Synodality is one of the elements of the identity of ecclesial communities and thus of the whole Church. Pope Francis sees synodality as a challenge to the Church in the third Christian millennium. The culmination of his concern for the renewal of synodality in the Church is the convened XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, whose theme is: “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission”. The Synod was inaugurated in Rome on 9-10 October 2021. Synodality, however, is not a new phenomenon. From the very beginning of the Church, it has been essential for her life, for decision-taking and decision-making (Acts: 15). One of the basic forms of synods is diocesan synods. One of them is the Third Post-War Synod of the Archdiocese of Gniezno, which took place in the years 1995-2000. The aim of this study is to show the timeliness of the reflections of the Synod of Gniezno in relation to the problem of renewal of contemporary parishes. The article consists of three parts: (1) the presentation of the synod, (2) the synodal theology of the parish, (3) the model of parish renewal. The teaching of the Synod has been compared with the contemporary teaching of the Church. This comparison confirmed the thesis about the topicality of the reflections of the Gniezno Synod.

Canonical visitation of the parish as a form of implementation of the episcopal office is the momentous duty of every diocesan bishop. In the light of tradition reveals itself as one of the oldest institutions through which the shepherd of the diocese maintains direct contact with both clergy and laity. Because of the great pastoral significance of the visit as early as the fourth century synods ordered that the bishops during, taught and the Sacraments, a turning point in reviving this form of episcopal ministry had the Council of Trent whitch visits treated as an act preparatory to the diocesan synod. The Second Vatican Council referring to the biblical tradition and described the office of bishop as a “pastoral” and episcopal ministry as a “spiritual governance”. Noting that the territory of the diocese and its population should be such that the bishop, though he had to help others, he could personally act as bishop, created in this way, the fundamental conditions to give a canonical parish visitation clearly pastoral character. The last part of the article shows the extent to which the pastoral dimension of the mission of the diocesan bishop determines the practice of the canonical visitation of the Archdiocese of Warmia.

25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DIOCESAN MUSEUM IN OPOLE

EN
Across the ages the Church has been concerned with the cultural heritage of its members. The mid-eighteenth century witnessed discernible interest in religious objects excluded from the cult and emphasis was placed on the evangelization role of church museums, which, interested in the fate of useless artworks removed from church interiors, collected, stored, and conserved them as well as rendered them available to society. The anniversary of the Diocesan Museum in Opole be-came an excellent occasion for taking a closer look at its history and assess the part it played in the course of the past quarter of a century. The idea of establishing such a museum dates back to 1978 – the year when Alfons Nossol became the bishop of Opole. In 1984 the author of this article was appointed director and diocesan curator, and the museum was opened to the public on 21 November 1987. The unique design of the new building was realized thanks to the involvement of the local Catholic community. In this way, there emerged the first post-war Polish museum aimed at salvaging valuable monuments of sacral art in a diocese whose terrain contains a great number of such a monuments; in many cases, their roots go back to the onset of Christianity in Silesia. The cultural accomplishments of Opole Silesia were thus secured and presented to the wide public. The specificity of the collections and expositions distinguish this particular institution – some of the exhibits, e.g. liturgical vessels, are restored for some time to their original parishes during Church holidays, and then, upon their return to the Museum, continue to act as the testimony and object of faith. The Museum organizes concerts, theatre spectacles, and exhibitions of contemporary sacral art, which become occasions for meetings of artists, actors, journalists, historians of art and architects, and thus for creating a tradition linking the Church and those milieus. The gathered exhibits are evidence of the culture and faith of generations living in Opole Silesia and a source of pride for the inhabitants of Opole and the land of Opole, a region with rich Christian culture, where from the Middle Ages assorted artistic trends crossed. Upon the occasion of the anniversary of the Diocesan Museum a pontifical Holy Mass was celebrated in the nearby cathedral, an exhibition of graphic works: “From the heritage of faith – historical religious graphic art” was inaugurated, and the evening was enhanced by a concert: “Total pulchra est Maria”,dedicated to the Mother of God, featured in the Museum logo. A session of the Council for Culture and Protection of the Cultural Heritage at the Polish Episcopate discussed phenomena connected with Church museums in Poland.

The above text continues the issues contained in the article which appeared in the previous (94) volume of this academic journal. It concerns the process of marking the boundaries of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin, which originated the diocese of Lublin in 1805. The leitmotif of this article is historical and geographical analysis of the territorial formation of the diocese of Lublin from the moment of issuing the foundation bull to the year when all the directives from the bull were implemented, and the structure of deaneries and parishes for the new diocese was completely established. The article focuses on the boundary delimitation of the diocese of Lublin and shows the problems connected with the organization of its territorial structures, and above all problems arising from the modification in the existing structure of deaneries and parishes. Cartographic presentation of the parts of diocese of Lublin and its territorial organization enables to make comparative analysis of the contents of the foundation bull for the diocese of Lublin and its later deanery and parish structure, which was legitimized after 1807. The boundary instability of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin, which was the result of the changes in the delimitation due to the partition of Poland beginning at the end of the 18th century, is the reason why this article is accompanied by a few maps, the aim of which is to illustrate each and every modification to the boundaries of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin and to show its parts along with the marked capitals of the deaneries.

