This paper outlines the Polish reception of achievements of the French school of genetic criticism. It highlights the applicability of this methodology in research on the archives of artists, in particular autobiographical writings that shed light on the creative process. The second part of the paper presents approaches currently emerging in France, where the method of genetic criticism in research on artistic archives is becoming more prominent.

W niniejszym artykule została szkicowo przedstawiona polska recepcja dokonań francuskiej szkoły krytyki genetycznej. Zwrócono uwagę na przydatność tej metodologii w badaniach nad archiwami artystów, w tym nad rzucającym światło na proces twórczy piśmiennictwem autobiograficznym. W kolejnej części artykułu zreferowano rozwijające się aktualnie we Francji podejścia wykorzystujące metody krytyki genetycznej w badaniach nad archiwami tworzenia.

Artykuł zawiera omówienie i edycję XIX-wiecznego autobiograficznego utworu w formie dialogu zatytułowanego „Przyczyny melancholii. (Rozmowa)”, którego autorką jest Barbara Iłłakowicz (1856–1893). Ten odnaleziony w archiwum prywatnym tekst jest istotny nie tylko jako dokument swoich czasów oraz z uwagi na wzbogacenie wiedzy o relacjach rodzinnych znanej poetki Kazimiery Iłłakowiczówny, której matką była autorka. Stanowi on przede wszystkim interesujący dokument herstory XIX-wiecznej Polski i Litwy: świadectwo dylematów osobistych i zawodowych kobiety wywodzącej się ze środowiska szlachecko-ziemiańskiego i utrzymującej się z własnej pracy. Mimo zależności emocjonalnej i, częściowo, ekonomicznej od mężczyzny Barbara Iłłakowicz nie rezygnuje z autonomii i podmiotowości. Tekst w otwarty sposób podejmuje m.in. problem aborcji i prawa kobiety do decydowania o sobie.

The article contains a presentation and an edition of a 19th c. autobiographical piece in a dialogue form entitled “Przyczyny melancholii. (Rozmowa)” (“Reasons of Melancholy. ”) by Barbara Iłłakowicz (1856–1893). The piece, found in a private archive, is crucial not only as a document of its time and as a source that enriches the state of art about family relations of the poetess Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna, the author’s daughter. It is first and foremost an interesting herstory document of the 19thc. Poland and Lithuania: a testimony of personal and professional dilemmas of a woman of noble-yeoman origin and earning her living by her own work. Regardless of emotional and partially financial dependency on a male, Barbara Iłłakowicz does not resign from subjective autonomy and agency. The text openly touches such issues as, e.g., abortion and a woman’s right to decide about herself.

The scientifi c report describes the literary and cultural studies discussed at the conferences organized by the Ukrainian Studies Department at the University of Warsaw in 2018 and 2019. There are three themes distinguished here: research relating to the sacred, childhood and autobiography. The lectures cover the history of literature since the times of Kievan Rus’ through the 19th and 20th century up until the present day, as well as the issue of theories and connections between literary and cultural studies. The cultural studies lectures exhibit a great variety of topics stemming from the Ukrainian art in the 20th and 21st century as well as theatre, music, fi lm, etc.

A translated chapter of Carolyn Steedman’s book Master and Servant. Love and Labour in the English Industrial Age. This text reconstructs the experience of a 18th-century servant, Phoebe Beatson, on the basis of a diary of John Murgatroyd, her employer. Confronting this testimony with other documents of social life, Steedman constructs a history of a class overlooked by traditional Marxist historiography – female domestic servants.

Tekst jest wstępnym rozdziałem z książki Carolyn Steedman „Służąca i jej pan. Miłość i praca w Anglii wieku industrialnego” (Master and Servant. Love and Labour in the English Industrial Age). Tytułowa służąca to Phoebe Beatson, której losy Steedman rekonstruuje na podstawie dziennika jej pracodawcy – pastora Johna Murgatroyda. Zestawiając to świadectwo z innymi dokumentami życia społecznego epoki, Steedman pisze historię klasy pominiętą w tradycyjnych marksistowskich historiografiach – historię kobiecej służby domowej.
