This study investigated the use of lexical elements of cohesion in the essay writing of students of English as a Second Language. Two hundred essays of final year students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka were collated and analyzed by the researchers in order to identify the lexical elements used to achieve cohesion in writing. The result showed that students used three lexical elements as postulated by Gutwinski in varying degrees in their writings. These include: repetition, synonyms, and lexical sets (collocations). Students tended to use more of repetitions and made minimal use of synonyms and lexical sets to achieve cohesion in writing. This has led to poorly written essays by students. It also implies that lexical cohesion elements should be taught in schools to enable students use them appropriately in writing.

Flipped classroom innovation has attracted the attention of English Language Teaching (ELT) researchers to examine its effectiveness. This inquiry, therefore, elaborates on the effect of flipping (i.e. reversing) individual and collaborative instruction using a WhatsApp application on the cohesive ability of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners as one of the essential elements of writing skills. A quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group and a pre-test/post-test design was implemented to find any significant difference between the two combinations. The first group (N=25) was treated using 5 to 10 minutes of cohesion-based video materials and tasks from the WhatsApp group activities of the group members. Meanwhile, the second group (N=25) was treated similarly using individual WhatsApp activities. The findings reveal that the mean score from the collaborative group at 66.17 is higher than the mean score of individual ones at 50.19 with a level of significance <0.05. This means that teaching the topic of cohesion in writing using a flipped approach instruction model through the WhatsApp group turns out to be more effective than the individual one. The results suggest that teaching cohesion using a flipped approach through collaborative WhatsApp learning activities may serve as one of the suitable alternatives to improve EFL learners’ cohesion in writing.

The aim of the article is to analyse the relationships holding between regional policy and the cohesion conception. Special attention is paid to the role of space in their formulation and transformation. The cohesion conception is connected directly with measures taken under regional policy, whose supreme goal is to intervene in the market mechanism in order to reduce the scale of development disparities. The notion of space in the cohesion conception, especially in terms of its use in regional policy, has been undergoing a significant evolution in recent years. The article discusses the most salient elements of this process.

The article analyzes the means of word-formative motivation in the generation of a text. Text oriented functions of word-formative motivation are caused by the method of its representation in the text either through a word-formative structure of derived words, or by a derivational pair „form – derived”, or by a whole motivating judgment. If derivative motivation in the text is expressed only by a word building structure of a derivative as a carrier of its consequences, then it serves as a source of lexical-semantic construction material with a property of double reference. Word-formative motivation, which is expressed in the text by a word-formative pair „form – derived” or a motivational judgment, serves as a means of implementing connectivity, primarily local. Various methods of textual usage of word-formative motivation serve as a means of creating an artistic image, the formation of a linguistic expression, artistic expression of a text.

The purpose of this article is to identify the actions taken by the EU in order to improve socio-economic cohesion of Europe in the context of their impact on businesses. The authors have attempted to analyze the activity planned and financed in the years 2014–2020 and identified specific areas in enterprise that will receive support in order to reduce disparities. In this discussion have highlighted the role of the system perspective on the development of enterprises, which includes not only support for the factors directly linked with an enterprise but also the development of those that can be identified in the external environment.

Modern concepts of regional development are trying to reconcile apparently confl icted development business – enhancing the capabilities of competitive regions with the prevention of socially and politically unacceptable differences between and within region. Main aim is to present selected theoretical and practical approaches, including the tasks of the regional government, understood as the formation of the cohesion and competitiveness.

Expenditure on structural policy is the second largest item in the European Union’s budget. Structural funds and the cohesion fund are intended for the bloc’s poorest countries and regions, and their aim is to increase the cohesion of the entire community. Under the EU reform treaty, the traditional model of economic and social cohesion would be expanded to include a third dimension-territorial cohesion. The authors analyze the implications of the introduction of territorial cohesion to European structural policy. They evaluate EU program documents and research in this area. Szlachta and Zaleski set out to explain why the territorial dimension of European structural policy is important to Poland and why European cohesion policy should be modified after 2013. The paper describes the theoretical foundations of European structural policy, paying special attention to the role of regional factors for community-level intervention and the course of convergence processes. Against this background, the authors describe the EU’s regional policy and its territorial dimension over the past 20 years. The paper also discusses the most important conclusions from a public debate on territorial issues in Europe, and mentions issues such as the EU Green Paper on territorial cohesion and its importance for reforming the EU’s structural policy after 2013.

Zoya Rezanova & Konstantin Shilyaev. Megametaphor as a coherence and cohesion device in a cycle of literary texts. The Poznań Society for the Advancement of Arts and Sciences, PL ISSN 0079-4740, pp. 31-39 The present study is concerned with the notion of megametaphor and its role in the cohesion and coherence of the text, as well as its intertextual function. We discuss the method of identifying and structuring megametaphor in a literary text and apply it to four novels by Jack London that have dogs as their protagonists. The megametaphor DOG IS A MAN is shown to organize the texts both conceptually - via a coherent set of frame structures of the source domain - and linguistically, by way of applying a network of metaphorical lexemes to the description of a dog.

This paper proposes an innovative approach to the analysis of fiction texts through the combined means of three points of view, viz. FSP, discourse subjects (DSs) and their cohesive chains, and cohesive ties. It explores the theme of metamorphosis of the characters as it appears in all the three examined aspects, and the influence the metamorphosis exerts on them. Three main problems are discussed in the paper. Firstly, it deals with unexpected tokens in the identity chains of the DSs undergoing the metamorphosis and the cohesive ties through which they are incorporated in these cohesive chains. Secondly, it addresses seeming abrupt switches between two thematic progressions which in fact form just one progression. Lastly, the paper discusses the function of the features detected in the texts in relation to the complexity of the idea of metamorphosis.

