Cats have fought their way to human homes, hearts, and to the centre of interest of various fields of science. In the time of buoyantly developing field of animal studies and Athrozoology, cats have been given a chance to be appreciated and understood. Their transition in both real world and virtual reality has been a multi-layered and complex process yet to be completed.

The article presents the attitude towards cats – and more broadly to all animals – in the society of the Second Polish Republic, and seeks to answer the question of whether any considerable evolution in this aspect could be noticed within the twenty years of the state’s existence. It discusses the living conditions of domestic cats, the issue of cruel treatment of these animals, their use as a resource (e.g. in the fur industry). The analysis answers the question of why so many people feared cats and considered them to be dangerous.

Artykuł przedstawia stosunek społeczeństwa II Rzeczypospolitej do kotów, a szerzej – do zwierząt, przede wszystkim zaś próbuje odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy podczas międzywojennego dwudziestolecia nastąpiła w tej kwestii zauważalna zmiana. Ukazuje warunki, w jakich żyły domowe koty, okrucieństwo, jakiego dopuszczano się wobec tych zwierząt, sposoby ich wykorzystywania (np. w przemyśle futrzarskim). Pozwala też odpowiedzieć na pytanie, dlaczego wiele osób obawiało się kotów i uznawało je za zwierzęta groźne.

W artykule omówiono najważniejsze etapy tworzenia kwestionariusza postrzeganych cech osobowości psów i kotów. Narzędzie pomiaru zostało opracowane na podstawie wyników badań eksploracyjnych, w których uczestniczyło 200 właścicieli psów i 200 właścicieli kotów. Przedstawiono właściwości psychometryczne skal, które zostały osobno skonstruowane dla każdego gatunku zwierząt domowych, opracowano wytyczne dotyczące praktycznego zastosowania narzędzia, klucz, a także procedurę przeliczania wyników surowych na wyniki znormalizowane w celu postawienia diagnozy. Prezentowany kwestionariusz może być stosowany zarówno do badań ściśle naukowych, jak i w praktyce weterynaryjnej lub hodowlanej.

The article discusses the most important steps in the development of scales to assess personality traits attributed to dogs and cats. The analysis is based on exploratory study which considered 200 dog owners and 200 cat owners opinions. Paper presents psychometric properties of the personality scales that were developed separately for each species, guidelines for practical application, the key and the procedure for converting the raw scores to the normalized scores for the purpose of diagnosis. The questionnaire can be used both in strictly scientific studies and in a veterinary practice or breeding.
