk associated with this phenomenon.

Výsledky přinášejí základní vhled do zkoumané problematiky - rozlišují několik kategorií motivace účastníků, popisují průběh rituálu, včetně jeho organizační složky, a vypovídají o psychickém prožitku účastníků. Přestože respondenti vypovídají pouze o pozitivních zkušenostech, je třeba brát v úvahu rizika spojená s tímto jevem.

An indigenous Shuar community in Ecuador have been hosting tourists seeking retreats that feature traditional medicinal plants such as ayahuasca and tobacco. The community has provided individual ceremonies with the plants, or more complex rites such as Natemamu. Natemamu is a rite that is comprised of repetitive ceremonies lasting ten to twelve days, which involves drinking large quantities of Ayahuasca. The author primarily focuses on: 1) the commodification of the Shuar Natemamu rite as a product that is offered on the global market; and 2) the impacts of this commercial trade on the hosts and visitors. This article is based on data collected by means of participant observation, interviews, and audio-visual documentations. The findings imply that the introduction of western tourists to the Shuar community and its rites has contributed to processual changes to the rite and to ideational and material changes on both sides. Furthermore, the find- ings suggest that while the tourists experienced more ideational changes, the impact on Shuars was more material. This seems to be in accordance with the respective expectations of the encounter of both groups.
