W artykule przeprowadzono analize i ocene stanu oraz zmian sytuacji mieszkaniowej w Polsce lat 1988-2007. W okresie tym pojawia sie szereg cech i zróżnicowań sytuacji mieszkaniowej, swiadczacych – mimo poprawy wielu jej elementów – o strukturalnym kryzysie w tej dziedzinie, przybierajacym inna niż przed 1989 r. forme. Strukturalne pogorszenie sytuacji mieszkaniowej przekłada sie w wymiarze społecznym przede wszystkim na wzrost deficytu mieszkan i spadek samodzielnosci zamieszkiwania gospodarstw domowych. Statystyka nie informuje przy tym o wielu istotnych zrónicowaniach społecznych oraz opiniach zwiazanych ze zmianami sytuacji mieszkaniowej, sygnalizowanych w badaniach reprezentacyjnych.

The paper includes an analysis and assessment of the condition and changes in the housing situation in Poland in 1988-2007. A number of features and diversifications of the housing situation appeared in that period which demonstrate that, although many elements of that situation have been improved, there is a structural crisis in the field, which takes a different form than that before 1989. The structural deterioration of the housing situation translates, in the social dimension, first of all into the increase of housing deficit and decline of independence of living of households. Statistics does not inform of many, significant social diversifications and opinions related to changes in the housing situations, which are mentioned in sample surveys.

W artykule przedstawiono sylwetkę prof. Jana Piekałkiewicza — wybitnego statystyka, ekonomisty i polityka — począwszy od powstania w 1918 r. państwa polskiego aż do tragicznej śmierci uczonego z rąk gestapo w 1943 r. Podkreślono również rolę Polskiego Towarzystwa Statystycznego (powołanego w 1912 r.) w opracowaniu informacji statystycznych z trzech zaborów oraz starania statystyków i przedstawicieli innych środowisk, które doprowadziły do powołania w lipcu 1918 r. Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego. Uwydatniono wkład prof. Piekałkiewicza w rozwój GUS w pierwszych latach jego działalności oraz przybliżono dorobek naukowy profesora i jego pracę dydaktyczną w zakresie statystyki prowadzoną na wyższych uczelniach. Wspomniano również o jego aktywności jako polityka.

The article presents the profile of Prof. Jan Piekałkiewicz — an outstanding statistician, economist and politician — starting from the creation of the Polish state in 1918 until the tragic death of the scientist caused by the Gestapo in 1943. It also highlights the role of the Polish Statistical Association (founded in 1912) in the preparation of statistical information from the three partitions and the efforts of statisticians and representatives of other circles, which led to the establishment of Statistics Poland in July 1918. Contribution of Prof. Piekałkiewicz to the development of Statistics Poland in the first years of his activity was highlighted, as well as his scientific achievements and didactic work in the field of statistics conducted at universities were presented. His activity as a politician was also mentioned.

Autor przedstawia, w ogólnym zarysie, swoje kontakty z „Wiadomościami Statystycznymi” („WS”) oraz tematykę badawczą podejmowaną na łamach czasopisma. Wspomina pierwszych redaktorów naczelnych i współpracę z redakcją. Omawia niektóre swoje artykuły opublikowane w „WS”, poświęcone głównie: badaniom reprezentacyjnym, jakości danych statystycznych, metodyce badania i analizie ubóstwa, problematyce badania cen konsumpcyjnych, metodom estymacji dla małych obszarów oraz globalnemu zarządzaniu jakością (TQM). Na zakończenie dzieli się refleksjami po 60 latach doświadczeń zawodowych i wymienia niektóre osiągnięcia statystyków z kraju i zagranicy, z którymi współpracował.

The author presents a general overview of his contacts with „Statistical News" and research topics covered by the journal. He recalls the first editors-in-chief and cooperation with the editorial board. The author discusses some of his articles published in „Statistical News” devoted mainly to: sample surveys, quality of statistical data, methodology of poverty research and its analysis, consumer prices research, estimation method for small areas as well as total quality management (TQM). Finally, the author shares his reflections on 60 years of professional experience and mentions some of the achievements of national and foreign statisticians he cooperated with.
