Men and women, who leave their countries, their families, their education and their work to undertake a journey. Some fleeing war, others terrorism, others poverty; looking for solutions, for themselves or for their loved ones. Some need medical care that they cannot access in their home country.  Each one has their own story and we simply do not know enough about them. Immigrants’ life histories can provide us with a lot of useful information that can help us understand the contemporary phenomenon of migration from pedagogical, sociological and economic points of view. The paths and trajectories of entire communities remain unknown, their needs unheard and the enormous wealth in terms of the relationships, the level of mutual help and the competences is neither brought to light nor properly evaluated. This paper, born of a series of biographical interviews carried out with adult immigrants from countries in West Africa, reflects on the relationship between education, work, and the communities to which the immigrants belong.

The article discusses ethical concerns and hesitations related to different phases of biographical research – interviewing, analysing the interviews and publishing research findings. Drawing on the principles of reflexive methodology, the author explores tensions raised by and in the field, from reconciling the discrepancy between the roles of a researcher and close relative. Biographical interview is perceived as a private experience, whereas the public nature of (academic) writing evokes questions as it presumes examining also the personal relationships developed in the field. Moving from the role of an emphatic listener to that of a determined cultural analyst can be challenging and force the researcher to question the legitimacy of her research activity as she engages in self-protective behaviour. Based on biographical interviews with Soviet era agricultural leaders, the author addresses also the debates over the Soviet legacy in Estonia.

The thematically oriented biographical interview (TOBI) is a research tool used frequently in contemporary qualitative research. Compared to other interviewing techniques, its main advantage is its combination of a thematic focus and sensitivity to the perspective of the interviewee. The authors demonstrate that TOBI is made up of several constituents: first, it is a speech infrastructure (comprising a conversational and a narrative component), and second, it encompasses three kinds of relevance (biographical relevance, identity relevance and specific thematic relevance). The main part of the article is devoted to an analysis of the types and forms of relevance that occur in the corpus of oral history biographical interviews. The analysis shows that, contrary to the common effort of researchers to increase the significance of a respondent’s testimony by emphasising the specific thematic relevance, the biographical and identity relevances are equally important for successfully capturing the actor’s perspective and smoothly conducting a TOBI. In their explication of relevance and its forms the authors draw on the theory of relevance developed by Alfred Schütz.

This paper describes the process of developing the idea for a book that ultimately took the form of a biography. I describe the concept of this book as well as my doubts related to the challenge of combining a scholarly study in the field of history with the literary values of a biography. I refer to the methodology of biographical research applied by sociologists, the experiences of historians working with ego documents, and to the discourse of literary studies scholars. In contrast to those researchers who place biographies on the periphery of these disciplines, I believe that well-written biographies can generate new impulses in the humanities. My notion of a “biography of the middle” found its embodiment in the form of a book titled Życie na pograniczach. Zbigniew Anthony Kruszewski. Biografia (Life in the Borderlands. Zbigniew Anthony Kruszewski. A Biography).

Tekst jest próbą opisu procesu powstawania książki, która ostatecznie przyjęła formę biografii. Mowa w nim o budowaniu koncepcji określającej jej formę i wątpliwościach związanych z wyzwaniem, jakim jest połączenie pracy historycznej, o charakterze naukowym, z walorami literackimi przystępnie napisanej biografii. Zbigniew Anthony Kruszewski. Biografia.
