The paper presents three main definitions of theoretical entity: basic definition, definition from unobservability, and ontological definition. These are the definitions of theoretical entity that are most popular and widely accepted by philosophers of science (both realists and antirealists). All these definitions contain significant defects, which lead to unacceptable conclusions. The author also offers an alternative definition from explanation, which avoids the defects of previous definitions. The aim of the paper is to prove that proper definition of theoretical entity is necessary in debates over scientific realism. To make a legitimate claim about the existence of theoretical entities, one should know what theoretical entity really is.

The article deals with the scientific and methodological basics of forming linguosociocultural competence as a сomplex and multicomponent phenomenon in the process of teaching reading in English the students of universities who learn English as the target language. The abundance of different definitions of “non-verbal signals” necessitates the analyses of the approaches to defining the notion. Thus the main approaches to defining the notion of “non-verbal signals” have been analyzed. Non-verbal signals have been defined as the meaningful movements of a person, which include gestures, mimics, pantomimics, changes of personal space, distance, particularities of voice and its modulations and such specific static details as clothing, hairdo styles, accessories, jewelry, tattoos, the smell of a person, etc. The basic criteria of non-verbal signals classification have been singled out. The typologies of non-verbal signals have been introduced. Among them are 1) the typology which is suggested in accordance to the physical nature of producing the non-verbal signals and 2) the typology which is suggested in accordance to the meaning of non-verbal signals. The typology which is based upon physical nature of producing of non-verbal signals includes body language, distance and physical appearance, voice, touch, the use of time, eye contact and the actions of looking while talking and listening, frequency of glances, patterns of fixation, pupil dilation, and blink rate. The typology which is based upon the meaning of non-verbal signals accounts that context non-verbal signals are found within (standard non-verbal signals and situational non-verbal signals) and the degree of universality of their meaning (universal, national-biased, individual/author’s non-verbal signals). The methodological typology of non-verbal signals in forming linguosociocultural competence in the process of reading in English, which embraces and accounts the difficulties of forming of linguocultural competence connected with the interpreting and understanding non-verbal signals has been specified. Thus the difficulties of forming of linguocultural competence connected with the interpreting and understanding non-verbal signals are influenced by the abundance of various types of non-verbal signals, their specific universal/nationally-biased/individual meaning, and also their contextual meaning.

The article is devoted to the definition and justification of the criteria and indicators for sustainable future formation of professional law enforcement officers. The definition of the concept of «professional reliability» is given. The requirements to the selection criteria are proposed by different scientists. The requirements that must meet the criteria are highlighted; the relationship of criteria and indicators of professional reliability is shown. The criteria and indicators of formation of professional reliability are based on the analysis of the criteria and indicators that are close to the essence of such things as professional competence, professional competence and professional readiness of future police officers for professional work. Based on the opinions of the experts evaluation of the criteria of formation of professional reliability of future police officers are allocated. On the base of analysis the author identified motivation, knowledge-operational, personal and regulatory criteria for formation of professional reliability. The characteristics of each criterion of professional reliability, the identification of the indicators and levels of its formation are proposed. The indicators of student-regulatory criteria are the following professionally important personal characteristics such as mental stability, responsibility, discipline, commitment, perseverance, poise, self-confidence, self-esteem and self-control. The indicators of motivational criteria characterize the nature of the formation of future specialist to the profession of a policeman, the presence of a conscious desire for faithful implementation of professional activity and form the motives and needs of professional activities, the facilities responsible for its implementation, compliance with the law. Knowledge of the operational parameters of criteria is presented by professional knowledge, professional skills of professional activity (special tactical, psychological and vocational special), the level of physical fitness, weapons possession. Each of these indicators has three levels: high, medium and low. The noted criteria and indicators of forming of professional reliability of the future police officers of internal affairs are based on fundamental principles of systematic and structural approaches and divided into three conditional groups: criteria and indicators of the terms, process and effectiveness which enables to analyze forming of professional reliability of the police officers of internal affairs simultaneously as to the process and result.