Emergence in Dynamical Systems

EN
Emergence is a term used in many contexts in current science; it has become fashionable. It has a traditional usage in philosophy that started in 1875 and was expanded by J. S. Mill (earlier, under a different term) and C. D. Broad. It is this form of emergence that I am concerned with here. I distinguish it from uses like ‘computational emergence,’ which can be reduced to combinations of program steps, or its application to merely surprising new features that appear in complex combinations of parts. I will be concerned specifically with ontological emergence that has the logical properties required by Mill and Broad (though there might be some quibbling about the details of their views). I restrict myself to dynamical systems that are embodied in processes. Everything that we can interact with through sensation or action is either dynamical or can be understood in dynamical terms, so this covers all comprehensible forms of emergence in the strong (nonreducible) sense I use. I will give general dynamical conditions that underlie the logical conditions traditionally assigned to emergence in nature. The advantage of this is that, though we cannot test logical conditions directly, we can test dynamical conditions. This gives us an empirical and realistic form of emergence, contrary those who say it is a matter of perspective.

The purpose of this paper is to define delocalization magnitude for cohesion and employment in EU member states. The first part presents general theoretical reflections on the conception of relocation in EU member states. The empirical part of the paper shows directions of delocalization in the EU, and its impact on employment and cohesion. In the results section, it points out that the relocation processes have a varying influence on cohesion, depending on the level of analysis.

This study examines the use of cohesive devices (pragmatic markers and conjunctions) in a 24,000-word corpus of transcribed oral data from 47 learners and native speakers of English. Both of these cohesive devices increase with proficiency level, but not in the same way. Conjunction use seems to increase steadily, and only the differences between the highest and lowest proficiency levels were found to be statistically significant. Pragmatic marker use, however, remains fairly stable across the three lowest proficiency levels and rises drastically for the two highest proficiency levels, and the two higher proficiency levels are significantly different from the two lower levels in their use of pragmatic markers. The results are compared to native speaker rates of cohesive device use for the same tasks and under the same conditions.

Many books designed for international distribution combine text blocks and images. Their layout offers hybrid messages organized on the visual space of a double page. Texts both in the original language and in translation must fit into limited spaces or boxes positioned around illustrations. Thus, translators practice multimodal translation, writing texts that preserve or enhance the cohesion between visual and textual messages. This skill requires some training. Unfortunately, while theoretical writings on pragmatic translation acknowledge its intersemiotic nature, few training programs address this aspect. The creation of a course on multimodal translation would be a valued addition to any translator training program. The concept of a hybrid translation unit offers a way of structuring material to introduce both intersemiotic and multimodal translation in professional curricula. The author draws on her professional experience to discuss the role of illustrations in grasping meaning through practical examples. She suggests generalizable translation strategies to strengthen text-image cohesion, or even generate text from images alone, while adapting the book in translation to its intended readership.

The inspiration to take up the issue of integrated development in the context of the modernization of the village was, on the one hand, the conviction of the urgent need of stimulation, on the other hand, there was a concern that it should not be identified entirely with the integrated management system. Although the idea of integrated development is no longer a novelty, but it still remains a declaration and not translated into effective mechanisms for the functioning of local communities. The need to popularise it further does not require an extensive justification. The essence of the modernisation of rural background, characteristics of the integrated management of development, its place in the future EU policy 2014-2020 and in the new system of integrated planning in Poland, will be presented: rural location in the system of integrated management development, declared in selected strategic documents, the role of smart specialization of regions, the Opolskie voivodeship good practice to stimulate development, recommendations for further actions conducive to integrated development, including modernization of the countryside.

Developmental networks are ego-centered networks, and were found to be beneficial for career success and advancement. Especially in academia, the benefits of developmental networks are critical due to limitations in career stability, and its up-or-out character. Overall, they facilitate career success and advancement by providing access to social capital, which is more or less attainable depending on certain structural network characteristics. Diverging access to social capital for women and men is well known, however, little is known about developmental networks of female and male academic staff. Therefore, this study investigated cohesion and brokerage as indicators for access to social capital to explore gender differences. The sample consisted of n = 594 ego-networks of PhDs and postdocs, working at German universities and research institutes. Cohesion was measured by density and degree; brokerage by effectiveness and constraint. Results revealed that based on Coleman’s cohesion theory (1988, 1990), female researchers showed less access to social capital through less dense networks, but bigger ones implying more social capital. Moreover, based on Burt’s brokerage theory (1992, 2005), female researchers showed, against our assumptions, more brokerage social capital by showing greater effectiveness, and less constraint. Results provide insight into men’s and women’s access to social capital.

The paper is concerned with shifts of cohesion and coherence in several Polish translations of G. K. Chesterton from the point of view of the procedural approach, in which the choice of particular linguistic/textual devices is indicative of the text producer’s intended meaning. As regards cohesion, the paper touches upon lexical cohesion and conjunction. It discusses the eff ects of replacing repetition with variation, and of disambiguating and explicating conjunctions. As for coherence, an analysis is carried out which shows how the translator’s failure to render a polysemous word adequately detracted from the TT’s coherence. Also, an example is given of coherence being affected by polysemy in the TT. The aim of the paper is to find out what kind of issues and regularities connected with cohesion and coherence emerge in the translation process and how these affect target texts.

In this paper, we propose the study of the cohesion in the narrative texts written by B2 and C1 level learners of French as a FL. We will focus on the sentence connectors. We will analyse different parameters such as the frequency and variety of connectors used. We will then focus on some unexpected uses found in the learner corpus Corpus-CFLE. Our aim is to study the students’ narrative productions and their knowledge in the use of specific connector according to the type of the text produced.
