The article discusses a portolan atlas, created in Messina in Sicily in 1591, which had until now escaped attention of scholars both in the Czech Republic and abroad. The atlas, containing eight folios and depicting both the well-known navigable areas in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic with North American and Brazilian coastline, is probably only the second extant atlas by this author (the first exemplar is to be found in Madrid). The study includes a cartometric analysis of individual maps (it is thanks to this analysis that we can determine their accuracy) as well as the number of discovered portolans in the Czech Republic.