Możliwość weryfikacji wywiązywania się pracowników z ich obowiązków służbowych stanowi jedno z uprawnień pracodawcy. W odniesieniu do pracodawcy samorządowego okresowa ocena jakości pracy podwładnych to także obowiązek pracodawcy. Artykuł przedstawia analizę współczesnych rozwiązań w zakresie oceny pracowników samorządowych. Wskazuje na podstawy prawne tych działań, podmiotowy i przedmiotowy zakres oceny oraz procedury związane z jej realizacją. Ostatnia część artykułu zawiera przemyślenia i wnioski autora na temat uregulowań w omawianym zakresie.

One of the employer’s right is the possibility of the verification if employees fulfil their official duties. Periodical opinion of the quality of employee’s work with reference to self - government employer is also the employer’s duty. The article shows the current analysis of solutions in the range of the opinion of the self – government employees. It shows the right bases these activities, subjective and objective range opinions and procedures connected with its realization. The last part of the article contains the author’s reflections and conclusions about the regulation in the discussed range.

The article presents spiritual guidance, startchestvo in the Eastern Churches. On the basis of two sayings of the Desert Fathers the author carried out a moral analysis of two spiritual starets’ behavior. Based on this analysis behavioral and moral norms were determined which regulated starets’ activities. We presented problems which can be observed in spiritual guidance when a starets violates the norms in relation to his supervisees. We pointed out that this violation in pastoral ministry can be caused by the phenomenon called “mock startchestvo”.

The article describes the early years of cycle racing in the Opolskie, primarily the history of the post-war Zarzewie Prudnik People’s Sports Club. The origins and the efforts of the local clubs to promote this discipline in the difficult post-war period are outlined. From the very beginning of their existence, the enthusiasm and resourcefulness of sports activists, the majority of whom became involved as volunteers in all initiatives aimed at the promotion of cycle racing in the area of Prudnik and the whole Opolskie region deserves appreciation. The very fact that from the very beginning special attention was given to the youth, which later translated into very good results of juniors and seniors, is of special importance. Black and white photos supplement lists of keen activists, committed athletes and their scores to commemorate the contribution of the local clubs to the greatest achievements in the history of road cycling in Poland.

The article is devoted to the problem of evaluation of the higher school teacher’s readiness to the managerial activity. It is emphasized that the intensive changes of the pedagogic systems and processes, the variability of curricula and educational technologies, the development of information and communication environment require a high level of readiness of the higher school teachers to managerial activity. In modern conditions, special importance is paid to training high school teachers of the new generation. Managerial competence as a component of teacher professionalism in modern high school provides the ability to think critically, make decisions, the ability to adapt to the dynamic conditions of life, optimize resources for the realization of personal qualities and abilities of the student, the organization his motivated creative activity. It is proved that formation of the managerial competence of the higher school teacher in the process of his professional activity requires the selection of parameters, criteria and indicators for the analysis, evaluation of the flow of the investigated process, the rationale for its development and definition of the level of the managerial competence components formation of the higher education institution teacher. Based on the qualimetrical approach that allows measuring qualitative characteristics by means of quantitative measure the card of qualimetrical evaluation of the level of the higher school teacher’s managerial competence formation is developed. The requirements for determining criteria apparatus for measuring the level of the higher school teacher’s managerial competence formation are highlighted. The following criteria of the higher education institution teacher’s managerial competence formation are offered: position-valuable, cognitive-operational, analytical and reflective. Productive, adequate and basic levels of the higher school teacher’s managerial competence formation are outlined. The present study does not exhaust all aspects of the problem and shows the need for further work in promising areas such as the search for the optimal qualitative measurement model of formation of managerial competence of teacher of high school in the system the relevant criteria, parameters and indicators; learning from the experiences of methods of assessment of formation of managerial competence of the teacher of high school in foreign countries.

