Baby Jesus’ standing, theft and search is a religious feast that is mainly celebrated within the Andean region of Venezuela, and as time has passed by, it has become part of the national cultural heritage. From our perspective of participant observers of the cultural object, this is an attempt to describe the celebration and to offer a possible hypothesis about the meanings related to the child’s search. Considering the generalized significance of this festivity, it would emphasize the fact that this tradition ratifies and evokes the recreation of several biblical episodes and the constant incorporation of Baby Jesus in the family as well as in the community which turns out to be an exaltation of religious, affective, cultural, and social values.

The aim of the paper is to analyse the transformations of the forms of late medieval folk piety in Germany and Netherlands. Two types of late medieval religious expression were distinguished: the so called extraverted piety, being a ritualised form faith, and the devotio moderna movement as instantiated by the mysticism of Meister Eckhart. By using the passages from The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis, De theologia mistica by Jacobus de Paradiso and Theologia Germanica both types of piety were presented as preparing the ground for the Reformation.

The article is concerned with the Infant Jesus cult in the life and work of Anica Bošković (1714––1804), one of a few Croat women authoresses of Dubrovnik in the century of Enlightenment. The Infant Jesus cult was linked in the past in Croatia with Franciscan communities, in older Polish culture, too. The family Bošković had a little figure of Infant Jesus named Bambin, beloved by all the people and famous by miracles. Anica Bošković wrote about Him many time: her deeply implanted devotion reflects in letters to her brother Ruđer, in her last will and in her poetic works, especially in Razgovor pastirski vrhu porođenja Gospodinova. Anica Bošković has conceived a preface to this work – letter dedicated to her brothers Ruđer and Baro, in which speaks about her inspirations and dreams. This work is a concept of construction of inner world of every woman who wants to love God more then other people. Poetic world of Anica Bošković reflects her faith, fantasy and it is built on hard religions and moral foundation.

A contribution to the consideration of the use of wigs in medieval sculpture in Silesia. The aim of the articles to present the issue of the use of natural hair (usually horsehair) in gothic Silesian sculpture and to highlight important problems and topics that should be taken up for better recognition of this issue. The wigs in medieval sculpture – most often appearing in Christ’s representations – were intended to strengthen realism, and thus to make the faithful deepen their contemplation and focus on the Passion of the Christ. Their use was a response to the then emotional piety and also to the needs of the faithful. Among the objects preserved in Silesia, a group with wigs or originally equipped with them can be indicated, which confirms this trend also in this region.

St. Arnold Janssen (1837-1909) is considered a pioneer of the modern missionary movement in the German, Dutch and Slavic-speaking countries in the 19th century. He was the Founder of the three religious-missionary congregations in Steyl – male congregation Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in 1875, active female congregation Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS) in 1889 and contemplative female congregation Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration (SSpSAP) in 1896. The spiritual and missionary direction of his life is based on the mystery of the Holy Trinity. This article describes how he lived his relationship with the Holy Trinity in prayer connected to mission and enlightened in mission. Three fundamental points are then presented: the spiritual life of Saint Arnold, the Trinitarian devotion that penetrated the whole of his life, and his tireless Trinitarian apostolate.

The article focuses on the cult of women saints in the spiritual life of the Blessed Dorothy of Montau. The material under discussion is the earliest biographical sources of the Blessed, especially "Liber de festis" and "Vita" by Dorothy’s confessor, John of Marienwerder. Dorothy venerated holy virgin martyrs, (e.g. her patron saint, St. Dorothy), saints worshipped by the Teutonic Order (St. Elizabeth of Hungary) and other holy women, e.g. belonging to the laity like the Montau recluse herself (St. Brigdet of Sweden, St. Mary Magdalene). The forms of the cult mentioned in the sources analysed vary from prayers and meditations to the imitationof the saints and some aspects of their lives.

God loves us and he wants us to recognize that his mercy is greater than our sin. Pope Francis has published a bull Misericordiae vultus, in which he has proclaimed the extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. The Holy Year of Mercy was inaugurated on December 8th 2015 and was concluded on November 20th 2016. The Holy Father teaches: We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy [...]. Our salvation depends on it. In this bull Pope has mentioned a great apostle of mercy, Saint Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun, who had mystical visions. Christ told her to spread the cult of mercy. In her Diary we find the following elements of the devotion to the Divine Mercy: image of merciful Christ, the Feast of Mercy, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Mercy hour and spreading the devotion to the Divine Mercy. These elements are analyzed in the present article.

