In the article, I discuss the names of disco polo bands (disco polo is a kind of Polish pop music) and songs. I analyse the names from the linguistic and cultural perspective. I also highlight the external contexts. I also treat the onomastic layer of disco polo as a sign of cognitive conceptualisations, being the basis of the creation of images of the world in the lyrics.

Zenon Martyniuk – founder and main singer of a disco polo band Akcent has been triumphant in the Polish music scene for many years, and his infectious songs are steadily taking down barriers and becoming more widespread in various Polish institutions of culture. This article attempts to analyse the memetic phenomenon of Zenek, which originates in its easily accessible melody and simple lyrical layer with clear references to folklore. Are we experiencing the emergence of a new 'musical meme', which makes listening to disco polo no longer embarassing and trashy?

The article discusses dislike for the music genre called disco polo. This reluctance is evident in the views of many members of the intellectual elite of the Polish society who consider this music kitsch. The attitude towards this music, listened to mainly by the inhabitants of villages and small towns, is an indicator of cultural taste, and thus a sign of class affiliation. If you want to be better, humiliate disco polo listeners. The article shows that disco polo listeners turned out to be a strong anti-hegemonic resource that has not been adapted to the tastes of the upper class. Therefore, it should be degraded, because it presents a new kind of power i.e. esthetic.

W artykule poddaję refleksji niechęć do gatunku muzyki disco polo.

This article attempts a sociological analysis of a specific musical trend – disco polo – through the prism of the figuration theory proposed by Norbert Elias. Street music of the 1990s was an extremely accurate musical illustration of the period of systemic transformations in Poland, because disco polo’s characteristic elements (e.g., kitsch, impermanence, and banality, as well as optimism, a sense of community, and freshness) were combined with social feelings and attitudes toward the rapidly changing reality. Disco polo documented the social life of the time, as is visible in its symbolic layer as well as in its purely musical arrangement: it was the hallmark of a generation.
