The study of fallacies is at the heart of argumentation studies. In response to Hamblin’s devastating critique of the state of the theory of fallacies in 1970, both formal dialectical and informal approaches to fallacies developed. In the current paper, we focus on an influential informal approach to fallacies, part of the pragma-dialectical theory of argumentation. Central to the pragma-dialectical method for analysing and evaluating argumentative discourse is the ideal model of a critical discussion. In this discussion model, a dialectical perspective on argumentation is combined with a pragmatic take on communicative interaction. By formalising and computationally implementing the model of a critical discussion, we take a first step in the development of software to computationally model argumentative dialogue in which fallacies are prohibited along the pragmadialectical norms. We do this by defining the Critical Discussion Game, a formal dialogue game based on the pragma-dialectical discussion model, executable on an online user-interface which is part of a larger infrastructure of argumentation software.

W artykule rozważany jest problem reguł metodologicznych z punktu widzenia rozróżnienia przez Jürgena Habermasa działań strategicznych i komunikacyjnych. Główne stawiane w tekście pytanie dotyczy nie treści czy prawomocności reguł, a statusu reguł jako aktów językowych. Dowodzę, iż filozoficzne ujęcia rozwoju nauki od Poppera do Laudana utożsamiają reguły z imperatywami, które według teorii działania komunikacyjnego są perlokucjami i jako takie są przeciwstawione aktom komunikacyjnym. Podstawowy problem z perlokucjami polega na tym, że ich stosowanie uniemożliwia prawdziwie krytyczną dyskusję i na dłuższą metę jest nieefektywne poznawczo. Jak argumentuję, reguły metodologiczne powinny być traktowane jako regulatywne akty mowy, których funkcja polega na koordynowaniu interakcji pomiędzy indywidualnymi badaczami oraz grupami badawczymi, natomiast na bardziej ogólnym poziomie, na organizowaniu zachowań badaczy w realizacji wartości poznawczych.

In the paper, the problem of methodological rules is revisited in the light of a distinction between strategic and communicative action as proposed by Jürgen Habermas. The main question concerns the content of rules or their justification, but touches on the fundamental issue of the status of the rules as speech acts. It is demonstrated that philosophical conceptions of the progress of science from Popper to Laudan tend to equate the rules with imperatives, which, according to the concept of communicative action, pertain to perlocutions as opposed to communicative acts. The main difficulty that ensues is that the use of perlocutions prevents a genuinely critical discussion instead of promoting it, and, in the long run, is simply cognitively ineffective. As I argue, methodological rules are better construed as regulative speech acts, whose function is to coordinate interactions within and among research communities and, at a more general level, to regulate behaviors of individual researchers and research groups as far as they are subordinated to the realization of cognitive values.

W latach 2011–2016 ukazało się sporo publikacji poświęconych Janowi Heweliuszowi. Z okazji czterechsetnej rocznicy jego urodzin, obchodzonych w 2011 r., zostały opublikowane cztery książki zbierające pokłosie konferencji i prelekcji, z dużym udziałem autorów zagranicznych, przedstawiających różne aspekty działalności i osiągnięć gdańskiego astronoma. W 2014 r. zainicjowano edycję korespondencji Heweliusza tomem Prologomenów. Artykuł omawia krytycznie wspomniane publikacje, wskazując ich zalety i braki. Wstępne studium tomu Prologomena Chantal Grell ukazało się także w tłumaczeniu na język polski jako osobna książka. Autorka dokładniej niż jej poprzednicy przedstawiła lata studiów Heweliusza i sieć jego korespondentów, zbytni nacisk kładąc jednak na polemiki z uczonymi francuskimi i angielskimi. Jej końcowa konkluzja, kwalifikująca Heweliusza jako amatora odizolowanego od głównych prądów w nauce XVII w., jest sprzeczna z wymową jego korespondencji, która będzie publikowana przez następne lata.

A number of publications devoted to Jan Heweliusz have been published between 2011 and 2016. On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of his birthday celebrated in 2011, four books have been published gathering the conferences and lectures, with a great deal of foreign authors presenting various aspects of the Gdańsk astronomer’s activities and achievements. In 2014, the publishing of Hevelius’s correspondence was initiated with the volume Prologomena. This article critically discusses the mentioned publications, pointing out their advantages and shortcomings. The preliminary study of the volume by Chantal Grell was also published in a Polish translation as a separate book. The author has indeed – more precisely than her predecessors – presented the years of Hevelius’s studies and the network of his correspondents, however overly emphasized his polemics with the French and English scholars. Her final conclusion, qualifying Hevelius as an amateur isolated from the leading currents of the seventeenth century, is contradictory to the evidence of his correspondence, which will be published over the next years.
