The war novel by Ladislav Ťažký (1960s) represents a non-conformist (deideologised) artistic concept which refuses falsifying of the post-war history typical for the contemporary socialist realism. The novel is focused on two diffe-rent topics – the war and the following period of collectivisation. Ťažký perceives the two as comparable acts of violence as the true nature of collectivisation was not in line with the official ideology. People who had sacrificed so much to make their lives after the war more humane fell victim to it.

The article deals with the communist propaganda, which was supposed to convince the readers of the advantages of productive cooperatives and state agricultural farms during the period of intensive collectivisation of the Polish villages. ‘Głos Szczeciński’ was a newspaper that played a very special role in the communist propaganda in West Pomerania. The Polish community was indoctrinated there through a manipulated image of the reality presented in documentaries, commentaries and reports of the party’s and state’s bodies. The articles published in ‘Głos Szczeciński’ dealt with such problems as the creation of new cooperatives, the completion of production plans, work competition, the role of the party and the fight against the kulaks (Russian: кулáк).

This paper asks why the transformation of the East German agricultural sector did not occur as politically intended: decollectivisation and a change to small family farms did not take place. In order to answer this question the two dominant sociological concepts of transformation, transfer of institutions and delayed modernisation, are first considered. Afterwards the theoretical and methodological approaches and results of socio-agricultural studies are presented. Based on the interpretation of the findings of these studies the main characteristics of the agricultural transformation are identified. The paper ends with the thesis that, as was typical for the German reading of the transformation process was its interpretation within the "order of time". This implied a devaluation and ignorance of whatever was not in line with the concept of modernisation.

The article analyses representations of the experience of changes in ownership in the diaries of Poles ideologically involved in creating production cooperatives in Poland after WWII. The author uses unpublished archival materials from the competition for “New Peasants Diaries” [Nowe pamiętniki chłopów, 1955–1956] and diaries published in the volumes Young Rural Generation of the Polish People’s Republic [„Młode pokolenie wsi Polski Ludowej”, 1963–1967]. The first part of the article focuses on the experiences and hopes associated with the process of creating socialist ownership and tries to answer the question of how cooperative members understood the challenges of the future in the context of socialism. Following this, the article analyses the diaries of rural youth. These narratives describe the process of liquidating the cooperatives and how the idea of production cooperatives existedafter 1956.
