W poniższym artykule omówiono zagadnienie biografii trumny przez pryzmat zdarzeń biograficznych wspólnych dla wielu nowożytnych obiektów z ziem polskich. Celem tych działań było wskazanie dawnej i obecnej funkcji trumny przez rozpoznanie ciągu jej życia – od jej powstania (ustalenie wytwórcy i odbiorcy; techniki wykonania, kształtu, wielkości, zdobień), poprzez „uczestnictwo” w ceremonii pogrzebowej, w tym eksportację zmarłego do świątyni, „wystawienie”, złożenie w grobie, czas „ukrycia” – do jej powrotu do życia (np. jako eksponat muzealny). Ustalono, że na każdym etapie „życia”, trumna pełniła rolę informacyjną i ochronną. Dodatkowo, na etapie powrotu do życia przyjmuje ona cenną dla badaczy tematu funkcję weryfikacyjną i identyfikującą. Ponadto konserwacja pochówków indywidualnych w trumnach oraz krypt sprzyja promowaniu turystyki obiektów sakralnych, a w przestrzeni świątyni trumny posiadają szczególny potencjał wystawienniczy, który może zostać wykorzystany w celu budowania narodowej i lokalnej wspólnoty.

This paper discusses the issue of a biography of a coffin from the perspective of biographical events common to many modern artefacts from the Polish territory. The aim was to identify past and present functions by determining the life cycle of a coffin: from its manufacturing (determination of its manufacturer and recipient; manufacturing techniques; the shape; the size; ornamentation) through ‘participation’ in a funeral ceremony, including transportation of the dead to the church, viewing, inhumation, the period of ‘concealment’, to its revival (e.g. as a museum exhibit). It was determined that at each stage of its ‘life’, the coffin served informative and protective purposes. Additionally, at the stage of its revival, it serves an important verification and identification function from the perspective of researchers in the field. Moreover, preservation of individual burials in coffins and crypts promotes sacral tourism; coffins in the church space have enormous exhibition potential that can be used to build a national and local community.

W artykule podjęto próbę wykorzystania metody biografii rzeczy do badań nad zabawką dziecięcą. Celem tekstu jest pokazanie możliwości zastosowania wybranych elementów biografii rzeczy w badaniach historyczno-pedagogicznych nad zabawką dziecięcą. Kwestia ta jest istotna, ponieważ polega na spojrzeniu z innej perspektywy na ową rzecz (przedmiot materialny), która do tej pory w badaniach pełniła rolę tekstu poddawanego analizie zgodnie z założeniami konstruktywizmu. Głównym celem takiego podejścia była rekonstrukcja zabawek i zabaw dziecięcych w różnych okresach historycznych. Wprowadzenie do badań biografii rzeczy pozwoli pokazać linearny ciąg życia zabawki – od jej powstania, poprzez przebywanie w ręku dziecka, czas hibernacji, do jej powrotu do życia. W tekście pokazano przykładowe życie lalki „szrajerki” w tzw. długim trwaniu. Przedstawiono sposób wyrobu przedmiotu, jego cel, rynek zbytu (pierwsze życie zabawki), czas hibernacji oraz drugie życie „szrajerki” jako eksponatu muzealnego, części kolekcji prywatnej i zabawki w ręku dziecka. Ta ostatnia opcja przywraca podstawową funkcję lalki – funkcję ludyczną.

The article attempts to use the biography of things in order to carry out research on children’s toy. The aim of the text is to show the possibility of using certain elements of the biography of things in historical and pedagogical research on a child’s toy. This issue is important because it makes it possible to look at a toy from a different perspective – as a thing (material object), which, until now, in the research has served as a text that has been analyzed in accordance with the assumptions of constructivism. The main purpose of this approach was the reconstruction of children’s toys and plays in various historical periods. Using the method of the biography of things in the research shall make it possible to present the linear life sequence of a toy - from its inception, through being in the child’s hand, the time of hibernation, until time when the toy returns to life. The text shows an example of the life of the Szrajerka doll in the so-called long period of duration. The author presents the way of producing the object, its purpose, market (the first life of the toy), time of hibernation and the second life of Szrajerka as a museum exhibit, a part of a private collection, or a toy in the hands of a child. The latter option restores the basic function of the doll – a ludic function.

Niniejszy artykuł ma za zadanie przybliżyć czytelnikowi antropologię rzeczy, postrzeganą przez autora jako próba zerwania z tradycyjną opozycją materia – duch. W ramach tego nurtu rozwija się praktyka biografii rzeczy, dążąca do „przywrócenia głosu” przedmiotom do tej pory uznawanym za całkowicie bierne i zależne od człowieka. Na podstawie konkretnego przykładu autor stara się wykazać, iż przedmioty mogą stanowić istotne źródło refleksji etnograficznej.

In this article author tries to familiarize the reader with the anthropology of things perceived as an attempt to break with the traditional opposition matter – spirit. As part of this trend is growing research practice known as biography of things, which is striving to restore “the voice” of objects, so far considered as totally passive and dependent on humans. Based on the example author tries to prove that items which we use every day can serve as a valuable tool for ethnographic reflection.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę tzw. trudnego dziedzictwa z perspektywy koncepcji teoretycznej określanej w literaturze mianem biografii rzeczy. W pierwszej części tekstu omawiam polskie badania w ramach archeologii współczesności nad trudnym dziedzictwem. Następnie szkicuję bliżej założenia biograficznego podejścia do badania relacji między ludźmi, rzeczami i miejscami. Ostatnia część pracy to studium przypadku, w którym krótko prezentuję biografie trzech przedmiotów pochodzących z terenu pierwszowojennego obozu jenieckiego w Czersku – obiektu niewątpliwie będącego przykładem trudnego dziedzictwa. Celem pracy jest próba prezentacji tezy mówiącej, że archeologie współczesności nie mogą być sprowadzane jedynie do archeologii martyrologii i że kultura materialna z niedawnej przeszłości pozwala na szkicowanie różnego rodzaju narracji związanych z trudnym dziedzictwem.

This paper discusses the concept of difficult/dark heritage from a theoretical perspective known as the biography of things. First, I analyse Polish archaeological research on difficult/dark heritage. Second, I describe in greater detail the biography of things as a tool for studying relationships between people, things and places. The last part of the paper is a case study presenting the biographies of three objects found in the grounds of a prisoner-of-war camp in Czersk. I aim to prove the following theses: 1) archaeologies of the recent past cannot be understood simply as the archaeology of martyrdom; 2) material culture from the recent past allows us to create different kinds of narratives connected with dark heritage.

Three collections of photographs depicting ethnographical research are subject of analysis. The author uses them to show differences between local and foreign patterns of working in the field. The significant role of wandering is stressed as a unique property of ethnographers’ work. Another factor strongly influencing this professional group’s habitus is class distinction, typical for bourgeois circles. It is said to affect the way the subjects of research are usually treated. Also, the author muses over the relationship of photography as a medium and a peculiar act of collecting and gathering, so typical for ethnography.
