The article presented the way of working of light on Baroque paintings. At the beginning it characterized the epoch itself, then it discussed the common meaning of light, the way of understanding it by medieval philosophers, afterwards by Leonardo da Vinci and Gian Paolo Lomazzo. Next it handled a subject of meaning of light for painting, including two types of it: lume particolare with origins of nature and made by human hand, and lume divino proceeded from Divine Person or supernatural event. Article also mentioned the meaning of darkness and shadows in the painting. As a example to analysis were taken paintings as follow: Rembrandt Lapidation of Saint Stephen, Murillo Saint Francis of Assisi in Prayer, Honthorst Christ before the high priest, Rembrandt Christ in Emmaus, Honthorst Adoration of the Shepherds, Rembrandt Angel Leaving the Family of Tobias and Murillo, The Conversion of Saint Paul.
