The article reconstructs selected problems of critical and publicistic discussion around Artur Domosławski’s book Kapuściński non-fiction concerning the status of the biographical narrative, the role and duties of the biographer and the limits of biographical disclosures. The themes discussed in this sketch made it possible to indicate current issues related to workshop deficiencies and duties of the contemporary biographer, including the exposition of issues related to modernity, subjectivity and ethics of biographical undertakings.

Starting from the contemporary trends in biography and referring to findings in the field of anthropology of writing and new materialism, the author analyzes poetic forms created in painting studios. She considers the works of O. Boznańska, W. Weiss and T. Tchórzewski as poetic manifestations of the literary practice of everyday life, a type of poeticised documents. The presence of poetry in artists’ lives is multi-faceted: loose pages preserved in a scrapbook, entries in a journal and autonomous works printed in the press, hence their role in creative biography is different. The common ground is a syncretic perception of creativity; the preserved texts co-create a kind of artistic site where the boundaries between the publication, the exhibition and the project performance blur, requiring special editing operations.

The scope of the study is historiography development in interwar Poland (1918– 1939), in particular, the accumulation of facts and the development of value judgments about the 1863–1864 Uprising on the territory of Belarus. The analysis was conducted on the basis of the Biography Studies and Regional Studies of the Uprising, published during the mentioned period (books, scientific and popular articles in magazines and newspapers). It shows that the area of these studies was actively developing during the interwar twenty years, which resulted in the creation of about 70 publications. However, the Polish historians at that time were not able to overcome political bias, introduce a large number of documentary sources and generally to turn to large-scale integrated scientific researches.

Incomplete archive of Tadeusz Kozanecki, stocked in the University of Warsaw Library and in the Joint Libraries of the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology of the University of Warsaw, the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Philosophical Society, offers an insight into the problems that this historian faced when realising an ambitious plan to edit Maurycy Mochnacki’s “Dzieła wszystkie” (“Complete Works”). Most important is the fact that the endeavour proved too complex to be handled by one researcher without philological competence. This project, initiated in the times of the Polish People’s Republic, encountered serious political obstacles since Mochnacki in his texts expressed negative attitude to the Czarist Russia, took part in the November Uprising, and because he was an émigré that involved into national issues. Thus, attempts to publish all his journalistic articles at that time could not have been successful. It must be stressed that while working on this edition, Kozanecki became the first to reconstruct the genealogy of the Mochnacki family, arrived at numerous biographical details, and pointed to many political aspects of his activity. Archive research and Mochnacki’s life facts reconstruction was a time-consuming activity that hindered completing the edition even in an abridged form. Apart from it, Kozanecki failed to form a competent editorial team to manage this task. The historian’s dispersed documentation clearly demonstrates the problems which the future editor of Mochnacki’s “Complete Works” must face.

The article discusses the most important factors behind transformations in the twentieth-century study of biography, setting as its aim demonstrating the limits on and new paths for biography in relation to three areas: literary practice (working with the examples of Virginia Woolf and Julian Barnes), university pedagogical practice (using the example of the author’s experience), and one of the classic works in the area of the study of biography in Polish literary studies: Maria Jasińska’s 1970 book Zagadnienia biografii literackiej (Problems in Literary Biography), which touches on common ground with the work of Philipp Lejeuene on the biographical “referential pact.” Biography, having been since its inception a hybrid discourse, joining together literariness, a documentary aspect, and a (popular-) scholarly aspect developed in the twentieth century on an unprecedented scale (this tendency is sustained in academic and popular-scientific discourse; the separate genre of biographical reportage also emerged), while the topic also became a focus of interest among modern and postmodern writers who treated the conventions and traditions of biography as pretexts for questions about its philosophical direction.

Professor Jerzy Starnawski (1922–2012) was a historian of literature, bibliographer and author of over one-thousand works published in 1948–2013. The article examines those of Starnawski’s writings that stemmed from his ceaseless interest in books, his constant contact with them and his studies of them during countless houres spent in libraries, even during brief visits to various towns. Starnawski was passionate about finding, documenting, describing and editing, especially previously unknown works, though he also studied remnants of works by Polish authors and information about Poland that disseminated outside the country. On the other hand, Starnawski’s teaching experiences led to the publication of comprehensive works introducing Polish language and literature scholars (and not only them) to bibliography and providing an overview of works dealing with the history of literature. Bibliography and history of book studies were subjects to which he devoted not only a separate publication but also a number of treatises and articles. In addition, he initiated and, to a large extent, edited 10 volumes of the Słownik badaczy literatury polskiej (Dictionary of Polish literature scholars), which is largely a biographical dictionary of book scholars.
