The article is an overview of the achievements of Polish stylistics and text studies in public discourse studies. In part one the author examines transformations of linguistic schools related to the evolution of discourse schools (from discourse analysis to critical discourse analysis), which occurred as a result of the borrowing of research concepts of the humanities and social sciences devoted to the analysis of language in social, media and political communication, as well as the impact of linguistics on the evolution of discourse analysis in these disciplines (e.g. sociology). In part two the author provides a synthesis of studies concerning Polish public discourse as well as an outline of the research field and a synthesis of research terminology.

The paper explores various narrative and rhetorical strategies for expressing power relationships in the Slovenian translation of Amitav Ghosh’s novel “The Hungry Tide”. Based on critical discourse analysis and the model of micro- and macrostructural shifts developed by van Leuven-Zwart, the paper provides a classification of the aforementioned strategies based on a pilot study of the source text and its translation into Slovenian. Illustrating the strategies with chosen examples, the paper then discusses the solutions adopted by the translator, focusing on general issues concerning the cultural transfer of relationships characterized by inequality in terms of social power.

This paper examines a participative approach of a simultaneous interpreter in the Critical Analysis of Political Discourse. It describes two examples of Polish and Spanish MEPs’ interventions about tobacco production in the EU in a debate that took place during a meeting of the Committee of Agriculture and Rural Development in the European Parliament. The analysis of the discourse indicates the mechanism of identification of discursive categories possible in both languages, which can be crucial for an interpreter in transmitting the contextualised message into another language. These categories can be a tool to improve interpreting of different contextual characteristics in the multicultural and multilingual political debate.

A case study of a given practice within the higher education system serves here as an illustration of the author’s reflection on interrelations between sociological theory and research practice of critical discourse analysis, conceived as the incorporation of theory into research. The empirical results demonstrate the tendency of bifurcation of symbolic power – its deregulatory and overregulatory manifestations in the discourse of the higher education system in Poland. The empirical evidence contributes to a theoretical reflection on contemporary society. These overlapping deregulatory and overregulatory tendencies also exist at the level of whole society, which is interpreted here as a communication system with a number of subsystems, such as economy, politics, education.

The paper gives an ironic and short, both empirical and normative analysis of current Polish home education intertwined with a metaanalysis of the role of metaphors in the language of the educational sciences. Entomological metaphor of subimago helps here in revealing the social status quo of the mentioned „home education” in Poland. One can describe socioeducational reality using different forms of expression. Metaphorization is one of them, not always adequate, but indispensable as well as cognitively pleasant.

The topic of discussion is the discourse that shapes around pregnancy and childbirth in the past about two hundred years in Western countries – the mechanisms of its development, the most important manifestations and possible consequences. Theoretical basis for this problem is – Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), and the main inspiration was the concept of M. Foucault – how according to the author this discourse is constructed, imposed and reproduced. „(...) in every society the production of discourse is at once controlled, selected, organized and subjected to redistribution by a number of procedures, whose role is to (...) take over the randomness of events (...)” writes Foucault. The purpose of the following discussion is, therefore, an attempt to show these „procedures” – methods and measures that are imposing and strengthen the medical discourse on pregnancy, childbirth, and more broadly the female body.

Migrants from Poland in Germany belong to the second largest group of immigrants in Germany. Against this background, the question arises as to their presence in the German public sphere. The article deals with the discourse-critical analysis of the press texts (5 titles: “Suddeutsche Zeitung”, “Die Welt”, “Berliner Zeitung”, “General Anzeiger” as well as “Sachsische Zeitung”, altogether four volumes: 2006, 2011, 2013 and 2016). In the course of the analysis carried out, the following questions, among others, were asked: into which concepts of cultural processes does the reporting on migrants from Poland in Germany in the context of culture inscribe itself; how are they constructed discursively; which discursive strategies and which aspects of cultural and migration policy do they reveal? The article presents the central results of the analysis and discusses the selected visible and invisible logics of the German press discourse in the context of migration and culture.

Language and the law. Controversies and manipulation in Ukrainian parliamentary discourseThis article presents the linguistic resources which Ukrainian parliament members use to form the controversial communiqués. I try to find out what characteristic phrases indicate manipulation of information. Examples are selected from speeches of different political groups of the seventh convocation in the Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada) on 4th July 2012, when the deputies were discussing the Principles of the State Language Policy Act, passed the previous day. To describe the issue in question, I use the method of critical discourse analysis. Język i prawo. W analizie zastosowano metodę krytycznej analizy dyskursu.