The following article focuses on the territorial analysis of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin from 1790 to the foundation of the diocese of Lublin by Pope Pius VII in the papal bull on 23 September 1805. The territorial structure of this diocese was formed from the two bigger and two smaller church administrative units, as in 1790 it encompassed some territory which belonged to the Metropolis of Lvov-the diocese of Chełm (three deaneries), as well as most of the Archdeanery of Lublin, which belonged to the diocese of Kraków, the Metropolis of Gniezno(apart from the deanery of Solec). From the latter diocese and metropolis, the deanery of Stężyca (from the deanery of Kielce) and the deanery of Urzędów (from the archdeanery of Zawichost) were also incorporated to the diocese of Chełm and Lublin. Presenting the particular parts of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin created in 1790, the author also describes the years before its foundation, because the analysis of the territorial structures both the diocese of Chełm- erected in 14 the century- and the archdeanery of Lublin-created in 12th century-covers even the beginnings of the 14th century. In addition, in this article an attempt has been made to explain the diocese name controversy –created in 1790- and the titles of its first ordinary bishops: Maciej Garnysz and Wojciech Skarszewski. The boundaries of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin underwent some changes over time due to the partitions of Poland. That is why the following article is accompanied by a few maps, which can help to illustrate each and every modification to the boundaries of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin and to show its parts along with the marked capitals of the deaneries.

The article focuses on the establishment, fonds and activity of the Diocesan Archive in Rzeszów. The Archive in Rzeszów plays an important role. Its purpose is to protect, collect, organise, permanently store the archival materials and make them available. The Diocese of Rzeszów was established by John Paul II in his bull Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus of 25 March 1992. The Diocesian Archive in Rzeszów is a separate scientifi c and cultural institution established by the Bishop of Rzeszów, Kazimierz Górny. It is located at the seat of Diocesian Curia in Rzeszów at Castle Street 4. In the years 1992-1999 the Rev. Dr Stanisław Nabywaniec was responsible for organizing the Archive. In 1999 this task was assigned to the Rev. dr Andrzej Motyka, who was also appointed the Diocesan Archive Director. Soon, the statute and the rules of the Archive were formulated, the structure was established and it became the basis for organising the archival materials. The materials have been available since 2003. The article presents the role of the historical archive in the diocese, the origins of the Diocese of Rzeszów, the aims and tasks of the Diocesan Archive in Rzeszów. Then, it focuses on the statute, the rules and organization of the Archive. A significant element of the article is the collection of the Diocesan Archive in Rzeszów (the collection structure) which contains 35 fonds. The final part shows the details about church archives, where we can fi nd archival materials relating to the current area of the Diocese of Rzeszów, which was formed from parts of the Diocese of Przemyśl and Tarnów. Previously, this area was the part of the Metropolis of Lvov and Krakow. The paper also provides the list of archives helpful to the researchers of history of the mentioned area: the Archive of the Metropolitan Curia in Krakow, the Archive of the Cathedral Chapter of Krakow, Archbishop Eugeniusz Baziak Archive, the Archdiocesan Archive of Latin Rite in Przemyśl, the Archive of the Cathedral Chapter of Przemyśl, the Archive of Cathedral Chapter of Sandomierz and the Archive of the Diocese of Tarnów. The article contains the current contact details for these institutions, directors, opening hours, and the list of guides and articles about fonds. The paper is the first comprehensive study of the Diocesan Archive in Rzeszów as it has been not presented in the previous studies of the Archives of the Catholic Church in Poland.

JUBILEUSZ 25-LECIA MUZEUM DIECEZJALNEGO W OPOLU

75%
PL
W 1984 r. piszący te słowa został dyrektorem i kusto¬szem diecezjalnym, a muzeum otwarto 21.11.1987 r. Z okazji jubileuszu Muzeum Diecezjalnego w pobliskiej katedrze została odprawiona uroczysta, pontyfikalna msza święta, otwarto wystawa grafik pt. „Z dziedzictwa wiary – zabytkowa grafika religijna”, a wieczór uświetnił koncert „Tota pulchra est Maria” – dedykowany Bogurodzicy, obecnej w wizerunku stanowiącym logo muzeum. Odbyło się także posiedzenie Rady ds. Kultury i Dziedzictwa Kulturowego przy EP, poświęcone problemom związanym z muzealnictwem kościelnym w Polsce.
