The START Series is created by Kamila Dembińska and Agnieszka Małyska for beginners starting to learn Polish. The paper analyzes one of the lessons from the textbook START 1 (shopping) and the way it introduces grammar at the very basic level.

This article discusses the various problems one faces as a teacher of Latin in Poland. These problems are partly due to the permanently decreasing number of Latin lessons in schools. This decrease, however, has not been considered by those responsible for the core curriculum, which is now too extensive and does not match the amount of time provided for Latin classes. The lack of reform in the didactics of Latin also takes its toll (namely the continuous usage of the grammar-translation method). Direct methods, which include dr. Rouse’s method, Ørberg’s method and Assimil method (all discussed briefly in this article) could prove to be a useful solution to these problems.

W latach 2014 i 2015 w londyńskiej szkole jpjo Polword zostały przeprowadzone dwa pilotażowe kursy języka polskiego „Pollan” – eksperymentalnej metody nauczania języka polskiego jako obcego. Bazuje ona na pryncypiach popularnej Metody Callana, z powodzeniem stosowanej w nauczaniu języka angielskiego jako obcego od lat 60. ubiegłego stulecia. Polega ona generalnie na ćwiczeniu umiejętności szybkiego rozumienia pytania i automatyzacji wypowiedzi. „Pollan” jest pierwszą próbą przetransponowania metody na język obcy. Wybór metody został podyktowany obiecującymi wynikami z punktu widzenia szybkości uczenia się języka.

In 2014 and 2015 two experimental courses of Polish as a foreign language were run at Polword – a school of Polish as a foreign language. Pollan is based on the principles of the Callan Method, which has been used successfully in teaching English as a foreign language for many years. It is based on the assumption that students can quickly acquire the basic knowledge and develop fluency using the method of mechanical repetition. Pollan was the first attempt of transposition of the method into any foreign language.