Objectives The term metabolic syndrome (MetS) refers to the coexistence of interlinked risk factors of metabolic origin, contributing to the development of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular diseases as well as type 2 diabetes and their cardiovascular complications. The aim of the study is the assessment of the prevalence of MetS among paramedics of the Świętokrzyskie Center of Emergency Medical Services, depending on the adopted diagnostic criteria. Material and Methods The study included 140 paramedics (2 women and 138 men), aged 23–60 years old (median = 43 years, average age = 41.5 years, standard deviation = 10.8 years). The age distribution of the subjects was significantly different from the normal distribution (p-value < 0.0001). The oldest age group (50 years old and above) was overrepresented by nearly a half compared to the youngest group (up to 29 years old). Metabolic syndrome was defined on the basis of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria from 2005 and IDF in agreement with the American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (AHA/NHLBI) from 2009. Results According to the IDF/2005 criteria, in which the necessary condition is the diagnosis of central obesity, MetS was recorded in 26.4% of the subjects (37 people). This is statistically significantly less often than the IDF/AHA/NHLBI/2009 definition of p = 0.001 – 35%. The frequency of the MetS occurrence was statistically significantly related to the age of the subjects and the age groups. Conclusions The prevalence of the MetS in the subject group is evaluated to be significant. The prevalence of MetS is diversified by the applied diagnostic criteria with age being the factor increasing its frequency. The most common factor influencing the prevalence of MetS is blood pressure and waist circumference. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2018;31(6):741–751

Artykuł podejmuje problem rozpoznania i krytycznego rozważenia antecedencji fallibilizmu w filozofii Karneadesa. Warto zwrócić uwagę na fakt, że fallibilizm jest stanowiskiem, którego charakterystyka nie jest jednoznaczna. W pierwszej zatem kolejności należy wyodrębnić rdzeń znaczeniowy tej doktryny (przede wszystkim zarówno wymiar negatywny, jak i pozytywny), aby się nim posługiwać w rozważaniach historyczno-filozoficznych. Intencją artykułu nie jest próba dowodzenia, że Karneades był fallibilistą przed Peircem i Popperem, czy też że był on prekursorem tego stanowiska. Zasadniczy cel rozważań koncentruje się na krytycznym przeglądzie argumentów dotyczących fallibilistycznego odczytania jego poglądów. W tym celu odróżniony zostanie fallibilizm globalny i fallibilizm lokalny, a także omówione zostanie stanowisko eudajmonologicznego fallibilizmu. Tym samym rozważania podjęte w tym artykule mieścić się będą w obrębie ożywionej obecnie dyskusji nad historycznymi źródłami fallibilizmu.

In this article, I undertake an attempt at recognizing and critically analyzing antecedents of fallibilism in the philosophy of Carneades. Because descriptions of fallibilism are somewhat ambiguous, it is imperative that we first determine the semantic root of this doctrine (both in its negative and positive dimensions) before discussing it in historical and philosophical reflections. The main goal of this article is not to prove that Carneades was a fallibilist before Peirce and Popper, or that he was a precursor of this position; rather, the aim is to critically review arguments for and against fallibilistic interpretations of Carneades’ views. To this end, I introduce a distinction between global and local fallibilism, as well as discuss the position of eudaimonological fallibilism. The reflections contained in this article fit with the current lively debate on the historical roots of fallibilism.

W artykule zarysowana została istota badań dotyczących ekonomicznych aspektów gospodarowania przestrzenią miast i regionów. W rozważaniach koncentrowano się głównie na zagadnieniach wartościowani przestrzeni. Po przedstawieniu wyjaśnień terminologicznych związanych głównie z istotą przestrzeni oraz jej wartościowaniem omówione zostały różne konfiguracje czynników determinujących potencjalną wartość przestrzeni. Istotną część artykułu stanowią rozważania dotyczące podejścia metodycznego do wartościowania przestrzeni. Zaprezentowane zostały schematy obrazujące ogólne ścieżki postępowania w tym względzie.
