Ferdinand de Saussure died 100 years ago (22. 2. 1913) leaving a memorable legacy of primary importance for modern linguistics. This brief review outlines his life, family, studies and cultural background in his native Geneva that were formative for his career and then offers a short account of his major thoughts that have largely shaped the course of modern linguistics. The notes are related thematically to the nature of language and linguistics in the human community, moving to the language system (langue) and text (parole). Some of his important observations are included at the end together with an extensive list of quotes illustrating Ferdinand de Saussure’s well‑known, lesser‑known and unknown views, all of which are of special importance and still provide intellectual stimulation for linguists today.

The article discusses the issue of perspective in linguistic historiography. The main question is that of how the historiographic perspective changes the description of a given historical epoch. This is demonstrated using three different descriptions of an important period in Czech linguistics, or more precisely, in Czech thought about language culture delimited by the works of Jan Gebauer, Josef Zubatý and Václav Ertl. Each of these descriptions is an example of one distinctive type of historiographic perspective and each is analyzed in a metahistoriographic manner in the second part of the article. The views of philosophers Stephen Toulmin and T. S. Kuhn are introduced and interpreted for these purposes.

The aim of this article is to contribute to the discussion on contemporary writing of the history of Czech linguistics. Specific features of the printed sources from the beginning of “linguistic research” (or rather, the reflection of language in the 16th and 17th centuries) on Czech are mentioned in part I; the heuristics (sources, archives) is still needed. Part II deals with one example of a grammar of Czech written by Joannes Drachovius SI (published in 1660). Part III emphasizes the research on the primary sources of older “linguistics”, the study of their cultural context, and cooperation with other disciplines.

The structured movement of meanings is a basic dimension of the history of linguistics. The perspective of personalities, schools and national traditions is more or less a kind of materialization in this context. This way of understanding historiography enables us to explicate overall directions of linguistics – the relationships of main- and side-streams of development, regressions, and periods of emancipation and interdisciplination. It enables us to identify not only cul-de-sac development, but also misunderstood and forgotten lines of development that would only appear to be promising in the future.

The present article reflects basic questions, problems and findings of the historiography of linguistics on the background of historiography of science. The first part deals with the reasons and motivations for such activity and presents some general information about the history, development and contemporary state of the historiography and metahistoriography of linguistics and their relevance. The second part articulates some methodological postulates for work in the field of linguistic historiography. The third part consists of an evaluation of Černý’s Dějiny lingvistiky and Kapitoly z dějin české jazykovědné bohemistiky by Pleskalová, Krčmová, Večerka & Karlík against the background of the previous parts. The critique of the books in question should open debate on the state of Czech linguistic historiography and its awareness of international research trends and findings.

In addition to the Jesuit grammars of Czech by J. Drachovius (Olomouc, 1660), J. Konstanc (Prague, 1667) and M. V. Šteyer (Prague, 1668), the anonymous concise grammar book Prima principia linguae Bohemicae (approx. 1678) was also published at the Jesuit printing office in Prague. On 48 pages, it contains the basic rules of Czech orthography and the nominal and verbal paradigms. The majority of the paradigms and the orthography rules correspond to those in the handbook by M. V. Šteyer, who probably is also the author of Prima principia. The book’s description of the main traits of what was at that time the higher standard bears witness to its stabilized form and continuity not only up until the end of the 18th century, which is reflected by its reprint in 1783, but also in the long term. If we compare the phonological formation and the paradigms of this higher variety of Middle Czech with the forms of the present-day standard, we do not find any essential differences.

The contribution is based on the authors’ experience gathered during the work on the history of Czech studies from the linguistic point of view that resulted in a book (Kapitoly z dějin české jazykovědné bohemistiky, 2007). The authors point out significant moments to be taken into consideration when the development of Czech studies from the linguistic point of view is considered (extralinguistic, theoretical, teleological circumstances) as well as their consequences. Their considerations lead to the conclusion that to know the history of linguistic thought is important not only in order to understand its development as such, but, based on the connections revealed, also in order to better understand the present-day orientation of Czech studies in the Czech context.

The article analyses the influence of Vladimír Šmilauer on the character of the Journal of Modern Philology (Časopis pro moderní filologii, ČMF). Šmilauer was associated with the Journal for Modern Philology as an author and an editor for Slavic studies (1939–1951). The article describes the main linguistic/philological topics contributed to the magazine by Šmilauer (Slovak studies and the history of the Slovak language, new Czech, e.g. orthography, reports on foreign literature, etc.). The period of Šmilauer’s work at the ČMF falls into a time of socially problematical political systems: the Nazi protectorate after 1939 and the communist terror after 1948. On the example of the case of Šmilauer, we will show how and when political systems were directly reflected in the philological content of the Journal for Modern Philology.

The core of this article is a substantial part of an interview conducted by J. Nekvapil with F. Daneš on September 21, 1988. The aim of the interview was to gain information for a profile of Daneš on the occasion of his 70th birthday, which was later published in Philologica Pragensia (Nekvapil 1989). Unlike other published interviews given by Daneš in later years, this one is characterized by a relatively high degree of spontaneity, thus presenting a less stylized view of the development of Czech linguistics and the Prague School, as well as of the life of Daneš himself. Prior to the interview transcript, several essential factors which constitute the interview are fiven: the participants, goal, surroundings, key, communicative medium and sequential progression. Attention is also devoted to the way in which the interview is presented in this article, including the genre-related pressures on its presentation. The epilogue adds intormation about the activities of F. Daneš after the interview, i.e. after 1988, and some intertextual and interdiscursive connections. The publication of this text stands to commemorate this significant linguist, who died on March 18, 2015.

Jádrem tohoto článku je podstatná část rozhovoru, který vedl J. Nekvapil s F. Danešem 21. 9. 1988. Účelem rozhovoru bylo získat informace pro napsání medailonku o F. Danešovi u příležitosti jeho sedmdesátin. Tento medailonek byl pak publikován v časopise Philologica Pragensia (Nekvapil, 1989). Na rozdíl od jiných publikovaných rozhovorů, které poskytl F. Daneš později, se tento rozhovor vyznačuje relativně vysokou mírou spontánnosti, a představuje tedy méně stylizovaný pohled na vývoj české lingvistiky, Pražské školy i na život samotného F. Daneše, včetně jeho života každodenního. Před uvedením přepisu rozhovoru jsou v tomto článku stručně popsány některé základní faktory, které tento rozhovor konstituují: účastníci, účel, prostředí, tón, komunikační prostředky a sekvenční průběh. Pozornost je věnována i tomu, jak je rozhovor v tomto článku prezentován, a zmíněny jsou žánrové tlaky na jeho prezentaci. V epilogu jsou uvedeny životní aktivity F. Daneše, které následovaly po čase rozhovoru, tedy po r. 1988, a některé aspekty intertextové a interdiskurzní. Článek vychází jako připomenutí života a díla velkého českého lingvisty, který zemřel dne 18. 3. 2015.

The article addresses the most general questions of contemporary linguistic historiography, with special interest devoted to pre-19th century development and the historiography of Czech linguistics. Starting with some preliminary comments on the basic terminology, it successively deals with the problems of the incorporation of Czech historiographic work into the European context, recent methodological debates, the relationships of the historiography of linguistics to other scientific disciplines, the motivation and goals of such research and the necessary intellectual equipment for a historiographer. Finally, it discusses the most urgent tasks of Czech linguistic historiography.