[...] Nasze zba-wienie zależy od niego. W swojej bulli Papież wspomniał o wielkiej apostołce miłosierdzia, Fau-stynie Kowalskiej, polskiej zakonnicy, która miała mistyczne wizje. Chrystus powiedział jej, aby szerzyć kult miłosierdzia. W jej Dzienniczku znajdujemy następujące elementy nabożeństwa do Miłosierdzia Bożego: obraz miłosiernego Chrystusa, święto Miłosierdzia Bożego, Koronka do Miłosierdzia Bożego, godzina Miłosierdzia i szerzenie nabożeństwa do Miłosierdzia Bożego.

W „Duchowym kapłaństwie” z 1677 r. zachęcał kobiety do czytania i interpretowania Biblii.

The writings of Filip Jakob Spener about women of pietism had a contradictory message for them: on the one hand, the pianist called for reform, proclaimed the priesthood of all believers and encouraged women to be smiths of their own spiritual development; on the other hand, the thinking of pietist leaders differed little from traditional views on women and their submission to men. Sam Philipp Jakob Spener hesitated what roles and commitment are open to women. In the "spiritual priesthood" of 1677, he encouraged women to read and interpret the Bible. They had full right to discuss the Scriptures and instruct fellow believers. He even noticed that in some homes there were women who God blessed with understanding and who talk to families at a meeting in the home church. Philipp Jakob Spener had deep reservations about female prophets since their first appearance in the early 1690 more than A. H. Francke. Spener was essentially open to the possibility of ecstatic experiences and direct revelations from God, but soon began to analyze them, because the Bible warns of false prophets who will appear in the last days. Influenced by Spener, Francke finally rejected the authority of women's ecstatic experiences and the message they contained.

Based on a detailed excerption of manuscript and printed sources, we map the strategies of spreading and worshiping the cult of the Jesuit patron St. Francis Xavier in expressions of local piety. On the example of the Tertianship House in Telč, we observe the forms of reverence, how the cult of St. Francis Xavier was accented within the Order (Xavierian festivities – e.g. ceremonies connected with his feast or the anniversary of his canonization, and theatre plays), as well as how it was promoted outside the Order’s community (e.g. the establishment of the pilgrimage site in Knínice near Telč, Stations of the Cross, special devotions, pious peregrinations, granting indulgences). Using the ‘miraculous looks’ recorded in the Jesuit annual reports and in the history of the Jesuit Province, we present a reflection on St. Francis Xavier as a holy doctor and protector not only in the times of plague.

Artykuł ukazuje wzajemne odniesienia pomiędzy duchowością Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego a formami kultu.

The article describes the teaching of the Primate of the Millennium on Marian piety in the context of her role in a person's way to communion with God and men. The study is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the teaching of the Primate of the Millennium on the justification of Marian piety, the second part concerns the role of Marian piety in a person's way to communion with God, and the third part discusses the statements of Cardinal Wyszyński on the meaning of Marian piety in the realization of the commandment to love one's neighbor. The topic is presented through the analysis of over 3000 statements of the Servant of God which he addressed to the members of the lay Institute of the Helpers of Mary of Jasna Góra Mother of the Church. The study leads among others to the assertion that uniting one's life with Mary is conducive to personal sanctification and active love of neighbor and in this way contributes to the building of communion between people.

W artykule opisano nauczania Prymasa Tysiąclecia dotyczące pobożności maryjnej w kontekście roli Maryji w drodze człowieka do komunii z Bogiem i ludźmi. Artykół jest podzielony na trzy części. Pierwsza część dotyczy nauczaniu Prymasa Tysiąclecia w uzasadnieniu pobożności maryjnej, druga dotyczy roli pobożności maryjnej w drodze człowieka do komunii z Bogiem, a trzecia omawia wypowiedzi kardynała Wyszyńskiego na rozumieniu pobożności maryjnej w realizacji przykazania miłości bliźniego.

Czerpiąc inspirację z historii kultu Serca Jezusa, a zwłaszcza z prywatnych objawień Bożego Serca św. Małgorzacie Marii Alacoque, liczne episkopaty narodowe poświęcały Najświętszemu Sercu Pana Jezusa Kościoły lokalne i narody.

Taking the inspiration from the history of the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and especially from the private revelations of saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a number of national bishops conferences dedicated the local churches and whole nations to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On 11th June, 2021 the Polish bishops conference renewed such act in the difficult situation of the church and the nation, moreover even in the face of weakening devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Every act of dedication and entitlements is a religious act, which obliges to the fulfilment of the commitments that have been taken. In this context the question arises, and what next? In the form of suggestions few concrete steps have been proposed.

