The Slavic harvest custom of leaving a heap of unreaped crops in the field (in Poland called przepiórka, broda, pępek, koza, and so on) is based on the opposition old/young, which functions as an active factor that shapes the entire realm of depictions. The authors discuss especially the role of the theme of youth (Pol. pępek) and its geographical range.

The article presents the history of the harvest festival (called “dożynki”) in Poland from the Stalinist times until the 1980s. It shows its organization and course in particular periods, however, it puts the greatest emphasis on the ideological significance of this holiday of the Polish village “stolen” by the communists. It also shows resistance on the part of the Catholic Church and the rural community towards the appropriation of centuries-old tradition by the authorities. The text is based on archival research conducted in Warsaw, Kraków and Gdańsk.

Artykuł przedstawia historię dożynek w Polsce od czasów stalinowskich do lat 80. XX wieku. Pokazuje ich organizację i przebieg w poszczególnych okresach, jednak największy nacisk kładzie na ideologiczne znaczenie tego święta polskiej wsi „skradzionego” przez komunistów. Świadczy też o oporze Kościoła katolickiego i społeczności wiejskiej wobec zawłaszczenia przez władze wielowiekowej tradycji. Tekst powstał na podstawie badań archiwalnych przeprowadzonych w Warszawie, Krakowie i Gdańsku.
