Główny cel niniejszego artykułu stanowi przedstawienie funkcji sztuki w eseju Ortegi – Dehumanizacja sztuki (1925). Teoria sztuki hiszpańskiego filozofa jest bardzo ściśle związana z jego filozofią społeczną. Punktem wyjścia dla prezentowanego tematu jest odpowiedź na pytanie o rolę sztuki w procesie kształtowania różnic społecznych. W swojej analizie autor pokazuje, iż w rzeczywistości sztuka w teorii Ortegi pełni funkcję swoiście rozumianego ocalenia – ochrony przed umasowieniem. Autor uzasadnia tezę, że zdehumanizowana sztuka charakteryzuje się swego rodzaju ambiwalentnością: jest niezrozumiała i jednocześnie, poprzez to niezrozumienie, otwiera nowe horyzonty w rozumieniu człowieka i społeczeństwa.

The main purpose of this paper is to present a function of the art in Ortega’s work – The dehumanization of art (1925). The art theory of the Spanish thinker is very closely connected to the social philosophy, as a starting point in the search for an answer to the question: what is the role of art in shaping social diff erences? In his analysis, the author shows that, in fact, the arts is a kind of salvation – it’s a protection against the masses. The author justifies the thesis that dehumanised art is ambivalent: it is incomprehensible and, at the same time, opens up new horizons to the look at the man and society.
