The aim of this paper is to conduct a comparative analysis of two culture codes, semantic  and  asemantico-asyntactic,  as  tools  for  ordering  reality  and  discovering  the  meaning  of events. Belinsky and Gogol’s lives and their mutual relations are the subject of our research. The antinomy, and even irreconcilability of codes is observed in concepts of the human and the world. According to the semantic code which was used by Gogol, a person is a part and, at the same time, a reflection of God’s order, and  the world is dichotomic (sacral – sinful, meaningful – meaningless, spiritual – material); it is an area for the fight between good and evil. Belinski, in turn, following the asemantico-asyntactic code, put the human at the centre of the rational world. At the beginning of the 40’s, when Belinsky could still interpret Gogol’s  writings  within  the  frameworks  of  asyntactico-asemantic  culture  code,  he  regarded himself as similar to Gogol. The split occurred after the book Chosen pieces of a correspondence  with  friends  was  published.  The  tragedy  of  not  being understood, which  both  great Russian thinkers faced, was evidence for the existence of two separate sign and  meaning systems within one culture. It must be added that the systems developed against the background of state order, which was coded by the syntactic culture code. Further research needs to be conducted in this field.

The paper focuses on reflection of the First World War in presidential speeches in years 1990–2013. This period delimits mandates of former Czech presidents Václav Havel and Václav Klaus. Ways in which both presidents referred to the historical event and in which they utilized its interpretation for legitimization of their political goals are compared. As its theoretical framework, the study utilizes an approach that has been developed by Jeffrey Alexander and Philip Smith as part of their program in cultural sociology. The study aims to identify the most significant cultural codes and narrative strategies of the analyzed speeches and to relate them to (supra)nationalistic metanarratives that they help to maintain. The study also points to the fact that presidential speeches represent an important case of utilization of past for the purposes of legitimization of state policy while also being a practice with which states are established.

This article focuses on narratives of drought in Czech media discourses. Proceeding from the perspective of cultural sociology, it describes drought as a complex cultural field and a collective representation that has given rise to new forms of civic responsibility and subjectivity and a rich tableau of new uncertainties and risks. Based on an analysis of 4632 articles published in the most widely read Czech newspapers (Lidové noviny, Hospodářské noviny, MF Dnes, Právo, Blesk) between 2014 and 2018, the article identifies the key media images of drought and relates them to broader environmental discourses and cultural risk patterns. The main thesis of the article is that the key tension in the current debate on global climate change is a dispute not between supporters and deniers of climate change, but between climate fatalism and administrative-expert rationality. The article shows that the environmental crisis is closely linked to and negotiated and discussed in connection with the crisis of administrative and expert institutions. A good illustration of the cultural aspects of the current drought debate in the Czech Republic is the link between the social and natural aspects of environmental problems and the different imaginations of both nature and society.

Wychodząc z założenia, że literatura jest ważnym elementem kultury oraz wpływa na tworzące się w naszym kręgu cywilizacyjnym kody kulturowe, Autorka formułuje zalecenia do pracy z tekstem literackim na poziomie uniwersyteckim oraz postuluje wprowadzenie ogólnych kursów literackich na wszystkich szczeblach i kierunkach kształcenia uniwersyteckiego.

This paper addresses the issue of teaching literature and reading comprehension at a university level. The underlying assumption is that the knowledge of certain literary works is crucial in modern higher education since it translates into larger civic engagement. Furthermore, a thorough knowledge of texts of enduring significance has far-fetched implications for those who want to participate in modern culture. The paper examines the importance of reading and puts forward some suggestions and ideas for teaching a non-specialist university literary course.