The objective of the article is a preliminary attempt to view contemporary forms of recording and documenting the memory of urban space, i.e. urban digital social archives. These undertakings, fitting into the current research trend on urban dis- course, deserve a discursive description with a focus on the subjective, ideational and interactive plane. The author chose only a small fragment from this extensive research field. She looks at the “memory map of the city” recorded in the form of a social archive. She is interested in which elements (objects) places its inhabitants use to build such a map, and what determines their choices in the context of axi- ological preferences.

The author uses Critical Discourse Analysis to compare two legal documents of critical relevance for the rights of children in conflict with the law in Argentina: the current law no. 22,278, called Régimen Penal de la Minoridad, and the project named Sistema de Responsabilidad Penal Juvenil which was under consideration by the National Congress during 2019. This project was proposed by the government so as to stablish a new juvenile justice system in Argentina, following a widely spread tendency in the Latin American region. The purpose of the article is to show that, even though the language of human rights is used in official discourse and in the legal text submitted to Parliament, many of its features represent a clear backlash to a more conservative regime.

The study points out the difference between literary science code and school politics code, manifested especially within a topic of literary education problems. It observes a relation between a simplified model of human being as “homo oeconomicus“ (econ) and models in several human sciences including behavioural economy. The study contains a case study of a group of literary actions as “operations“ with text of “econ fairy tales“. The “econ fairy tale” is described as a new variant of a fairy tale genre. Methodological base of the study is empirical literary science and critical discourse analysis.

The paper describes the text linguistic research of political texts in the field of Translation Studies and presents an overview of critical discourse analysis-based studies. First, the relationship between text, power and ideology and its implications on the role of translation are explored. This is followed by a review of a number of studies on the translation of political texts and on the power relations involved. The paper classifies such studies into the following six categories representing distinct research fields: translators' professional roles and politics; translators acting as mediators in situations of political conflict; translators' professional responsibilities and the strategies they apply; the inference of translators' own historical, social and cultural backgrounds; manipulation in the translation of literary texts and other text types; and critical discourse awareness in Translation Studies. The most recent studies in the above research fields and their results are also presented. It is concluded that these approaches exhibit quite varied research methods and their results are almost impossible to compare. With a view to the future development of this research field, it seems expedient to introduce a unified research theory, method and tool.

The purpose of this case study is to investigate the identity linguistically and cognitively presented by official Target Corporation’s discourse and to unveil any structures or elements that are prominent enough to be included in the employees’ discourse production. The assumption is that the particular language we speak and the structures we choose in various contexts predispose us to think and act in certain ways. As for the approach utilized in this research, it is rather data-driven than data-based. Methods of Critical Discourse Analysis (Wodak and Meyer 2001) are employed and they are supplemented by Critical Metaphor Analysis (Charteris-Black 2005). The sampling of the customers was opportunistic. The identity in and around organization can be effectively investigated through linguistic methods. The study has shown that the vision of the company’s identity is more integrated by the executives and team leaders than grassroots employees. The paper draws attention to the very basic level of communication and its potential of imposing certain conceptualizations – the actual building blocks of any narrative. Moreover, the methodology employed goes beyond mere content analysis and applies rigorous linguistic analysis of company discourse.

The aim of this study is to describe the stylistic features of Internet-mediated political discourse, basing on two samples of hypertextual materials authored by organizations promoting (Kongres Kobiet the Congres of Women, abbr. KK) and criticizing (Antyparytety - Antiparity, abbr. AP) the Polish gender parity initiative of 2009/2010. Firstly, the notion of rhetorical style is introduced in the context of political discourse analysis. Accordingly, rhetorical styles are understood here broadly as emergent properties of texts characterized by clusters of linguistic devices used strategically for persuasive purposes. Next, the methodological framework for the ensuing stylistic analysis is delineated and the “critical” angle of the present study is elucidated. In the course of analysis of two samples of texts (KK - approx. 2080 words; AP approx 1930 words) representing antagonistic positions in the gender parity debate, it is demonstrated that there are more similarities than differences between their rhetorical styles. By focusing on the interrogation of such categories as generic frames, strategies of addressing the reader and pervasive rhetorical figures, it has been shown that both styles exemplify a high degree of saturation with persuasion-oriented linguistic devices. This makes both analyzed styles to some extent manipulative, since they tend to efface rational argumentation for the sake of appeals to emotions and employ some classic propagandists tricks (e.g. glittering generalities, stereotyping, simplification or testimonials). Yet, it seems that the opponents of the gender parity initiative (AP) rely on such devices more heavily, as their texts are mainly oriented towards discrediting the project by arising readers’ doubt and anxiety. The proponents (KK), after all, must also inform the readers about the details of their initiative and present sound reasons why it should be embraced. That is why the rhetorical style emerging in AP corpus seems to be shaped primarily by linguistic devices of pathos, while the rhetorical style of KK’s texts relies on logos and ethos.

