The Human Resources Management industry is feminised and gives women the opportunity to achieve high managerial and expert positions. Female specialists in this field, who are strongly involved in their professional duties, are subject to twofold pressure. On the one hand, they are expected to adjust their working style and time management to the needs of the world of business, governed by the rules of liberalism. On the other hand, they are confronted with traditional expectations concerning family roles. The aim of this article is to present the strategies of combining professional and domestic roles and the ways of coping with the organisation of time and space in a complex life situation by women for whom professional work is an important element of identity and who have a sense of high value of their work. Selected aspects of women’s work are presented on the example of professional biographies obtained from narrative interviews with female informants working in the HR industry. The results of the study indicate three strategies of combining professional and family roles, which can be set on a scale from the most liberal to a mix of traditional and liberal models.

In the course of professional activities undertaken by university teachers, they assume at least four different roles, namely the one of a researcher, teacher, educator, and organizer of academic life. Taking on each of these roles imposes on a university teacher a necessity to possess appropriate abilities and competences that are necessary for the proper performance of assigned duties. The content presented in the article is an attempt to describe and analyse the operation of a university teacher in the above four roles assigned to him or her, which may be in confl ict. Hence, performing these roles, a university teacher often faces the dilemma which of them to give priority to, which of them to consider to be a priority and, at the same time, how not to endanger any other dimension of professional activity with sustaining damage.

The paper is an attempt to present the conflict of roles experienced by womenmothers undertaking academic research and teaching activity, and the difficulty of combining motherhood with their professional role. The problems faced by women who want to fulfil these two roles simultaneously have been signalled in the study. Based on the literature of the subject, including the results of available research, it has been shown that family duties enhance the conflict of roles, and hinder the execution of the professional one. In addition, it has also been shown that motherhood and the performance of the parental role is a factor delaying the development of women’s academic careers. Factors supporting and slowing them down have also been indicated. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the conflict between the roles of a mother and an academic, and to sensitize academia to the difficulties in combining motherhood with the professional activity of women academics.