The article describes the figures of nuns in the prose of Eliza Orzeszkowa and Bolesław Prus, their way of perceiving the world and their role in it, as well as their understanding of God. Orzeszkowa and Prus create completely different images of representatives of the consecrated life. The vision of the strict God of sister Mechtylda is completely different from the image of the merciful Creator of mother Apolonia, whereas the nuns depicted by Prus are simply too busy to express their understanding of God. The accession of the heroines to the monastery is also motivated differently: some of them seek refuge from the here and now, others look for independence or want to help other people.

W świetle tych relacji negatywnie zostaje zweryfikowana hipoteza o jednej drodze maryjnej polskich świętych.

A study of Piotr Skarga’s and John Paul II’s biographies of Polish saints from between the 10th and the 16th c. reveals that the saints represent many models of Marian devotion: from calling upon the Virgin Mother to following her attitudes. Thus, no evidence has been found for promoting and highlighting a specific model of Marian devotion. Indeed, some biographies even fail to mention the subject. Therefore, the hypothesis of a single and uniform Marian way of Polish saints must be refuted. The study has also revealed an original model of Polishness in the period investigated. It had a universal dimension, approximating the idea of ”Church”. For example, St. Wojciech (Adalbert of Prague) is a patron saint of Poland and is regarded as a Polish saint

Artykuł prezentuje po raz pierwszy duchowość świątobliwej Eufemii (Ofki) z Raciborza, dominikańskiej mniszki z XIV w., w świetle kazań jej osobistego spowiednika – przeora klasztoru św. Jakuba w Raciborzu – Peregryna z Opola. Otrzymane wyniki analiz potwierdzają stawiane przez współczesnych historyków dotychczasowe hipotezy odnośnie do znajomości praktyk devotio moderna wśród polskich dominikanów i dominikanek. Negatywnie natomiast weryfikują słabo udokumentowane hipotezy odnośnie do domniemanego wpływu mistyki nadreńskiej na duchowość raciborskich mniszek.

This article stresses evidence of the devotion of the Venerable Euphemia of Raciborz, a Dominican nun who lived in the fourteenth century Silesian monastery. The results of the analysis are based on the seventeenth century work by Abraham Bzovius which were deemed insufficient, mainly because they did not take into account the collection of sermons de tempore et de sanctis written by Peregrine of Opole, a fourteenth century Polish Dominican, the Confessor of Euphemia and the other Dominican nuns from Raciborz. The information included in this paper seems to verify the existing arrangements. They confirm the image of spirituality of the Venerable Euphemia, based on piety, well-known in the Middle Ages, as devotio moderna, characterized by the veneration of the Passion of Christ, veneration of the Eucharist, devotion to the Holy Spirit and to Our Lady. Despite certain thematic analogies included in the sermons of Johannes Tauler and of Peregrine from Opole, the hypothesis developed by contemporary historians, about the influence of the Rhine school of mysticism on the spirituality of the Dominican nuns in Raciborz, must be rejected.

The jōgappas are male-born dedicated devotees of the South Indian goddess Reṇukā-Ellamma who adopt feminine characteristics. Due to their devotional practices and gender-specific expression, jōgappas are confronted with and affected by a range of notions on religious hierarchy and gender. They are opposed by cultural agendas in favour of a Sanskritic form of worship, are drawn into urban debates on sexual minorities and become increasingly interlinked with the hijra community. Furthermore, arguments regarding transgenderism in the context of the divine power and aspects of bhakti provide a rhetoric of deification which can be identified as specifically regional. Today, jōgappas face the challenges of negotiating their individual positions and identities within these global, national, urban, trans-regional and regional discourses.

Enchiridion indulgentiarum of Vatican treats, among others, of prayers of aspiration (aspirations), commonly called ejaculatory prayers (ejaculations), which are complements to individual indulgences. According to the document, an ejaculatory prayer is usually very short, expressed verbally or as a thought and as such externalizes a Christian’s internal attitude.Among pious invocations, it is possible to distinguish prayers which spontaneously flow from within a believer’s inside and those that have been confirmed by worshippers’ long practice or are customarily acknowledged. A collection of these prayer formulas as well as reflection on their content shows not only a believer’s individual piety but also portrays a praying person’s depth of consciousness of salvational occurrences. Thus, aspirations, whilst preserving their simplicity and expressiveness of significance, become a believer’s undisputed proof of faith and devotion.

Contribution by many religious priests (Benedictines, Cistercians, Dominicans, Franciscans and Jesuits) to the devotion of Sacred Heart has improved its theological roots. The article lists priests who conducted the study of Biblical and patristic sources of the cult of Sacred Heart. Their prayer, meditation and contemplation deepened the truth of the Gospel and Tradition. The worship of Sacred Heart is rooted in the Word of God and in it’s Patristic interpretation, but it’s theological development and the intervention of God through Marguerite Marie Alacoque brought to the approval of the cult by the Church.