According to the World Health Organization, older people and people with preexisting medical conditions appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the COVID-19 virus (World Health Organization 2020). A few journalists (Arielle 2020, Held 2020) have pointed out that in light of the current COVID-19 crisis, vulnerable populations such as elderly people, people with disabilities, and people with preexisting medical conditions have been talked about as if they were “disposable” or “expendable”. Therefore, this study will attempt to examine how vulnerable populations are perceived by Polish public in the context of the global COVID-19 pandemy. In order to achieve that, I will analyze, by the means of critical discourse analysis, comment sections below online articles and editorials covering the topic of the COVID-19 virus on the popular Polish portal Gazeta.pl. In order to narrow down the scope of this study I will only focus on those articles and comments that were published in the week following March 4th 2020 when the first COVID-19 case in Poland was officially confirmed. I believe that this preliminary study will provide useful data for assessing public attitudes toward vulnerable people in times of crisis.

The American president, Barack Obama, is considered to be one of the most charismatic figures of the 21st century. His speeches are the best asset through which he emphasizes this quality. Although, he hasn’t always been considered to be a successful politician, he made his entrance on the political arena in 2004, when he delivered one of his best speeches. The aim of this paper is to reveal the most important elements of a political discourse that can contribute to creating a good image of a political actor. Using the critical discourse analysis method, we are trying to see if there is a connection between a good, coherent discourse strategy and the charisma of the American leader. The sample will include his 2004 speech, delivered at the Democrats’ Convention, the speech that put him in the eyes of the media as a future American leader

The aim of this paper is to analyse the infant prodigy discourse in popular Polish internet portals for parents. As a result of Critical Discourse Analysis, key rhetoric strategies, constructing the representation of a child and its family, have been identified. Subsequently, the analysis of particular discursive strategies, including professionalization of parenthood and discursive construction of a family as an entrepreneur of the self, have been conducted.

Aim. The aim of the research is to examine how Mainland China and Chinese people are represented in the visual materials of four sets of Liberal Studies (LS) textbooks in Hong Kong. Methods. Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, viewing language as a social practice and van Dijk’s ideological coding categories are integrated to analyze discursive representations (e.g., the embedded hidden power) in the Hong Kong Today volumes published by four influential commercial publishers: Modern, Ming Pao, Marshall, and Aristo. Results. The analysis reveals that China and mainland Chinese are negatively portrayed in visual images in four commercial LS textbooks, in which, the representations concerning mainland China and mainlanders are all found ideologically biased to highlight their negative characteristics and alienness. Conclusions. Via an overview of Hong Kong’s history, economy, educational policies, and controversial political events, the reasons why China and its people are represented negatively in LS textbooks is explained.

Bullfighting is increasingly seen as a contested practice in Portugal. The Portuguese public generally disapproves of the practice and the Portuguese animal rights movement has dedicated a significant number of their campaigns to protesting against it. Despite this opposition to the practice, however, there is still legal protection of the practice on grounds of preserving it as a national tradition. This contestation and legality has led bullfighting supporters to actively try to defend and rationalize the practice. This paper analyses this defence and rationalization by exploring a case study of the quasi-lobbyist Portuguese organization, Prótoiro. The aforementioned case study is analyzed through the use of critical discourse analysis and neutralization theory. The conclusion reached in this article is that the analysis of speech reveals that Prótoiro and its supporters try to morally disengage with the harm done to the bull by using justifications that bullfighting is an ethical activity.

The present paper explores the current nexus between Cognitive Linguistics (CL) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), focusing on theories of conceptual positioning, distancing and perspective-taking in discourse space. It assesses the strengths, limitations, and prospects for further operationalization of positioning as a valid methodology in CDA, and political discourse studies in particular. In the first part, I review the cognitive models of positioning that have made the most significant contribution to CDA. Discussing Deictic Space Theory and Text World Theory, among others, I argue that these models reveal further theoretical potential which has not been exploited yet. While they offer a comprehensive and plausible account of how representations and ideologically charged worldviews are established, they fail to deliver a pragmatic explanation of how addressees are made to establish a worldview, in the service of speaker’s goals. The second part of the paper outlines Proximization Theory, a discursive model of crisis and conflict construction in political discourse. I argue that, unlike the other models, it fully captures the complex geopolitical and ideological positioning in political discourse space, providing a viable handle on the dynamics of conflict between the opposing ideologies of the space.
