In the Late Neolithic, the area of today’s northeast Poland was a frontier of two different socioeconomic and belief systems, one represented by societies based on a food-producer economy, the other by hunter-gatherer groups. They were involved in processes which led to the emergence of many local syncretic societies, the majority of which complied with the conventions of the para-Neolithic communities. This foundation, already complex in the Late Neolithic, was further differentiated as a consequence of the influence of the Bell Beaker and Iwno cultures. As a result, the multivector processes that transpired between various societies at the time led to the formation of a new phenomenon in north-eastern Poland. It was characteristic for the Early Bronze Age and was called the Trzciniec culture, which was part of a much broader cultural convention known as the Trzciniec cultural circle. Due to the nature of the discoveries from this area, the phenomenon is best reflected in pottery, examples of which can be perceived not only in terms of utilitarian products but mainly as markers of contacts and evidence for diffusion.

The article harks back to the publication entitled “The Motif of the Angel(s) of Death in Islamic Foundational Sources” (VV 38/2 [2020]), which was devoted to the analysis of the eponymous theme in the foundational sources of Islam: the Quran and the sunna of the Prophet Muhammad. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the motif of angel(s) may have been borrowed from two monotheistic traditions that came before. The verification of the thesis that the motif of the angel(s) of death underwent diffusion was carried out in several steps. First, the motif was identified in the textual traditions of Judaism and early Christianity (i.e. sets of texts that were known and, in all likelihood, widespread in the Middle East during the formative period of Islam). As a result of the analysis, most of the themes recognised in the foundational texts of Islam were found. The next step was to identify possible routes of their transmission and percolation into the Islamic tradition and to determine the “ideological demand” for the motif of the angel(s) of death in the burgeoning Islam. Although Jewish and Christian imagery and beliefs about angels are an important (if not the primary) source of influence on Muslim angelology, there was most likely a two-way interaction between the monotheistic traditions, albeit to a limited extent.

The method used in the analyses presented below was focussed interview (FGI) conducted for the purpose of qualitative research carried out within the project: "Cross-border Centre for Supporting the Labour Market", micro-project: "ABC of studying and working in Poland". The main question that the study attempts to answer is whether Ukrainian and Belarusian students perceive their own position in the Polish university and its immediate surroundings and whether there is cultural diffusion between Polish and foreign students. Foreign students generally rate their own university positively. The relations between the studied students and their Polish colleagues are quite correct. In general, foreign students do not feel discriminated against by Polish students. However, a certain difficulty in these positive relations is the problem of keeping both Polish and Ukrainian students in separate national groups. This division is assessed negatively by foreign students as it makes it difficult to learn Polish. Relations with people from outside the university were rated relatively better or as good by respondents as with colleagues from the university. Low frequency of interactions between students from Ukraine and Belarus and Poles makes cultural diffusion difficult.
