Graphic design in Poland after World War II has not been completely explored so far. This article describes the state of graphic design during the Polish People’s Republic period as well as presents the life and work of Andrzej Heidrich — one of the leading designers of that time. It shows his artistic versatility, which manifests itself in designing such varied works as books, banknotes, bookplates, postage stamps, identity papers and more. The main purpose of this article is to present one of Heidrich’s work aspects — the book design. The conclusions show that Heidrich is the advocateof classic solutions, developed by former printing masters. However, he attempts to modify some elements, making them modern and original.

This paper aims to address and explore the problem of rendering Alasdair Gray’s prose in Polish, by focusing on his works’ extra-narrative elements. It seeks to identify the difficulties and limitations in translating an author of this kind – a writer, but also, and perhaps primarily, an artist, whose texts function as book-objects, relying heavily on artwork as well as typographical experimentation. The analysis, centred on Gray’s Lanark, 1982, Janine and Poor Things, leads to a discussion of the broader question of translating these books in which the actual text is only part of the story.

The aim of the article is not only to point out at low quality of typography of contemporary scientific books published in Poland, but mainly to aware that it generates negative impact on communication value. In that context 400 books published in Poland by bibliologists in last 10 years were analyzed by authors of the article. The conclusions presented in the article were based on the analysis of the semantic quality of covers (semantic relations of text and image). The most typical and repetitive errors (e.g. neutrality, literalism and incompatibility) were shown and described. Last, but not least, it was proven by some of good examples, that working on and achieving the proper quality of communication in cover’s design is possible, despite the costs. The only way to success is to understand the real needs of users and design thinking in books’ design.

Andrzej Tomaszewski is a typographer, pressman, and editor. Over the years, he has designed the artwork of more than 260 books and magazines and is currently regarded one of the major authority figures in the field of typography in Poland. Tomaszewski is also the author of many publications on the subject of practical and theoretical aspects of book design. His definition of “typography” is the one (that has been) most often referred to in Polish specialist literature. In 2015, as the commissioner of the contest named “Konkurs PTWK Najpiękniejsza Książka Roku”, he created and systematised the grading criteria for the entres. Biographical research on careers of some eminent typographers constitues a significant part of bibliology studies. It allows the reader to detect complex aspects of designing publications that would be both functional and beautiful. The aim of this article is to introduce and discuss Tomaszewski’s outlook on defining the meaning of “typography,” typographer’s role, book design, and the concept of a beautiful book.
